He believed in the power of education, talent, and mentorship, and demonstrated what doors each of these could open. Wade was a mentor, teacher, and principal in the public, adult, and university school systems for more than 25 years. Rather than adopt conventional teaching methods, he used hip-hop culture and Afrocentrism as positive learning tools. Wade s talent was also as a basketball coach and player for the St. Francis Xavier University, Canada s Junior National Team, and Canada Games. He believed in the each one teach one philosophy and in giving back to his community in order to make a difference. Our cover artwork has been reproduced with permission from the artist, Robert Small. Many thanks to Mr. Small for sharing this with us.

Psalm 37: 1-12, 41&42 Noli aemulari. Chant by H. J Gauntlett (sung by the choir) 1 Fret not thyself because of the ungodly; / neither be thou envious against the evil doers. 2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, / and be withered even as the green herb. 3 Put thou thy trust in the Lord, and be doing good; / dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. 4 Delight thou in the Lord, / and he shall give thee thy heart's desire. 5 Commit thy way unto the Lord, and put thy trust in him, / and he shall bring it to pass. 6 He shall make thy righteousness as clear as the light, / and thy just dealing as the noon-day. 7 Rest in the Lord, and abide patiently upon him: / but grieve not thyself at him whose way doth prosper, against the man that doeth after evil counsels. 8 Leave off from wrath, and let go displeasure: / fret not thyself, else shalt thou be moved to do evil. 9 For wicked doers shall be rooted out; / but they that patiently abide the Lord, those shall inherit the land. 10 Yet a little while, and the ungodly shall be clean gone: / thou shalt look upon his place, and he shall be away. 11 But the meek-spirited shall possess the land, / and shall be refreshed in the multitude of peace. 40 But the salvation of the righteous cometh of the Lord; / who is also their refuge in the time of trouble. 41 And the Lord shall stand by them and save them: / he shall deliver them from the ungodly, and shall save them, because they put their trust in him. READINGS TODAY COLLECT Almighty God, your Son revealed in signs and miracles the wonder of your saving love. Renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weakness sustain us by your mighty power; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS Merciful God, accept all we offer you this day. Lead us to love you with all our heart, and to love all people with your perfect love. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Gracious God, in the eucharist we celebrate your love for us and for all people. Grant that strengthened by these holy gifts, we may show your love in our lives, and know its fulfilment in your presence. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF GENESIS Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?" But his brothers could not answer him, so dismayed were they at his presence. Then Joseph said to his brothers, "Come closer to me." And they came closer. He said, "I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. And now do not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. For the famine has been in the land these two years; and there are five more years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. So it was not you who sent me here, but God; he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt. Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, 'Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not delay. You shall settle in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children's children, as well as your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. I will provide for you there - since there are five more years of famine to come - so that you and your household, and all that you have, will not come to poverty.'" And he kissed all his brothers and wept FEBRUARY 24,

upon them; and after that his brothers talked with him. GENESIS 45:3-11, 15 A READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS But someone will ask, "How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?" Fool! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. And as for what you sow, you do not sow the body that is to be, but a bare seed, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body. So it is with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable, what is raised is imperishable. It is sown in dishonour, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual body. Thus it is written, "The first man, Adam, became a living being"; the last Adam became a lifegiving spirit. But it is not the spiritual that is first, but the physical, and then the spiritual. The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven. As was the man of dust, so are those who are of the dust; and as is the man of heaven, so are those who are of heaven. Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we will also bear the image of the man of heaven. What I am saying, brothers and sisters, is this: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 1 CORINTHIANS 15:35-38, THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE Jesus said, "But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back." LUKE 6:27-38 FEBRUARY 24,

PSALM 37:1-12, CHANT 2 Do not fret yourself because of / evildoers;* do not be jealous of those / who do wrong. For they shall soon wither / like the grass,* and like the green grass / fade away. Put your trust in the Lord / and do good;* dwell in the land and feed / on its riches. Take delight / in the Lord,* and he shall give you your / heart s desire. Commit your way to the Lord and put your / trust in him,* and he will bring / it to pass. He will make your righteousness as clear / as the light* and your just dealing / as the noonday. Be still be-/fore the Lord* and wait patient-/ly for him. Do not fret yourself over the / one who prospers,* the one who succeeds in / evil schemes. Refrain from anger, leave / rage alone;* do not fret yourself; it leads on-/ly to evil. For evildoers shall / be cut off,* but those who wait upon the Lord shall pos-/sess the land. In a little while the wicked shall / be no more;* you shall search out their place, but they will / not be there. But the lowly shall pos-/sess the land;* they will delight in abund-/dance of peace. FEBRUARY 24,

But the deliverance of the righteous comes / from the Lord;* he is their stronghold in / time of trouble. The Lord will help them and / rescue them;* he will rescue them from the wicked and deliver them, because they seek re-/fuge in him. Please consider bringing an item to the Nursery on Sundays in support of this program. Thank you! African Heritage Month Legacies and institutions Midwives of the African Nova Scotian Communities People of African descent have been in Nova Scotia since the early 1600's. Larger migrations came during the late 1700's to the early 1900's. Through the early days of struggle, they had to be self-reliant. By helping to bring new generations of babies into the world, the Midwives were an essential part of the African-Nova Scotian existence. Midwives left their home at any hour of the night under many conditions to aid in the safe arrival of sometimes hundreds of babies in their lifetime. Arriving with satchel in hand; their tools were clean cloths, scissors, and usually something to assist in making a meal. These ladies came not only to help with labour, they also came to help to keep the family home and to stay until the Mothers were back on their feet. Their experience, courage, and ultimately their faith guided them through regular deliveries and challenging birth situations. Their goal was to ensure babies took their first breath, and to not give up; even when the Doctor present had given up on a baby. Midwives went where they were needed; which sometimes took them into the surrounding white communities to assist with deliveries when the Doctor could FEBRUARY 24,

not make it. Within the Black Communities of Nova Scotia, Midwives delivered generations of babies well into the 1960 s. Ladies Auxiliary of the African United Baptist Association of Nova Scotia Between 1824 and 1891, a network of African Baptist churches were organized in Black communities throughout Nova Scotia. In 1854, these churches were regrouped into the African United Baptist Association (AUBA). Black women were key members, organizers and teachers within the AUBA. The Ladies Organization (Auxiliary) was born in 1917 during the AUBA s Annual Session in East Preston, Nova Scotia, 12 years before women were declared persons under Canadian law. The first President was Sister Maude Sparks from Cherry Brook. legacies-institutions.html Flower Sponsors Flowers can be co-sponsored by two separate persons/ families, on a given Sunday.
