READINGS THIS WEEK COLLECT Almighty God, who sent your servant John the Baptist to prepare your people to welcome the Messiah, inspire us, the ministers and stewards of your truth, to turn our disobedient hearts to you, that when the Christ shall come again to be our judge, we may stand with confidence before his glory; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS God our strength, we are nothing without you. Receive all we offer you this day as you sustain us with your mercy; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Faithful God, we thank you for feeding us with this heavenly banquet. Help us always to hear the prophet's call to turn our hearts to you; in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF BARUCH Take off the garment of your sorrow and affliction, O Jerusalem, and put on forever the beauty of the glory DECEMBER 9,

8 from God. Put on the robe of the righteousness that comes from God; put on your head the diadem of the glory of the Everlasting; for God will show your splendour everywhere under heaven. For God will give you evermore the name, Righteous Peace, Godly Glory." Arise, O Jerusalem, stand upon the height; look toward the east, and see your children gathered from west and east at the word of the Holy One, rejoicing that God has remembered them. For they went out from you on foot, led away by their enemies; but God will bring them back to you, carried in glory, as on a royal throne. For God has ordered that every high mountain and the everlasting hills be made low and the valleys filled up, to make level ground, so that Israel may walk safely in the glory of God. The woods and every fragrant tree have shaded Israel at God's command. For God will lead Israel with joy, in the light of his glory, with the mercy and righteousness that come from him. BARUCH 5:1-9 A READING FROM THE LE TTER OF PAUL TO THE PHILIPPIANS I thank my God every time I remember you, -constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, -because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. - I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it t o completion by the day of Jesus Christ. -It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God's grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel. -For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight -to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blame less, -having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. PHILIPPIANS 1:3-11 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, -as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be DECEMBER 9,

9 made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; -and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'" LUKE 3:1-6 Canticle: The Song of Zechariah Chant No. 9 Blessed be the Lord, the / God of Israel; for he has come to his people and / set them free. He has raised up for us a / mighty Saviour, born of the house of his / servant David. Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us / from our enemies, from the hands of / all who hate us. He promised to show mercy / to our fathers and to remember his / holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our / father Abraham, to set us free from the hands / of our enemies, free to worship him / without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days / of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of / the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to pre-/pare his way, to give his people knowledge / of salvation by the forgiveness / of their sins. In the tender compassion / of our God the dawn from on high shall / break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the / shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the / way of peace. PWRDF to support Yemen emergency response with Foodgrains Bank The Primate s World Relief and Development Fund has today announced it is contributing $50,000 of its Canadian Foodgrains Bank equity to a food relief project to support vulnerable families in Yemen suffering from extreme hunger. The project is led by Cana- DECEMBER 9,

20 dian Foodgrains Bank member ADRA Canada, and supported financially by the Government of Canada and fellow Foodgrains Bank members Development and Peace-Caritas Canada, Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, World Renew and The United Church of Canada. We are devastated at the news coming out of Yemen. The people of Yemen are enduring atrocities that no human being should have to live through, says Foodgrains Bank Executive Director Jim Cornelius. Supporting the people of Yemen is important at such a time when there is near-famine in the country. PWRDF is glad to support this important project and to do so with Foodgrains Bank and other colleague church development agencies, says Will Postma, Executive Director of PWRDF. Hunger, disease and bombs are devastating the lives of millions of people as the war in Yemen continues into its fourth year. About 8.4 million people in the country are at risk of starvation. Through the new project, 1,100 vulnerable families will receive vouchers that allow the families some sense of normalcy in how they select food for their families, and also supports local food vendors and their families. The vouchers are redeemable for salt, sugar, flour, oil and beans. The families live in the Harib Alqaramish district of Yemen. The area has experienced extremely intense conflict, including airstrikes and frequent bombardment. Many homes have been destroyed. Amani Ahmed Abu Hamas Mohammed Sena Khalfan Halima Suraia Abdullah Civilians are a frequent target in the wider conflict as well. Assaults on World Food Programme facilities in Yemen s ports are another example of how innocent people are being made to suffer. In early August, an air strike in Yemen hit a market, killing 40 people and injuring 60, with children on a bus among the casualties. Ordinary people in Yemen are also targeted by other means, including blocking of aid shipments, and refusals to allow imports of food. Providing emergency assistance within Yemen is difficult due to the ongoing conflict, and the refusal of combatants to allow for emergency assistance for civilians. DECEMBER 9,

22 The Second Sunday of Advent PEACE Reader: Our homes and our world are under siege with too much information - television and telemarketing; blogs and texting: so much information often bearing too little wisdom. Angry voices compelling hate. Quiet voices counseling complacency. Mechanical voices offering deals -- too much information! Too little wisdom! People: Confusion surrounds us; Truth gets lost. Reader: We call out in our confusion: People: Where is your Wisdom, O God? Where is the word that leads to life? Reader: We remind ourselves of our ancient story: John, Zachariah s son, out in the desert at the time, received a message from God. He went all through the country around the Jordan River preaching a baptism of life-change leading to forgiveness of sins, as described in the words of Isaiah the prophet: prepare God s arrival! Make God s road smooth and straight! (Luke 3: 2-4, paraphrase) Let us light this second candle of Advent, a candle of Peace. (second purple candle is lit) In its light, let us think, quietly and peacefully, about what voices of true life-change and forgiveness are speaking in our world right now. People: May this candle of Advent Peace shine in our hearts all week and remind us to enter times of quiet and peace in order to listen, through the noise of our lives, for the call to prepare for the Holy One. Amen. Song: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (Verses 1, 2) Hymn 89 DECEMBER 9,
