R PSALM 72:1-7, A READING FROM THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE EPHESIANS This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles - for surely you have already heard of the commission of God's grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it JANUARY 6,

8 has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God's grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. EPHESIANS 3:1-12 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: 'And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. '" Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage." When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his JANUARY 6,

9 mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. MATTHEW 2:1-12 This Morning s Music Todd Marchand earned Bachelor s and Master s degrees in music education from Texas Christian University, where he performed in the university bands, jazz ensemble and orchestra, and served as a teaching assistant. A marketing communications professional in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area, he is principal trombonist of the Northeast Orchestra. Marchand is an Episcopal deacon and attends the Church of the Holy Angels in Fort Worth. His setting of a collect from the BCP asks for God s guidance in all our endeavours a fitting sentiment for the season of Epiphany. Felix Mendelssohn wrote two oratorios which received great critical acclaim: Paulus, Op 36 (1836) and Elias, Op 70 (1846). Having searched for a suitable subject for a third oratorio he began work on Christus, Op 97. The supervision of a perform- ance of Elias required him to visit Berlin, but when he returned to Leipzig he began suffering from severe fits and died on 4 November The anthem, There Shall a Star, is the third section of Christos, the composer s unfinished third oratorio. The music of John Rutter borrows from the Anglican Church roots of his heritage, but also from late Romantic French sonorities and chord progressions; his texts tend either to adapt Biblical passages or texts from the Anglo-Catholic liturgical tradition. At times, however, he sets non-liturgical Christian texts as anthems none the less beautiful for celebration within these traditions. The poetic text of his A Gaelic Blessing concludes with Christ the light of the world. Rutter adapts a blessing from ancient Gaelic runic lore, a very rugged and corporeal blessing that asks for the descent of deep peace to those hearing. The poet used almost druidical metaphor to plumb the depths of the desired peace, a deep peace of the running wave and the flowing air, the quiet earth and shining stars of the gentle night ; it is the peace of the moon and stars and that of Christ the light of the world. All of these facets of deep peace are invoked to descend upon our congregation. JANUARY 6,

We are pleased to welcome Mel Earley as our guest presenter on the subject of Habitat for Humanity, an organization that Mel has been integrally involved with for years. Mel is a gifted presenter and the combination of his text and photos makes for an engaging session. Come and learn about Habitat for Humanity from someone who has led a number of building crews for this organization in various parts of the world. All are welcome to attend on January 16. Archbishop of Canterbury s final New Year s Message January 2, 2013 Whenever I make a broadcast like this one, I m acutely aware of the gap between what I m seeing here and what you re looking at, at home. You see me now sitting quietly in my study. What I m seeing is a small crowd of wonderfully expert and efficient technicians doing the filming, meticulously checking the pictures and the sound. What we see happening is only a small part of what s going on in order to make it happen. And this last year we had a chance to notice this, for once, in a very vivid way. The extraordinary events of the Olympics and Paralympics last summer provided an unforgettable spectacle. But everyone who visited the Olympic site or watched the broadcasts will have been made aware of the army of volunteers who cheerfully gave up their free time and worked away, without complaint, all hours of the day and night to make these great events happen. They were the key people who translated the Olympic vision into reality for the rest of us. BULLETIN NOTICES 14

15 It ought to make us think a bit harder about all the other folk who quietly, often invisibly, turn vision into reality and just make things happen especially volunteers. Here at the Robes project, over twenty local churches are combining to offer food and shelter to homeless people in London. Religion here isn t a social problem or an old-fashioned embarrassment, it s a wellspring of energy and a source of life-giving vision for how people should be regarded and treated. So let s recognize this steady current of generosity that underlies so much of our life together in this country and indeed worldwide. It s all based on one vision to make our society, our whole world, work for everyone, not just the comfortable and well off. And it s a vision that sometimes seems to need Olympic levels of patient hard work and dedication. If you have the good fortune to live in a community where things seem to be working well the chances are that if you slip backstage you ll find an army of cheerful people making the wheels go round and don t forget just what a huge percentage of them come from the churches and other faith groups. How very good that people like that are there for us, we can say but as soon as we ve said that, we should be prompted to ask the tougher question: what can I do to join this silent conspiracy of generous dedication? There ll be those who have time and skill and strength to offer; there ll be those who have less of these, but can support in prayer and goodwill. And as we think about this silent groundswell, perhaps our minds can begin to open up to the deepest secret of all the trust that the entire universe is held together by the quiet, unfailing generosity of God. What we see and grasp isn t the whole story but just occasionally we can get a glimpse. I hope there will be lots of joyful glimpses like that for you in the year ahead.
