gee? Who surprises with forgiveness, and love, and offers to make all things new? People: Our Hope is fragile as an infant. Reader: We call out in our longing: People: Where is your Power, O God? Where is the Love that transforms our world? Reader: We remind ourselves of Mary's ancient song: Sing out my soul, sing of the holiness of God: Who has delighted in a woman, lifted up the poor, satisfied the hungry, given voice to the silent, grounded the oppressor, blessed the full-bellied with emptiness, and with the gift of tears, those who have never wept; who has desired the darkness of the womb and inhabited our flesh. Sing of the longing of God, Sing out, my soul! (From Luke 1: 39-55, paraphrased by Janet Morley in All Desires Known 1994) Let us light this fourth candle of Advent, a candle of Love. In its light, let us think about our world, about those places where our God is longing to be born again, in peace, in hope, in joy and with love. People: May this candle of Advent Love shine in our hearts all week and remind us to be midwives to Christ's birth in our work for justice, our practice of peace, our offering of welcome and forgiveness. Amen. Hymn CP 89O Come, O Come, Emmanuel [verses. 1-3 & 7] Reader: Let us imagine that it is Christmas Eve! Mary and Joseph have finally found a quiet place to stop after their long journey; not in a house or an inn, but in a humble stable. The straw we placed in the cradle reminds us that we all have a part to play in creating a place in our lives and in our world where Jesus DECEMBER 20,

may be born. As we wait once again, to celebrate his birth at Christmas, let us take the time and effort to truly prepare a place where he will find rest and we will truly see and know the great gift of God in him. Opening Prayer: What a joy and privilege it is, O God, to be here today. We anticipate the birth of Jesus, our Saviour, into the world. Just as Mary and Joseph finished their long journey to Bethlehem, so we will soon to finish our Advent journey. Just as Mary and Joseph prepare for the birth about to happen, so now we prepare ourselves for the birth of joy and peace into our world. Loving God, open wide the crowded inns of our hearts. Reveal your light and let us see it together, in ourselves, in each other and in our world. Amen. Hymn CP 123 Once in Royal David s City [verses 1-2] Luke 2:1-7 The Birth of Jesus In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. DECEMBER 20,

Meditation: The Gift of Openness Probably a lot of us are hoping for a special gift this Christmas. We all know we might receive what we are hoping for, and we might not. That s part of the fun and magic of Christmas hoping for some things, and receiving other things we never even dreamed of. That first Christmas, the world was hoping for many things to happen, but never imagined God would come in the form of a tiny child! Today we're going to think about some of the gifts Jesus offers to bring to us. The first is the gift of Openess. The story we just heard explained that when Mary and Joseph finally arrived in Bethlehem, there was no room for them in the inn, and that was very sad. But one inn keeper found room in his heart to care about Mary and Joseph, and opened the doors of his stable where they could rest and keep warm. This key is a reminder and symbol of how important it is to have an open heart, a heart that has room to welcome others. There are lots of lonely, sad, homeless and hurting people who need us to find room in our hearts for them. Jesus came to show us that there would always be room for all of us in the heart of God. What a wonderful gift! So we will place this key at the manger to remind us of God s gift of Openness. Hymn CP 136 While Shepherd's Watched their Flocks [verses 1-4] Luke 2:8-16 Reader: In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, DECEMBER 20,

Gabriel: Do not be afraid; for see I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger. Reader: And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and praising. Gabriel: Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favours! Reader: When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Shepherd: Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us. Reader: So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. Meditation: The Gift of Bread We might imagine that shepherds, people who took care of sheep out in the fields, were really important people, but they weren't. In fact, they were considered to be among the most unimportant people of their day! Yet this really important news about Jesus being born came to them first. I think God is telling us something. God is telling us that everyone is important. Everyone has a right to good news. Right now, good news for most of the world s people would be to have enough bread to keep them and their families alive. Peace and good will among all people means enough bread for all people. The name Bethlehem the town where Jesus was born means the house of bread. Jesus came to bring peace to our world. DECEMBER 20,

Bread reminds us of Jesus who shared bread with crowds of people and with his disciples. He taught us to give thanks to God for our daily bread, and who promised to be with us when we break bread together in Communion. Let us place this bread as a gift at the manger to remind us of the "Gift of Bread" and our call to share this gift with others. Hymn CP 120 O Little Town of Bethlehem [verses 1-4] Luke The Shepherds Go Tell the Story When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. Meditation: The Gift of Vision When the shepherds left Bethlehem and returned to their sheep, they went back to the same world. They were still shepherds, still had the same jobs to do, and still were considered unimportant by most people, yet the story says that they left singing praises for all they had seen and heard. What they saw and heard gave them hope and a new way to look at, and listen to, their world. It can be that way for us too! We can see the world in a new way - one filled with hope - because of this special birth. Life in our world can be difficult, and it's easy to give up hope with all the problems in our lives and in the lives of others. The gift that we receive from God this day is a way to see this world, which God so loves, with fresh hope. DECEMBER 20,

Hymn CP 95 O Come Divine Messiah Reader: John 1:1-9, 14 The Word Became Flesh In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father s only son, full of grace and truth. Mediation: The Gift of Light John's gospel story of the birth of Jesus does not talk about shepherds or wise men or a baby born in a stable. Instead, John describes Jesus' birth as light, the true light that enlightens everyone coming into the world. Light helps us see where we are going. Light helps plants to grow. Many of us like to have a nightlight to comfort us while we sleep. We are drawn to the light of a sunrise, a sunset, a fireplace, or a candle. We are drawn to Jesus, the Light of the world who helps us see where we are going, who comforts us in times of loneliness and sadness, and who helps us grow in faith and love. Jesus lights our path as we journey in trust, following him. The Gift of Light came into the world and comes into our lives at Christmas time. Hymn CP 126 Away in a Manger DECEMBER 20,

READINGS THIS WEEK AT 9AM COLLECT Heavenly Father, who chose the Virgin Mary, full of grace, to be the mother of our Lord and Saviour, now fill us with your grace, that we in all DECEMBER 20,

things may embrace your will and with her rejoice in your salvation; through Jes us Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS Gracious God, by the power of the Spirit who sanctified the mother of your Son, make holy all we offer you this day. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Faithful God, in this sacrament we receive the promise of salvation. May we, like the Virgin Mary, be obedient to your will. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF MICAH You, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days. Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labour has brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel. And he shall stand and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; and he shall be the one of peace. MICAH 5:2-5A A READING FROM THE LETTER TO THE HEBREWS When Christ came into the world, he said, "Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, 'See, God, I have come to do your will, O God' (in the scroll of the DECEMBER 20,

book it is written of me)." When he said above, "You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings" (these are offered according to the law), then he added, "See, I have come to do your will." He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. And it is by God's will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. HEBREWS 10:5-10 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her by the Lord." [And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from DECEMBER 20,

their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever."] LUKE 1:39-45 (46-55) Communion Canticle Text My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded The lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth All generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, And holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him Throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, And hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, And the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. DECEMBER 20,

Communion Motet Text There is no rose of such virtue As is the rose that bare Jesu: Alleluia. For in this rose containèd was Heaven and earth in little space: Res miran da. (wonderful happening) By that rose we may well see There be one God in Persons Three: Pares forma. (of the same form) Then leave we all this worldly mirth And follow we this joyous birth: Transeamus. (let us journey) Choral Benediction Text O Emmanuel, our King and Lawgiver, the Desire of all nations, and their Salvation: Come and save us, O Lord, our God. DECEMBER 20,
