READINGS THIS WEEK COLLECT Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world, evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS God of mercy and compassion, your Word calls us home to faith and love. Accept all we offer you this day, in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Giver of life, you enlighten all who come into the world. Fill our hearts with the splendour of your grace, that we may perfectly love you and worthily praise your holy name, through Jesus Christ the Lord. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF JOSHUA The Lord said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away from you the disgrace of Egypt." And so that place is called Gilgal to this day. While the Israelites were camped in Gilgal they kept the passover in the evening on the fourteenth day of the month in the plains of Jericho. On the day after the Passover, on that very day, they ate the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. The manna ceased on the day they ate the produce of the land, and the Israelites no longer had manna; they ate the crops of the land of Canaan that year. JOSHUA 5:9-12 A READING FROM THE SECOND LETTER OF PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS From now on, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once MARCH 6,

8 knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 CORINTHIANS 5:16-21 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to Jesus. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, "This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them." So he told them this parable: "There was a man who had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me.' So he divided his property between them. A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and travelled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living. When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. He would gladly have filled himself with the pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to MARCH 6,

9 him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands."' So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him. Then the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.' But the father said to his slaves, 'Quickly, bring out a robe - the best one - and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!' And they began to celebrate. Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing. He called one of the slaves and asked what was going on. He replied, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has got him back safe and sound.' Then he became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him. But he answered his father, 'Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him! 'Then the father said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. Bulletin Notices Annual Meeting Our 2015 Annual Meeting will be held today, Sunday, March 6, 2016 following the 10:30am Service. A light lunch will be provided to those attending. Readings and Music for Passiontide Please join our Cathedral Choir on Sunday, March 13 at 5:00 p.m. for a Service of Readings and Music for Passiontide. Palm Cross Helpers If you are interested in joining a work crew to create crosses for Palm Sunday services, please join us on Thursday, March 17 at 1p.m. by the font area (inside the main doors) of the Cathedral. No previous experience necessary! All welcome. Sunday School and March Break There is no Sunday School programming on March 13. On March 20 there is a supervised mural project in the Great. MARCH 6,

14 Hall. The nursery is open for play with parental supervision on March 13 and with Karen Cooper on March 20. Refugee Update The Tabsho family of four is currently in Egypt awaiting an exit visa. An apartment has been found and furnished for their arrival which should be sometime in March. The family is very excited to start their new life in Canada! The Alkhosi family of three is in Jordan and has just obtained a case file and should be interviewed soon. After the interview, they will need to have medicals before they make their way to Halifax. We are hopeful this will only take four to six weeks. We have managed to equip the Tabsho apartment, but have little or nothing left for the Alkhosi apartment. We need: kitchen goods (pots, pans, plates, utensils etc. etc.) dining room set (table & chairs) Living room coach, lamps, end tables, coffee table) Master Bedroom (complete) - we have some comforters Childs (boy) bedroom (complete)- we have some comforters Please contact me, Ray Carter, or Andrew Black if you can help out with any of this. Shut ins at Easter The Saint Catherine s Group will be giving a small Easter plant along with an Easter card and some treats to our Cathedral Shut ins. Anyone wishing to make a CASH donation towards the purchase of these items can give it to Judi MacDonald. Your help with this worthwhile annual project is most appreciated! MARCH 6,

15 Outreach to Infants One of our outreach projects is the Mother and Child support Programme at Phoenix House. Infant related items, baby food, formula, wipes, diapers etc. are always in need. Please consider bringing an item to the Nursery on Sundays in support of this program. Thank you! The Way of the Cross at the Cathedral On Wednesdays in Lent at 7pm, our Deacons are facilitating the Way of the Cross, using a variety of resources. Please join us for this prayerful Lenten discipline. Coffee Hour Information A warm thank you to everyone who hosted coffee hour and/or donated food throughout the fall. A sign-up sheet for February and March is now on the Greeter's Table. We would love to broaden the base of our coffee hour hosts for the 10:30 service. Several of "the regulars" are more than happy to partner with newcomers and "mentor" them through the church kitchen first time round. If you can help with this and would like to partner with "a regular", please see Gerry May, Kathie Swenson, Charlotte Cochran or Marjorie Cooper ( ). Easter Morning at the Cathedral The marvellous acoustics of our cathedral will reverberate with the joyous sounds of The Resurrection Mass on Easter morning this year at the 10:30 a.m. Choral Eucharist. Singing music by Paul Halley, Paul Winter and Duke Ellington, the Cathedral Choir will be joined by Chris Mitchell on soprano and tenor saxophones, Nick Halley on drums, Jon Suters on bass and guitars, Henk Fisher on percussion and Paul Halley MARCH 6,

16 on piano & pipe organ. Combining the traditional with the contemporary, The Resurrection Mass is sure to raise the spirits of all who participate in this wonderful celebration. Confirmation, March 26, 2016 Anyone interested in Confirmation, Renewal of Baptismal Vows, or Reception into the Anglican Communion, please contact Dean Paul Holy Week Ecumenical Breakfast Once again the Cathedral is happy to host the Monday Service at 7.30 am on March 21 st We will be providing the usual Continental breakfast in the Great Hall immediately following the service. There is a sign- up sheet by the Entry doors indicating what we have served in past years. Food items can be delivered to the Great Hall on Palm Sunday (20th) or Monday by 7:10 am clearly marked for the Breakfast. We are always grateful for your contributions to the Buffet Table. Thank you. Saints Alive Thanks and Looking Ahead Thanks are extended to Cathedral member, Ken Dauphinee, for sharing his experiences in the far and mid east at the February meeting of Saints Alive. Ken was very engaging in conveying his stories of being the other in a culturally and religiously different context. For March, Saints Alive is encouraging attendance at the open session that welcomes to our diocese, Sr. Constance-Joanna of the Sisters of St. John the Divine Friday, March 18; 2:00 4:00; Great Hall. 17 for April are still being worked on, but we will welcome on May 5, Rev. Cathy Lee Cunningham, no stranger to the Cathedral, to address the Charter for Compassion and what it means to have our Diocese be a signatory to the Charter, a resolution passed at Synod 2015: It s about the world!. Lenten Quiet Day An opportunity for spiritual growth is available to $10 (lunch included) when attending the Lenten Quiet Day 2016: Leaders of Courage, Serving by Faith, Sat. Mar. 12; 10:00 2:30; Christ Church, Lantz. The reflections and homily are being offered by 3 Postulants studying at AST: Rachel Brighton, Shirley Carras, and Bonnie Skerritt, with the text: 1 Cor. 16:13 Keep alert, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong. AST Grad Projects AST Grad Projects: This year AST students will be publicly presenting their grad projects on March 8 and 9 at the St. Columba Chapel at AST, 660 Francklyn St. Our own student, Michelle Bull, will be presenting hers on Wednesday, March 9, at 10:00 am. She researched why people without a church background start coming to church. Other topics range from physician assisted dying to dystopian films to revitalizing rural ministry.
