A READING FROM THE BOOK OF GENESIS Laban said to Jacob, "Because you are my kinsman, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?" Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. Leah's eyes were lovely, and Rachel was graceful and beautiful. Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, "I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel." Laban said, "It is better that I give her to you than that I should give her to any other man; stay with me." So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her. Then Jacob said to Laban, "Give me my wife that I may go in to her, for my time is completed." So Laban gathered together all the people of the place, and made a feast. But in the evening he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob; and he went in to her. (Laban gave his maid Zilpah to his daughter Leah to be her maid.) When morning came, it was Leah! And Jacob said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? Did I not serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?" Laban said, "This is not done in our country - giving the younger before the firstborn. GENESIS 29:15-28 A READING FROM THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE ROMANS Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified. What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else? 6 elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, "For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered." No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. ROMANS 8:26-39 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW Jesus put before them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches." He told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened. The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind; when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Have you understood all this?" They answered, "Yes." And he said to them, "Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old." Our summer tour season is well underway, with Ursula Calder, our Tour Guide at the helm. 10 Outreach to Infants One of our outreach projects is the Mother and Child support Programme at Phoenix House. Infant related items, baby food, formula, wipes, diapers etc. are always in need. Please consider bringing an item to the Nursery on Sundays in support of this program. Thank you! Call for Volunteers The Association of Anglican Deacons in Canada is holding their 2014 Conference in Halifax, August 14-17, 2014 In the tradition of Maritime Hospitality, the host committee is offering the delegates transportation from the airport to their hotel, and return if required, following the conference. To this end, volunteers will be needed to help fulfill this task. We are asking for volunteers to donate their time and talents for a few hours. There may be a call for local shuttling, but this will be determined later. There is a need for greeters at the airport to welcome the delegates and direct them to their waiting drives. Registration will close September 8 th, so time is of the essence to consider taking part. For those who register before July 31 st some additional DYC gear and swag will be offered. While the camp is more rustic than what has been experienced of late, it still has bunks with mattresses and showers - 2 essentials! Registration will once again be $75 for youth and $40 for adult leaders accompanying youth. Violence in the Middle East: Primate calls for peace, prayers By Fred Hiltz, Archbishop and Primate on July 17, 2014 A message from Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate, to the church regarding recent escalations of violence in the Middle East. Violence shall no more be heard in your land With a deep sadness the world has watched the recent es- JULY 27,

12 calations of violence in the Middle East. The Rev. Dr. Olav Fyske Tveit, General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, said in a July 15 statement: We strongly condemn the indiscriminate attacks by Israeli military on the civilian population in Gaza as we absolutely condemn the absurd and immoral firing of rockets by militants from Gaza to populated areas in Israel. His statement is in keeping with a long-held position from our church, articulated in successive General Synods including the most recent one in Since the bombing, scores of innocent men, women and children have died. In Gaza alone, almost 200 Palestinians have died and 1300 have been seriously injured. The Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City (owned and operated by The Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem) is exceeding its capacity to meet the humanitarian crisis. In the face of shortages in medicines, fuel and food, Bishop Suheil Dawani has issued an urgent appeal for help. Donations can be made through the Primate s World Relief and Development Fund. Through ACT Alliance (Action by Churches Together), we are working with local partners to provide support for those wounded and displaced in this ongoing siege. I ask for your prayers. Pray for all who have died and all who mourn. Pray for all those injured and those who tend them in the most difficult of circumstances, the hospitals and clinics themselves under the continuing threat of bombing. Pray fervently for a ceasefire, for those living in absolute fear by day and by night. Pray for world leaders who offer counsel in negotiating a settlement to this current crisis and in securing a lasting peace for all Palestinians and Israelis. Pray as Dr. Olav Fyske Tveit has said, that JULY 27,

13 together they may work to transform the discourse of hatred and revenge into one that sees the other as neighbour and as equal brother and sister in one God. Let us pray in the spirit of the prophet whose words offer abiding hope in the mercy, justice and peace of the Lord. Violence shall no more be heard in your land, devastation or destruction within your borders; you shall call your walls Salvation, and your gates Praise. (Isaiah 60:18) Pedal for PWRDF with the Ride for Refuge By Simon Chambers Attention, cycling fans (and non-cycling fans who want to support a great project)! There s a new way you can support PWRDF and get out on your bike at the same time! PWRDF has joined the Ride for Refuge, a national fundraising program encouraging people to form or join a team and ride in one of 25 locations across Canada to raise funds for the organization of their choice. The ride will take place on October 4, 2014 and teams can sign up to ride 10, 25, 50, or 100km on the day. It is designed to be very kidfriendly so families can ride together. PWRDF riders will help us raise funds to provide food for work to 12,000 people forced to flee violence in South Sudan through a partnership with Finn Church Aid (FCA) and the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB).
