R PSALM 116:1-3, A READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF PETER If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him MAY 4,

9 glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God. Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. 1 PETER 1:17-23 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, "What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?" They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?" He asked them, "What things?" They replied, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that MAY 4,

10 he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him." Then he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?" Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over." So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?" That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!" Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. LUKE 24:13-35 THIS MORNING S MUSIC First a quick rejoinder to those who might ask, Why are we singing an evening hymn in the morning and that hymn in particular? Well, that hymn, the much maligned, Abide with Me, was inspired by today s gos- MAY 4,

11 pel text, specifically Luke 24:29. While it is perhaps often played at a dirge-like tempo, the text and tune have an extraordinary beauty and power. Listen for the last verse arrangement by Sir David Willcocks. The British composer, conductor, editor, arranger and record producer. John Rutter s name is synonymous with choral music. He was made an honorary Fellow of Westminster Choir College, Princeton, and in 1988 a Fellow of the Guild of Church Musicians. In 1996, the Archbishop of Canterbury conferred a Lambeth Doctorate of Music upon him in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to church music. This morning s introit continues our post Easter joyful exuberance. As a teacher and choir trainer Herbert Sumsion was said to be demanding yet kind and encouraging, displaying that rare gift that made people want to do well for him. He was Organist of Gloucester Cathedral between 1928 and 1967 and Director of Music at Cheltenham Ladies College between 1928 and Between 1926 and 1928 he was Teacher of Harmony and Counterpoint at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. As Organist at Gloucester he was responsible for the Three Choirs Festival every three years. He was awarded his BMus from the University of Durham in 1920, the DMus from Lambeth in 1947, and was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Music. His honours included the CBE in 1961 and honorary awards from the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Organists and the Royal School of Church Music. Sumsion wrote books, services and a number of anthems, including this morn- MAY 4,

12 ing s communio which unfolds with a remarkable economy of material: a rippling, listless organ part with an attractive solo melody; rising and falling choral writing and later imitative writing, an object lesson in the development of musical material. A member of both our Congregational Council and (perhaps more importantly, our bass section) Alexander Tilley received his musical training in Montreal and at McGill University. An Irish Blessing was dedicated to the choristers in his Queen Elizabeth High School chor, Schola Cantorum in June of It is, with very good reason, a favorite of the choir. THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC On September 3rd, 1939, the German Navy received a signal to open hostilities with England at once. Seven hours later, the passenger liner SS Athenia was sunk by submarine U-30. Thus began a running battle that lasted until the final day of the Second World War in the European theatre. Canada declared war against Germany on September 10th, 1939 and the Royal Canadian Navy, the Royal Canadian Air Force, and the Merchant Navy joined the battle. The Battle of the Atlantic pitted Allied naval and air forces against the notorious German submarine wolf-packs, MAY 4,

17 whose prey were the convoys of merchant ships carrying valuable war material and personnel across the ocean. It was a bitter struggle. Although the Battle of the Atlantic was fought at sea, it touched the life of virtually every Canadian. Not only did men and women from across the country serve in the Navy, Air Force and Merchant Navy, but the overseas trade they were defending was vital to Canada. In order to preserve this critical trade and build up the supplies necessary for victory, it was essential that the convoys reach their destinations. The Battle of the Atlantic ended with V-E Day on May 8th, During the long bitter struggle, the Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force had participated in the escort of at least 200 million tons of shipping and had sunk 52 U-boats. The battle however, had been costly to Canada. Merchant ship losses totalled over 70 and 24 Canadian warships were lost. Fatal casualties in the Merchant Navy amounted to over 1700, in the Navy to over 2000, and in the Air Force to more than 900. Canadian ships and seamen, and the naval and air forces used for the defence of shipping, may well have made the most important of all Canadian contributions in the Second World War. The Battle of the Atlantic is thus an important element in the nation s history and is remembered with respect in the Canadian navy, air force and merchant marine. Battle of the Atlantic Sunday commemorates the sacrifices of sailors, merchant seaman, Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Army personnel who gave their lives in the North Atlantic. MAY 4,
