6 who have taken holy things keep faith in our hearts and lives, in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF JOB Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements - surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?" JOB 38:1-7 PSALM REFRAIN Lord, how manifold are your works! in wisdom you have made them all. Bless the Lord, O my soul; O Lord my God, how excellent is your greatness! you are clothed with majesty and splendour. You wrap yourself with light as with a cloak and spread out the heavens like a curtain. R You lay the beams of your chambers in the waters above; you make the clouds your chariot; you ride on the wings of the wind. You make the winds your messengers and flames of fire your servants. You have set the earth upon its foundations, so that it never shall move at any time. You covered it with the deep as with a mantle; the waters stood higher than the mountains. R At your rebuke they fled; at the voice of your thunder they hastened away. They went up into the hills and down to the valleys beneath, to the places you had appointed for them. You set the limits that they should not pass; they shall not again cover the earth. R O Lord, how manifold are your works! in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Hallelujah! R PSALM 104:1-9, 25, 37B A READING FROM THE LETTER TO THE HEBREWS Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honour, but takes it only when called by God, OCTOBER 21,

7 just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you"; as he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek." In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Mel-chizedek. HEBREWS 5:1-10 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MARK James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Jesus and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What is it you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" They replied, "We are able." Then Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many." MARK 10:35-45 This Morning s Music One of the most intrinsic anthems in the Anglican music canan is this morning s introit, Lord, for Thy Tender Mercy s Sake, which not only asks for forgiveness but boldly requests OCTOBER 21,

8 the means (grace) through which our lives may be amended. There is also a lovely use of the rhyme incline/decline which suggests the composer was also a wordsmith with a subtle sense of humour. But who was this composer? For years this work was attributed to Richard Farrant (c ) a composer and playwright (ah!) but no record of this introit survives in any of his manuscripts. Current scholarship suggests a more likely source of this work is John Hilton (the Elder) Hilton was a countertenor at Lincoln Cathedral. At the start of 1594 he became organist at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was the father of John Hilton the younger, also a composer, which makes definitive assignation of their combined sacred works somewhat problematic. He died in Cambridge. Sir Charles Villiers Stanford was an Irish composer, teacher and conductor. He was born in a well-off and highly musical family in Dublin, Stanford was educated at the University of Cambridge before studying music in Leipzig and Berlin. He was instrumental in raising the status of the Cambridge University Musical Society, attracting international stars to perform with it. While still an undergraduate, Stanford was appointed organist of Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1882, aged 29, he was one of the founding professors of the Royal College of Music, where he taught composition for the rest of his life. Among his pupils were rising composers whose fame went on to surpass his own, such as Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams. As a conductor, Stanford held posts with the Bach Choir and the Leeds triennial music festival. Stanford composed a substantial number of concert works, including seven symphonies, but his best-remembered pieces are his choral works for church performance, chiefly composed in the Anglican tradition. His ashes were interred in Westminster Abbey, next to Purcell s. Beati quorum via is in six parts, with divided sopranos and basses, and is meditative in character. Effective use is made of contrasting the three upper and three lower voices, and the piece is rightly regarded as one of Stanford s most exquisite unaccompanied compositions. Barry Peters is a native of Cape Breton who received his music degree from Mount Allison University in 1981 with a Certificate of Excellence in Performance. He was a private singing teacher at Unionville High School in Arts, York Music Department, and is a frequent examiner for the high school voice department. He maintains a very busy schedule as a choral singer, having sung with the Amadeus Choir, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the Elmer Isler Singers. He is a vocal coach and instructor for various summer choral camps and private instructor in organ, piano and voice and has been the Director of Music at Richmond Hill United Church since Barry can be seen singing his benediction with our choir on the Cathedral webpage. 11 Farewell for now Today we bid farewell to The Rev. Ray Carter (TSFF) for a time. Ray has accepted a 2 year appointment, by the Bishop, to serve as Deacon to the newly formed parish of The Church of the Apostles here in Halifax. Ray will assist their rector, the Rev. Mark Marshall, and serve that community as they continue to vision their future and grow together. In the service for the Ordination of a Deacon (BAS p.655) we read the following mandate: You are to make Christ and his redemptive love known, by your word and example, to those among whom you live and work and worship. You are to interpret to the Church the needs, concerns, and hopes of the world. You are to assist the bishop and priests in public worship, and in the ministration of God s word and sacraments, and you are to carry out other duties assigned to you from time to time. At all times, your life and teaching are to show Christ s people that in serving the helpless they are serving Christ himself. Our blessings and best wishes go with Ray and his wife Heather and to the people of The Church of the Apostles who will be enriched by their presence and ministry. A Warm Welcome! A warm welcome this morning to Selma Doucet. Many of you will know Selma through her work with the ACW, but it is her work with the Anglican Foundation of Canada that brings her to us today. Selma has just completed two terms as a Director on the Anglican Foundation Board and will be speaking at all of our services this morning. Chaired by the Primate of Canada, Fred Hiltz, and supported by an Executive Director, Judy Rois, and a Board of Directors, the Anglican Foundation raises funds and distributes bursaries, grants, and loans with the objective of supporting the mission and ministry of Anglicans across the country. 10:30 Coffee Hour Volunteers needed for November!
