7 PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Father, may we who have received this eucharist live in the unity of your Holy Spirit, that we may show forth his gifts to all the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ACTS When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs - in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine." ACTS 2:1-21 A READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS No one can say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who al- JUNE 8,

9 lots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body - Jews or Greeks, slaves or free - and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. CORINTHIANS 12:3B-13 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." JOHN 20:19-23 THIS MORNING S MUSIC Sir William Harris ( ) studied at the Royal College of Music under Sir Walter Parratt, Charles Wood and Sir Walford Davies. He became Davies s assistant at the Temple Church and eventually went to Lichfield Cathedral as assistant organist. In 1919 he became organist at New College Oxford and in 1923 was appointed professor of organ and harmony at the Royal College of Music. Ten years later he became organist of St George s Chapel, Windsor and was widely acknowledged to be an outstanding choir trainer much JUNE 8,

10 beloved by his choristers. Harris was not as prolific a composer as some of his colleagues in cathedral posts and wrote only a few works. His skills as a choirtrainer are reflected in his anthem-writing in that the complexities of good tuning and skills of independence of both sides of the cathedral choir are taken for granted. This morning s introit reminds us that, ultimately, we are God s temple and that because of his love, our lives should be a celebration. Eleanor Daley is one of Canada s most prolific composers. She has a special penchant for melody writing and her works are typified by their interweaving of text and harmony of which today s communio, with its templebell-like introduction and conclusion is an excellent example. She has been the Director of Music at Toronto s Fairlawn United Church since Barry Peters (b.1957) is a native of Cape Breton who received his music degree from Mount Allison University in 1981 with a Certificate of Excellence in Performance. He was a private singing teacher at Unionville High School in Arts, York Music Department, and is a frequent examiner for the high school voice department. He maintains a very busy schedule as a choral singer, having sung with the Amadeus Choir, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the Elmer Isler Singers. He is a vocal coach and instructor for various summer choral camps and private instructor in organ, piano and voice and has been the Director of Music at Richmond Hill United Church since Barry can be seen singing his benediction with our choir on the Cathedral webpage. Saints Alive looks ahead to the fall As we acknowledge Jerusalem Sunday today, Saints Alive will be inviting Mel Earley, recently returned from the Holy Land where he spent several months as a special ecumenical envoy, to an evening event in October (likely October 16 at 7:00) where he will address Life in the Holy Land Today. The plan is to extend a wide invitation for this Saints Alive hosted event. Remember, all are welcome. Saints Alive thanks all those involved in any way with the program 2013/14 presenters, participants, and producers of treats!! We appreciated having Alberta Morgan of the Halifax chapter of the Women s Interchurch Council of Canada with us for the May meeting, the final one for 2013/14. This ecumenical Christian organization promotes prayer and action with a strong social justice focus. 17 How I Spend My Summer Vacation This will mark the 9 th year that I have spent my summer preparing for, and taking part in, a remarkable event called The Prouty. It was 33 years ago, that a patient at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, affiliated with Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, died of ovarian cancer. A woman of remarkable courage and incredible hope; Audrey Prouty inspired three of her attending nurses to do something challenging in her honor, to tell her story, and raise awareness for those many others battling cancer. Those 3 nurses set out, by bicycle, on a 100 mile ride through the White Mountains to celebrate Audrey s life. Year after year the event has grown; last year some 5,800 people participated in the annual Prouty; last year raising more than 2.75 million dollars for cancer research! My younger brother, Joel, is a 10 year cancer survivor due to the extraordinary treatment and care he received at this institution, which inspired him to field a team to participate annually. After several years of biking the 100 mile route, this year I will attempt the Prouty Ultimate; two days covering 200 miles. Your support is my inspiration. Financial contributions are greatly appreciated as well as your names, or the names of people you would like remembered, on my shirt. 18 Diocesan Youth Conference 2014 Despite the loss of our Diocesan Youth Coordinator s Position, a dedicated team is committed to assure there will be a conference this fall. Slated for the weekend of October 3 rd 5 th, this year s event will be held at Camp Mockingee in Windsor, NS. The theme of the weekend is: be For God's Sake and will focus on our baptismal vow to strive to safeguard the integrity of God s creation, and respect, sustain and renew the life of the Earth. Registration will close September 8 th, so time is of the essence to consider taking part. For those who register before July 31 st some additional DYC gear and swag will be offered. While the camp is more rustic than what has been experienced of late, it still has bunks with mattresses and showers - 2 essentials! Two Choral Theatre Pieces Combine to Highlight Important Events in Nova Scotia History Xara Choral Theatre Ensemble (XCTE) will perform Waiting on the Eastern Line. Set in rural Nova Scotia during World War I, this story follows several young Nova Scotian women who travel by train to be reunited with the soldiers they love. The show features an arrangement of Helen Creighton s folksong I ll Give My Love an Apple by Xara singer Jennifer Trites, and a brand new commission by noted Canadian composer Jeff Enns. The text includes words from poet Pauline Johnson, and real newspaper headlines from 100 years ago. Xara Youth Ensemble (XYE) will perform Free as the Wind, which is based on the book of the same name by ecologist and author Jamie Bastedo and Halifax artist Susan Tooke, whose beautiful illustrations will be used as projections. Set in 1960 s Nova Scotia, the Canadian government decides to auction off the wild Sable Island horses and Canadian children write letters pleading with politicians to save them. Free as the Wind follows several young women as they rally their communities to take action and free the horses. The tour dates are as follows (tickets should be ordered directly from each theatre): June 8 th at the Musquodoboit Valley Bicentennial Theatre: June 13 th at the Astor Theatre in Liverpool: June 28 th at the King's Theatre in Annapolis Royal: This tour is a wonderful opportunity for all ages to experience an hour of moving music, support the work of talented local artists and musicians, and gain a new perspective on historical events that directly affected their own communities.
