Bach ( ) Please join us for Refreshments & Fellowship at the rear of the nave. READINGS THIS WEEK COLLECT Almighty God, you have built your Church on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone. Join us together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may become a holy temple, acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS God of truth, receive all we offer you this day. Make us worthy servants, strong to follow in the pattern of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Almighty God, may we who have been strengthened by this eucharist remain in your steadfast love, and show in our lives the saving mystery that we celebrate. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF LAMENTATIONS How lonely sits the city that once was full of people! How like a widow she has become, she that was great among the OCTOBER 6,

9 nations! She that was a princess among the provinces has become a vassal. She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they have become her enemies. Judah has gone into exile with suffering and hard servitude; she lives now among the nations, and finds no resting place; her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress. The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to the festivals; all her gates are desolate, her priests groan; her young girls grieve, and her lot is bitter. Her foes have become the masters, her enemies prosper, because the Lord has made her suffer for the multitude of her transgressions; her children have gone away, captives before the foe. From daughter Zion has departed all her majesty. Her princes have become like stags that find no pasture; they fled without strength before the pursuer. LAMENTATIONS 1:1-6 A READING FROM THE SECOND LETTER OF PAUL TO TIMOTHY Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, for the sake of the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I am grateful to God - whom I worship with a clear conscience, as my ancestors did - when I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. Recalling your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, lives in you. For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the lying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline. Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner, but join with me OCTOBER 6,

10 in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power of God, who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works but according to his own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. For this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher, and for this reason I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard until that day what I have entrusted to him. Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us. 2 TIMOTHY 1:1-14 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" The Lord replied, "If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you. Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, 'Come here at once and take your place at the table'? Would you not rather say to him, 'Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink'? Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, 'We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!'" LUKE 17:5-10 OCTOBER 6,

11 This Morning s Music Our introit by Henry Loosemore is a classic anthem in the English choral tradition which asks that our own faith be strengthened to enable us to weather all life s adversities. Very little is known about the composer s life. He was the son of an organ builder and became the organist at King s College, Cambridge in Of the very few compositions of his which remain extant, O Lord, Increase my Faith is the most widely performed. This morning s first reading will be presented in a slightly different fashion. Jesus and the disciples sang a psalm at the Last Supper, and, when he was called to read in the synagogue, he chanted the scriptures as he had done since his Bar Mitzvah. Today s reading from the Lamentations of Jeremiah has been sung by Christians to this ancient chant for 2000 years. Jews still use a version of it in the synagogue for the same text - each verse begining with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. In this beautiful melody, we catch an echo of the music that Jesus knew and sang. I am grateful to my colleague, Doug Cowling, Director of Music at St. Philip s Anglican Church, Etobicoke, for suggesting this possibility. The Cantique de Jean Racine, by the 19 year old Gabriel Fauré was dedicated to César Franck. A introspective work for four-part mixed choir and organ, it won the composer the first prize for composition at the École Niedermeyer, where at that time he was still a student. The Cantique is a setting of words by the 17th century dramatist and poet Jean Racine. It was Fauré s first significant composition. Our service concludes with Alec Tilley s setting of the traditional Irish benediction. Note the harmonies and the alterations in dynamics and tempi of and until we meet again. Tilley, both a member of the Cathedral s Congregational Council (and even more importantly from my standpoint) the Cathedral Choir, has contributed some quite wonderful anthems, canticles, and benedictions since his arrival here some years ago. And a warm welcome to former chorister, Andrew Wight, who is taking a two Sunday hiatus from his doctoral studies at the University of Ottawa and to former RCCO national president, Simon Irving, who is also singing in our choir this morning. Welcome, both! OCTOBER 6,

Support the Council of the North on October 6, 2013 Mission to Canada s North has been a priority since the earliest days of Anglican presence in Canada. In the 1970s, the Council of the North became the entity it is today and comprises the Dioceses of: the Anglican Parishes of the BULLETIN NOTICES 18

19 Central Interior (formerly Diocese of Cariboo); Yukon; Caledonia; Athabasca; Saskatchewan; Arctic; Brandon; Keewatin; Moosonee; Quebec; and the Archdeaconry of Labrador. It is a Ministry of the Whole Church by the Whole Church. On October 6, as Anglican Church Women Diocesan Presidents, Coordinators, Vice Presidents, and Guests celebrate the Eucharist at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, Halifax, to conclude the National Executive Conference 2013, Come to the Water: Women of Faith, Women of Courage, Anglican Church women from a number of these Council of the North Dioceses join their southern sister colleagues in asking for your continuing prayers and support. Special envelopes are available for your contribution on October 6. The Anglican Church Women National Executive has made the Council of the North a priority in prayer and offering and your support for this priority is greatly appreciated (Anglican Church of Canada Vision 2019 Priority: Support ministry through the Council of the North - Develop across the Anglican Church of Canada, and in consultation with the Council of the North, our whole church s capacity to support pastoral and sacramental ministry in the dioceses of the Council of the North). Also, in line with the Anglican Church of Canada Vision 2019 Priority to walk on a journey of healing and wholeness with Indigenous Peoples, it is worth noting that the emerging face of Anglican northern ministry is one of co-operation, innovation, mutual respect and, increasingly, self-determination for indigenous Anglicans. Ministry in the Council of the North has particular challenges vast distances, isolation, harsh weather, and sometimes unreliable communications networks. The continuing effects of poverty and the legacy of the residential school system also contribute to a very high level of pastoral needs. But Council ministry, in spite of or perhaps because of its particular challenges, is marked by: a mission minded approach; lean bureaucratic infrastructure; sacrificial and heroic ministry; ecumenical co-operation; flexibility and innovation; and, training and development of local leaders. Thank you for joining the Anglican Church Women National Executive in supporting the Council of the North of the Anglican Church of Canada on October 6, To learn more about the Council of the North, visit the Anglican Church of Canada website and look under Committees, Councils, and Corporations.
