6 READINGS THIS WEEK COLLECT Almighty God, you called John the Baptist to give witness to the coming of your Son and to prepare his way. Give your people the wisdom to see your purpose, and the openness to hear your will, that we too may witness to Christ's coming and so prepare his way; through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS God of our salvation, accept all we offer you this day, and free us to worship you without fear, in holiness and righteousness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION We thank you, Lord, for your word and your table which give us the knowledge of salvation. Your compassion has broken on us like the dawn; guide now our feet into the way of peace. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ISAIAH Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord's hand double for all her sins. A voice cries out: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken." A voice says, "Cry out!" And I said, "What shall I cry?" All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, "Here is your God!" 7 the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. ISAIAH 40:1-11 PSALM REFRAIN The Lord is a refuge in time of trouble. The Lord will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in time of trouble. Those who know your name will put their trust in you, for you never forsake those who seek you, O Lord. Sing praise to the Lord who dwells in Zion; proclaim to the peoples the things he has done. The avenger of blood will remember them; he will not forget the cry of the afflicted. R Have pity on me, O Lord; see the misery I suffer from those who hate me, O you who lift me up from the gate of death; So that I may tell of all your praises and rejoice in your salvation in the gates of the city of Zion. R The ungodly have fallen into the pit they dug, and in the snare they set is their own foot caught. The Lord is known by his acts of justice; the wicked are trapped in the works of their own hands. The wicked shall be given over to the grave, and also all the peoples that forget God. For the needy shall not always be forgotten, and the hope of the poor shall not perish for ever. R PSALM 9:9-20 A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ACTS On the sabbath day Paul and his company went into the synagogue and sat down. After the reading of the law and the prophets, the officials of the synagogue sent them a message, saying, "Brothers, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, give it." So Paul stood up and with a gesture began to speak: "You Israelites, and others who fear God, listen. The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it. For about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness. After he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance for about four hundred fifty years. After that he gave them judges until the time of the prophet Samuel. Then they asked for a king; and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, who reigned for forty years. 8 When he had removed him, he made David their king. In his testimony about him he said, 'I have found David, son of Jesse, to be a man after my heart, who will carry out all my wishes.' Of this man's posterity God has brought to Israel a Saviour, Jesus, as he promised; before his coming John had already proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John was finishing his work, he said, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but one is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of the sandals on his feet.' My brothers, you descendants of Abraham's family, and others who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent." ACTS 13:14B-26 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him Zechariah after his father. But his mother said, "No; he is to be called John." They said to her, "None of your relatives has this name." Then they began motioning to his father to find out what name he wanted to give him. He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, "His name is John." And all of them were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God. Fear came over all their neighbours, and all these things were talked about throughout the entire hill country of Judea. All who heard them pondered them and said, "What then will this child become?" For, indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him. Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy: "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favourably on his people and redeemed them. He has raised up a mighty saviour for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, JUNE 24,

9 might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins. By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel. LUKE 1:57-80 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MARK On that day, when evening had come, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let us go across to the other side." And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, "Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?" And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?" Alora will be welcoming visitors and offering Tours of the Cathedral Tuesday Saturday, 9am 4pm. Fill a Backpack Back to School Program Renuka Koilpillai, on behalf of the Parker Street Food Bank is collecting back packs and school supplies for children in the HRM. This is a very important service to the Community, as the cost of a backpack complete with supplies is approximately $ A list of needed supplies can be found on the table at the entrance to the Cathedral. Donated backpacks and supplies can be dropped off in the box at the main doors of the Cathedral. Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated. St. Andrew s Summer Concert Series St. Andrew s Summer Concert Series presents Truro soprano Jana Miller with pianist Jennifer Szeto on Thursday July 12 at 7:30 pm at St. Andrew s United, corner of Coburg and Robie. Jana will be well known to Berwick Camp attendees. She is a recent graduate of the M. Mus. program at McGill University and winner of the Eckhardt-Grammaté competition in She will be participating in the Halifax Summer Opera Workshop in July. 14 Volunteer treasurer oversees Foundation finances Ali Symons, Anglican Church of Canada The Anglican Foundation is managing finances in a whole new way. Dr. Daphne Rixon, accounting professor at Saint Mary's University, Halifax, has been appointed as the foundation's first external, pro bono treasurer. Ms. Rixon, a fellow of Certified Management Accountants Canada, began in May. She will oversee the foundation's finances and guide foundation staff Jonathan Marshall and Kavitha Gunaseelan as they take on more day-to-day financial work at the Toronto office. The shift to a new system began in May when foundation treasurer Jim Cullen retired. The Rev. Canon Dr. Judy Rois, Anglican Foundation executive director, had learned that it is common for organizations the size of the foundation to have a pro bono treasurer. It would also save them money. Ms. Rois approached Ms. Rixon on the recommendation of Alex Faseruk, a foundation board member and finance professor at Memorial University. "I wanted to do everything I could to assure donors that we're keeping admin costs at a low percentage," said Judy Rois, executive director of the Anglican Foundation. Now only 3.2% of the foundation's costs are spent on administration. The charity standard is that organizations spending less than 5% on administration are well managed, said Ms. Rois. For Ms. Rixon, becoming treasurer was another way to give back. A native of St. John's, Nfld., Ms. Rixon also serves as volunteer treasurer of two academic business associations: the Administrative Sciences Association and the Atlantic School of Business. 15 She said "yes" to the foundation after researching its outreach work. She said she was especially touched by Hope Bear, the foundation's intrepid mascot and subject of a recent book. "I am looking forward to seeing the foundation evolve and become more current with needs of Anglicans today," said Ms. Rixon. "I want to be able to contribute to this work." Founded in 1957, the Anglican Foundation has distributed close to $30 million in loans and grants throughout the Anglican Church of Canada. The foundation has diversified under the work of Ms. Rois, who became executive director in In addition to supporting building construction, the foundation funds greening initiatives, the arts, and youth programs.
