READINGS THIS WEEK COLLECT Lord God our redeemer, who heard the cry of your people and sent your servant Moses to lead them out of slavery, free us from the tyranny of sin and death, and by the leading of your Spirit bring us to our promised land; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS God of constant love, you have guided your people in all times and ages. May we who offer you our praise today always be ready to follow where you lead; we ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION God our guide, you have fed us with bread from heaven as you fed the people of Israel. May we who have been inwardly nourished be ready to follow you all our days; we 6

ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF JOEL O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the Lord your God; for he has given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the later rain, as before. The threshing floors shall be full of grain, the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. I will repay you for the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent against you. You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame. You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other. And my people shall never again be put to shame. Then afterward I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out my spirit. I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls. JOEL 2:23-32 A READING FROM THE SECOND LETTER OF PAUL TO TIMOTHY As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, 7

will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing. At my first defence no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. 2 TIMOTHY 4:6-8, THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE Jesus also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted." LUKE 18:9-14 This Morning s Music One of the most intrinsic anthems in the Anglican music canon is this morning s introit, Lord, for Thy Tender Mercy s Sake, which not only asks for forgiveness but boldly requests the means (grace) through which our lives may be amended. There is also a lovely use of the rhyme incline/decline which suggests the composer was also a wordsmith with a subtle sense of humour. But who was this composer? For years this work was attributed to Richard Farrant (c ) a composer and playwright (ah!) but no record of this introit survives in any of his manuscripts. Current scholarship suggests a more likely source of this work is John Hilton (the Elder) Hilton was a countertenor 8

at Lincoln Cathedral. At the start of 1594 he became organist at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was the father of John Hilton the younger, also a composer, which makes definitive assignation of their combined sacred works somewhat problematic. He died in Cambridge. I apologize for again including my note on this morning s Communio, Thou Knowest, Lord, the Secrets of Our Hearts, which, through an uncharacteristic lack of mindfulness, appeared in last week s bulletin. But for those who haven t read it, herewith The funeral of Queen Mary on March 5 th, 1695 was, so accounts tell us, an extraordinary occasion. The procession made its way through the streets of London to Westminster Abbey where Henry Purcell, in his capacities as both the leading composer of the day and as organist of the Abbey, had written music for the major parts of the service. The anthem that day was Thou Knowest, Lord, the Secrets of Our Hearts for which the accompaniment was provided by four flatt trumpets trumpets with a reverse slide. The anthem is chordal almost throughout, and maintains a startling control of melodic line and harmony. There could be few prayers more passionately or more simply stated and accounts of that service relate that Purcell s music moved many to tears. Thirty years later, William Croft was composing a new Burial Service endeavouring as near as possible I could, to imitate that great Master. But he included Purcell s own setting of this prayer: The reason why I did not compose that verse anew is obvious to every artist. The anthem was repeated at Purcell s own funeral in Westminster Abbey. To my way of thinking, this piece could well be the prayer of the penitent tax collector described in this morning s gospel. The composer and conductor, Peter C. Lutkin was born in Thompsonville, Wisconsin and studied music in Europe. He served as church organist at St. Clement s and St. James, Chicago, in the 1880s and 1890s. Around 1895, he founded the School of Music at Northwestern University. He also helped found the American Guild of Organists. As a composer, Lutkin specialized in writing unaccompanied choral 9

music, primarily for his choir. He wrote at least 30 hymn tunes, numerous songs for children, and 65 sixty-five choral anthems, some of which remain in print today. Of this morning s benediction, perhaps Lutkin s best known work, the famous American evangelist Dwight L. Moody wrote (in his usual hypernolic fashion), Here is a ben-e-dict-ion that can give all the time with-out be-ing im-pov-er-ished. Ev-ery heart may ut- ter it, every let-ter may con-clude with it, ev-ery day may be-gin with it, ev-ery night may be sanc-ti-fied by it. Here is bless-ing keep -ing shin-ing the up-lift-ing up-on our poor life of all heaven s glad morn-ing. It is the Lord Him-self who [gives us] this bar of mu-sic from hea-ven s in-fi-nite an-them. Um, indeed!
