PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Father, may we who have received this eucharist live in the unity of your Holy Spirit, that we may show forth his gifts to all the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF GENESIS Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly." And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth." The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. And the Lord said, "Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one another's speech." So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 7 A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ACTS When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean? But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine." But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 'In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day. Then everyone who MAY 19,

8 calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.'" ACTS 2:1-21 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN Philip said to Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. [I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid."] JOHN 14:8-17 (25-27) This Morning s Music Sir William McKie was born in Melbourne. He graduated from the Royal College of Music and was organ scholar at Worcester College Oxford, where his name is recorded on the console doors of the Nicholson organ in the College Chapel. His first appointment was as director of music at Clifton College in Bristol between 1926 and 1930 when he returned to Melbourne to become city organist. MAY 19,

9 He returned to England in 1938 to become Informator Choristarum at Magdalen College Oxford, and in 1941 became organist and Master of the Music at Westminster Abbey. McKie stayed at the Abbey until 1963 and during these years directed the music for the royal wedding in 1947 and the Coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953; he was knighted in the same year. He is buried in the West Cloister at Westminster Abbey. The anthem We wait for thy loving-kindness, O God was written in 1947 for the marriage of HRH The Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten in Westminster Abbey. The original instructions for the marriage ceremony were that it was to be a simple service and not a state occasion. The King stipulated the service should not last more than fifty-five minutes. McKie s response is to be heard in the simplicity of this anthem. The German born pianist, composer, and music educator Jean Berger, was born Arthur Schloßberg into a Jewish family in Hamm, Westphalia, and grew up in Alsace-Lorraine. He studied musicology at the universities of Vienna and Heidelberg, where he received his Ph.D. in While working as the assistant conductor at an opera house in Mannheim, he was forcibly removed from a rehearsal by Brown Shirts. After the Nazi Party seized power in Germany in 1933, he moved in Paris, where he took the French name Jean Berger, and toured widely as a pianist and accompanist. From 1939 to 1941, he was assistant conductor at the Municipal Theater in Rio de Janeiro and on the faculty of the Brazilian Conservatory. He also toured widely throughout South America. In 1941, he moved to the United States and served in the U.S. Army starting in In 1943, he became a US citizen. He worked in the Office of War Information producing foreignlanguage broadcasts and USO shows until From 1946 to 1948, he worked as an arranger for CBS and NBC and toured as a concert accompanist. The Eyes of All, with its text taken from this morning s psalm, has been part of standard repertoire of American high school and college choirs, as well as professional and amateur ensembles, for many years. Originally, the hymn tune, SURSUM CORDA, was meant to be sung in unison with very little, if any accompaniment, and initially, the Scarlett/ Peacey text of this morning s choral benediction was set out that way. Alexander Tilley s arrangement captures the essence of this Pentecost text in a wonderful four-part version. Tilley, for the benefit of those visiting us this morning, is a member of both our Congregational Council and (perhaps more importantly, our bass section) He received his musical training in Montreal and at McGill University. Come to St. George s Greek Orthodox Church on Wednesday afternoon, May 29, at 2:00 pm, when Father Maropoulos will provide a tour of one of these sacred places - the interior of St. George s - along with an explanation of the icons that adorn the interior. One does not have to have attended Saints Alive in March, when Lent and Easter traditions of the Greek Orthodox Church were explored, to attend on May 29. All Orthodox Christians follow the same calendar for Easter, celebrated on May 5 this year. The history of St. George s Greek Orthodox Church is closely linked to the Anglican Diocese and the Cathedral because of the first Greek Orthodox Church on the corner of Morris & Queen Streets having been the site of the former St. Luke s Anglican Church Hall, associated with St. Luke s Pro-Cathedral, destroyed by fire in See Cynthia ( or cynthia.pilichos@ns.sympatico.ca) regarding transportation to St. George s, 38 Purcell s Cove Road, on May 29. 14 Calling University and College Students! University and College Students enrolled full time in the 2013/2014 academic year are invited to apply for the Cathedral s Summer Tour Guide position. We are looking for a person who is comfortable and confident working in the Cathedral, at times on their own. Preference will be given to a bilingual candidate. This person will also be available to start work on Tuesday, July 2 through August 30th. Details are as follows: $10.30/hour. Tuesday Friday 9am 4pm, Saturday 9:30am-12:30pm. An Appeal for Books of Alternative Services As some of you have noticed our supply of The Book of Alternative Services has seen a great deal of wear and tear. Some covers show a great deal of wear, but inside all the pages are there. We have been using book binding tape to repair the covers to allow us a few more years of use. Other books which look good on the outside have missing pages and are being collected to be disposed of in the proper manner. It is hoped that if every member of our church congregation gave $23.00 we could buy a Book of Alternative Service to replace those being disposed of and increase our supply. If you wish the book given in memory of a loved one this can be noted on the inside cover. If you could place a envelope with your donation and how you would like the dedication to read in the collection plate this will allow us to purchase much needed new prayer books. Saint Catherine s Group The Saint Catherine s Group will be holding a bake sale following the 10:30am Service on May 26 th. BULLETIN NOTICES 14

15 Outreach to Infants Sunday School Barbecue! Donations of salads and sweets for the Sunday School Closing Barbecue on June 9 after the 10:30 service would be very much appreciated. Please sign on the sheet provided on the Greeter's Table if you are able to contribute. One of our outreach projects is the Mother and Child support Programme coordinated by Elizabeth Corkum at Phoenix House. Infant related items, baby food, formula, wipes, diapers etc. are always in need. Please consider bringing an item to the cathedral for this ongoing program. Thank you for your support! 17 Joint Pentecost letter from Anglican, Lutheran leaders Anglican Church of Canada May 13, Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, has issued this joint pastoral letter for Pentecost with Bishop Susan C. Johnson, National Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. The two churches share a full communion agreement that includes joint mission work and a joint national meeting in July Beloved in Christ, Almost two-thousand years ago an anxious group of disciples gathered in a room in Jerusalem. Although they had had a series of extraordinary encounters with their risen Lord, they were hesitant to share those experiences with others. Then came a moment of liberation. On the day of Pentecost the Spirit that Jesus promised swept through the house where they were staying and the power of the Most High came upon them. Their fears were banished and their hopes renewed. Despite the ridicule and the opposition of others, the disciples began to share the good news of God in Christ. BULLETIN NOTICES 17

18 Moving outwards from Jerusalem, the early Christian disciples quickly incorporated many others into this new movement. The Spirit began to speak through them in the many languages of the ancient world and, through the witness of Christians throughout the centuries, continues to speak in the many languages and diverse cultures of our world. You call from tomorrow, you break ancient schemes, from the bondage of sorrow the captives dream dreams; our women see visions, our men clear their eyes, with bold new decisions, your people arise. ("Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness" by James Manley) As we prepare for the first Joint Assembly of the Anglican Church of Canada and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, we know that there are some who, like our ancestors in the faith, may be just a little dispirited as we face the challenges of our times. But just as surely as God's Spirit inspired the first generation of believers, that same Spirit is working in us to give us the words to speak to one another and to those who are seeking something-dare we say, "Someone"-to believe in. Our coming "Together for the Love of the World" will be a visible sign of the Spirit working in and among us. It will be time to take counsel together for the common good of both our churches and for the common good of our world. It will be a time to set our fears aside and arise with "bold new decisions." As we wish you blessings for Pentecost we ask your prayers for the Joint Assembly. May the Spirit preside in our midst and lead us in a yet deeper and broader common witness to the gospel of Christ.
