READINGS THIS WEEK Collect Grant us, Almighty God, after the example of your holy servant Francis, to do what you would have us do, and always to desire what is pleasing in your sight, that cleansed by your love, enlightened by your truth, and kindled with the fire of your Holy Spirit, we may follow in the footsteps of your beloved Son and make our way to you, 0 God most High; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Prayer over the Gifts Loving God, join our offering to the sacrifice of your only Son, that our service may be stamped with his humility and bear the image of his obedience; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Prayer after Communion God of all goodness, Who gave to your servant Francis a will to be the servant of all, Grant us in our service of your gospel to hold back nothing of ourselves for ourselves, that Christ may receive the whole of our lives into the habitations of light and glory; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Jeremiah 22:13-16 Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness, and his upper rooms by injustice, who makes his neighbours work for nothing, and OCTOBER 4,

does not give them their wages; who says, I will build myself a spacious house with large upper rooms, and who cuts out windows for it panelling it with cedar, and painting it with vermilion. Are you a king because you compete in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink and do justice and righteousness? Then it was well with him. He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well. Is not this to know me? says the LORD. Galatians 6:14-18 May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is anything; but a new creation is everything! As for those who will follow this rule peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. From now on, let no one make trouble for me; for I carry the marks of Jesus branded on my body. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen. Matthew 11:25-30 At that time Jesus said, I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. OCTOBER 4,

PSALM 148:7-14 Chant No. 9 Praise the Lord / from the earth,* you sea monsters / and all deeps; fire and hail, / snow and fog,* tempestuous wind, do-/ing his will; mountains / and all hills,* fruit trees / and all cedars; wild beasts / and all cattle,* creeping things and / wing-ed birds; kings of the earth / and all peoples,* princes and all rulers / of the world; young / men and maidens,* old and / young together. Let them praise the name / of the Lord,* for his name only is exalted, his splendor is over / earth and heaven. He has raised up strength for his people and praise for all his / loyal servants,* the children of Israel, a people who are near him. Hal-/lelujah! OCTOBER 4,

Introit Text 1 Lord, make us servants of your peace; Where there is hate, may we sow love; Where there is hurt, may we forgive; Where there is strife, may we make one. 2 Where all is doubt, may we sow faith; Where all is gloom, may we sow hope; Where all is night, may we sow light; Where all is tears, may we sow joy. 3 Jesus, our Lord, may we not seek To be consoled, but to console, Nor look to understanding hearts, But look for hearts to understand. 4 May we not look for love s return, But seek to love unselfishly, For in our giving we receive, And in forgiving are forgiven. 5 Dying, we live, and are reborn Through death s dark night to endless day: Lord, make us servants of your peace, To wake at last in heaven s light. Words: St. Francis of Assisi (paraphrased by James Quinn) Communion Motet Texts O quam gloriosum est regnum in quo cum Christo gaudent omnes Sancti. Amicti stolis albis, et sequuntur Agnum quocumque ierit. O how glorious is the kingdom, where all the Saints rejoice with Christ! Dressed in white robes, and they follow the Lamb wheresoever he goes. OCTOBER 4,

Ave Verum corpus, natum de Maria Virgine: Vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine: Cujus latus perforatum, unda fluxit sanguine: Esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine. Amen. Hail, true Body, born of the Virgin Mary, who has truly suffered, was sacrificed on the cross for mortals, whose side was pierced, whence flowed water and blood: Be for us a foretaste of heaven during our final examining. Amen. Choral Benediction Text God be in my head, and in my understanding; God be in mine eyes, and in my looking; God be in my mouth, and in my speaking; God be in my heart, and in my thinking; God be at mine end, and at my departing. Words: Old English Prayer from Sarum Primer Bulletin Notices Welcome Capella Regalis! A warm welcome this morning to Capella Regalis Men and Boys Choir, who are singing at the 10:30am Service. Capella Regalis Men and Boys Choir was founded by director Nick Halley in 2010 and is modeled on the centuries-old European tradition of men and boys church choirs. While Canada was once rich with such choirs, Capella Regalis is one of only a handful of liturgical men and boys choirs active in. OCTOBER 4,

Canada today. The choir is in residence at the University of King s College Chapel under Chaplain Canon Dr. Gary Thorne, and currently comprises 17 boys ages 6 14 in a Senior Choir and a training choir, and twelve men (including professional singers, university students, and older boys whose voices have changed). Starting on October 13, the choir is thrilled to be singing its weekly Choral Evensong in the Cathedral each Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. All are warmly invited to attend. In addition to weekly services, the choir performs concerts throughout Nova Scotia and beyond in a busy September June season. The choir s debut recording, My Eyes for Beauty Pine, has garnered high praise from musicians across the country. The choir has been invited to sing in parishes around Nova Scotia, has completed three tours of the province, performed at the invitation of the Lt. Governor of Nova Scotia, and sung on prime time radio for CBC s Information Morning. Capella Regalis is a free programme open to any boy who passes an audition. We are always looking for more choristers, so if you know a boy who enjoys music, please let us know. The choir is a registered Nova Scotia non-profit society, and an educational outreach programme of Musique Royale, a music presenting charity. For further information, including how to support the choir, how to schedule an audition, and the choir s service and concert schedule, visit Sunday School Info On Thanksgiving Sunday the nursery program is up and running but there is no other Sunday School programming due to teacher absences. Regular programming resumes Oct. 18. OCTOBER 4,

Blessing of the Animals Please join us today, Sunday, October 4 at 2pm for our Blessing of the Animals Service. All creatures great and small welcome. Information regarding Refugee Sponsorship Many people have been asking about the Cathedral's response to the current refugee situation. The outreach committee is to meet in the near future to discuss what our response will be and to seek support from the Congregational Council later this month. The direction we hope to take is to gather resources, people and funds, to support at least one family going forward. The situation is changing almost daily regarding the availability of refugees ( Syrian and others) as the Federal election campaign progresses. I am watching it closely and will report back to the Congregation as soon as possible. If anyone wants to discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact me, Ray Carter at (902) Do you love Facebook? Do you love Facebook? Take the Toucan Challenge! World Food Day is October 16 th, a day to take action against hunger. On October 16, people around the world come together to declare their commitment to eradicate hunger in our lifetime. Because when it comes to hunger, the only acceptable number in the world is zero. World Food Day also marks the creation of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on October 16, 1945 in Quebec. First established in 1979, World Food Day is now observed in almost every country by millions of people. Between September 21 st and October 16 th we challenge you to take action. As we celebrate the fall harvest and Thanksgiving let us remember how blessed we are and those whose resources are hard pressed to provide a daily meal. When you go shopping consider adding 2 canned (or non-perishable items) to your cart and bring them to church to feed the Toucan! You can make a difference! FEED Nova Scotia, which provides food to 146 member food banks and meal programs in our province, will receive our offerings. OCTOBER 4,

Annual Candlelight Vigil Day for Sisters in Spirit - October 4 Sisters in Spirit, supported by the Native Women s Association of Canada (NWAC), hold candlelight vigils each year on October 4th in communities across Canada. Native and non-native women and men come together at these vigils to honour the lives of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls. In so doing, participants remember the lives of sisters, daughters, mothers and grandmothers tragically taken from their families and loved ones. Each candle is a beacon of hope and strength. Funded by Status of Women Canada (SWC), Sisters In Spirit (SIS) was a research, education and policy initiative driven and led by Aboriginal women. The primary goal was to conduct research and raise awareness of the alarmingly high rates of violence against Aboriginal women and girls in Canada. The SIS team worked closely with families to ensure that their experiences and recommendations were well documented. Above all else, the Sisters in Spirit team focused on restoring the memory of these missing or murdered women and girls.
