Redland People, It s June. It s a time when we begin to swing into summer mode. We will spend more time outside. We will through family vacations engage the world more directly. So, now it s a good time to remember that as Christians we are to engage the world as Christ did. Jesus engaged the world in several ways. First, he engaged it in healing and restoring, as well as dying for and be raised up in order to offer what only God could do. In this we cannot follow, but we can surely witness to it. Jesus was also an example for us. He also engaged through working with and being with. We can come up beside others and work with them in finding their solutions and resourcing them so they might be successful. We do this through our missional outreach like the Outreach center, back-pack program, serving at the Salvation Army, and various other ways awe s come in relationship with our own families and their needs. Then there is just a time when we are being with someone, offering our presence and nothing else. This we do when we visit in sick and injured at hospitals and at home. We cannot cure them, but we can be with them. That is present as Christ is present to us. We can lament with them. We can speak of God s love for them. We can be the hand they hold. This is also true with aging family members, those who grieve, those who are struggling with addictions and other common ailments of society. This is all to say that as disciples, followers of Christ, summer months continue to be a time when we can use our Christian practices with each and every one we meet along the way. May you be safe as you travel, may you be a blessing to all you engage this summer, as our Almighty God steadfastly watches over you. Amen. Open every Saturday from 9 AM - Noon. Missions & Outreach HISTORY OF THE REDLAND OUTREACH CENTER The Outreach Center was founded by Linda Keister in the late 1990 s while Rev. Brian Oldham was the pastor. The original center was operated from the old Redland Chapel, a few miles from the current location, and started with two large coffin-sized boxes of clothing in the center of one of the rooms. Along with a Food pantry, the clothing from these boxes were sorted, ironed, and hung with the only other supplies on hand - an iron & an ironing board. Since we shared the space with the Boy Scouts, everything had to be put out and put away every Saturday. When Linda and her husband moved away, she donated several heavy-duty racks to the Outreach which are still in use today. At that time is also when Dorothy Boyd took the reins and has, along with the help of many, kept Linda s vision going. In the beginning, clothing and food was given away but very few people took advantage of the Outreach. In truth, the center would sometimes go almost a month without visitors. After Rev. Jack Julcher became pastor, the Outreach begin to charge small amounts for items - and the center began to see more people every Saturday and more donations began coming in. When the chapel was sold, the Outreach Center had to be put in storage for nearly a year. However, David Whitacre stepped up and was instrumental in arranging our move to our current location (the old Virginia Farm Market). Many folks helped get the building cleaned and ready to open, more racks & tables were donated, and Dick Boyd installed shelves and poles. Dick always enjoyed visiting with the folks who came through the center s doors. These days, there are people waiting in line on any given Saturday and parking has become a challenge. Recently, Rev. Andy Brock has added a scripture and prayer opportunity for those waiting in line (before the Outreach officially opens) allowing them to go inside the building and out of the elements. This has been well received with some asking for prayers for loved ones and friends. The volunteers on Saturdays now includes several community neighbors as well as a core group of Redland attendees. One popular area of the center is the Children s area equipped with a small table & chairs so the children of shoppers can be occupied with coloring, drawing, and reading books. Ellie Morell liked to shepherd the children to this special area - and the children looked forward to seeing her on Saturday mornings. There is a hard working group of volunteers from the church & the community who are at the Outreach Center every Wednesday & Saturday helping to sort, price, and organize the generous donations received each week as well as transitioning the center seasonally. Funds raised the resale of Outreach Center donations are used to help our neighbors in need from the community. Sunday Morning Small Groups With the beginning of one worship 9:30 AM on Sunday s during the summer months, Sunday morning small groups meeting times will also change. All groups (except Meet at the Market ) will meet before 8:30 AM. Meet at the Market group will meet after 10:30 AM. All are invited and welcome to Meet at the Market as this group offers a great opportunity for weekly fellowship. New Study coming soon to the Upper Room Jesus had about three years to mold a dozen fearful, faithless men into the pillars of a worldwide movement. Using the book, The Twelve Disciples, we will study Jesus first followers and see that, despite the brief window, time in Jesus presence had a transforming effect on each of them and they would be changed by Jesus power. Youth Group The Youth Group will not meet on Wednesday evenings during the summer but will instead attend Fireside Fridays and pick back up in September.
