On December 6, 2017, Pope Francis named the church a minor basilica due to its important role in the growth of the Catholic Church in North America.
5 Celebrating CDU S 35TH ANNIVERSARY Inspired with a vision to educate adults, especially the laity, in the teachings of the Church in response to the Second Vatican Council s proclamation of the universal call to holiness, the Catholic Home Study Institute was established in 1983 to foster an encounter with the living word of God through correspondence education accessible from home. Today CDU is a fully online accredited Catholic university awarding degrees and certificates in theology, religious education, and the liberal arts. CDU partners with Catholic dioceses, institutions, and organizations, serving a global student body and educating leaders for the New Evangelization. Ninety percent of our graduates serve the Church, sharing their intellectual gifts and love of God. "The thirty-fifth anniversary of Catholic Distance University is a milestone to celebrate. The University s pursuit of excellence and the search for truth coupled with a pioneer spirit in the world of distance learning make this educational community a model. Mindful of the confusion in today s society, I give thanks for this instrument enabled to deepen knowledge of the Catholic faith in order to promote the New Evangelization. ARCHBISHOP TIMOTHY P. BROGLIO Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees and University Chancellor
6 CDU's mission is unique in Catholic higher education. As a pioneer in distance education, CDU communicates the mind and heart of the Church in a digital world. CDU educates teachers and learners worldwide in theology, the liberal arts, and faith development for the growth of faith in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic Church. CDU trains leaders through its degree programs in theology and the liberal arts as well as through noncredit continuing education programs for all adults in service to the New Evangelization.
