With both St. Stephen and the Holy Innocents, we remember that suffering is still part of our world and we who live in it will suffer. But we do not suffer without hope.

The Feast of the Holy name of Jesus is a reminder of the power of that name, when spoken with faith, when crying out in pain that name is a proclamation of our trust in Him to save us.

So don t make Christmas end too soon, keep these 12 days and these Feasts as a reminder of what your life is to be about.

In these 12 days of Christmas we celebrate some intriguing days; among them the Feast of St. Stephen, the first Martyr, the Feast of St. John the Apostle, the Feast of the Holy Innocents (which, traditionally celebrated on December 28 th is preempted by todays feast), the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God (aka, New Year s Day), the Holy Name of Jesus and the Epiphany! Wow, that s a lot to unpack, but in these days we say something profound about who Jesus is and what our life in Jesus is to be about. The Feast of Mary reminds us that Jesus chose to share in our flesh, our suffering is His suffering - He knows our pain. And that is the message we have to share with the entire world in the Feast of the Epiphany! Anointing of the Sick Please notify the parish office as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lord s special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere, and as often as once a month. SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Take a time out to communicate Sometimes, kids need a place to go where they can say what they want, and they won t be immediately punished or have to deal with a negative reaction. It s important to make sure your child has such a space or time after dinner conversations, an ice cream spot, riding home from school where they can tell you what s on their mind, good or bad, and you can just listen and discuss, without taking the instant parental approach. If your children feel safe talking to you openly, you are better equipped to notice and handle any red flags in their lives.
