1 January 24, 2016 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing Luke 4:21 Our Mission: Sharing Faith, Celebrating Traditions, and Serving Each Other to the Praise and Glory of God Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Today begins the most distinctive characteristic of the Lectionary's year C: the semi-continuous reading of Luke's Gospel during Ordinary Time. The passage begins with the Gospel's first four verses an address to "Theophilus," the "friend of God" for whom this Gospel was written then leaps ahead to the first event in Jesus' public ministry. In it, Jesus proclaims a passage from Isaiah filled with images of the Messiah, then makes a startling announcement: "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing." Unfortunately, Jesus' amazing proclamation may be a bit overshadowed by the long Second Reading from First Corinthians, which speaks of the many parts of Christ's body. While the passage is beautiful in its long form, the short form might make a better choice in this instance, allowing a clearer connection between the First Reading and the Gospel. When these two are proclaimed together, Jesus' identity as a teacher who brings messianic fulfillment stands out more readily. Homilists may want to highlight the beauty and challenge of Jesus' message, drawing on the Collect in requesting "that in the name of your beloved Son we may abound in good works." In a sense, we are asking God to make us good students of Jesus' "good works." Still, this liturgy with its many images "light" and "life" appear in the Communion Antiphon alone may be a challenge for liturgy preparers. By now, Christmas is truly over, and perhaps the assembly is already settling in to the northern hemisphere winter "blahs." A worthy celebration of Eucharist may be what they need to "sing a new song to the Lord" (Entrance Chant). By Bryan M. St. James Holy Redeemer School Mission St. James Elementary and Holy Redeemer Middle School provide excellence in Catholic education, welcoming families from all backgrounds and embracing cultural diversity. We collaborate with parents in the formation of their child s religious, academic, physical, and creative education. Recognizing the dignity and uniqueness of each student, our staff develops curricular programs and instructional activities that address the various learning styles of our students. St. James Elementary and Holy Redeemer Middle School promote in each child the skills necessary for life as a productive follower of Jesus Christ. Philosophy St. James Elementary and Holy Redeemer Middle School form a family centered community based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. We recognize parents as the primary educators of their children and teachers as facilitators in the process of learning. We develop in each student a personal relationship with God and each other in a commitment to our Catholic faith through service and worship. DID YOU KNOW? SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Setting boundaries fosters healthy relationships We create boundaries to keep our lives in order, for example many adults separate personal and professional relationships. Trusted adults can help teach children to do the same. Boundaries are essential in the foundation of relationships, and children should be comfortable expressing where they draw their own lines. No means no is easy to say in theory, but it should be respected in practice by your kids and their friends, teachers and other adults. Teach your kids how to explore their own comfort zones and give them time to tell you about their experiences. Open communication helps them understand that setting boundaries is part of life.
