2 OUR PASTOR S LETTER Dear friends in Christ, Maranatha - Come Lord Jesus, is the cry of Advent! In the Scriptures for today, both the Prophet Isaiah and the Responsorial Psalm speak of a day when Justice and Peace will prevail. The Gospel speaks of a day when God will destroy all evil and gather all that is good into His barn. This is an image of our future. The return of Jesus is not a time to fear, but a time for which we long. The way to remove any fear from our hearts about this day is to commit ourselves more strongly to the acts for mercy, justice and peace; to forgive and seek forgiveness. For those who ready their hearts in this manner, the cry: Maranatha - Come Lord Jesus, is a joyful cry! To that end, I invite you to seek out one of the many opportunities for the Sacrament of Penance being offered in our Deanery (a complete list is on our website: Please also look for the Holy Day Schedule there. Mary, the Immaculate Conception is the Patroness of the United States of America. I would call all Catholics to keep the Feast and pray for our country as we transition to our new administration and to pray for our elected leaders. There are four Masses to choose from, surely one of them fits your schedule. And finally, this is the Sunday when we ask every parish family to make an intentional commitment to financially support the works of our Parish. I m sure that you have noticed that we have been praying each week before the collection at Mass and actually pausing so people have time to open their wallets and purses. Each prayer focuses our minds and hearts on why we give. Each prayer acknowledges and thanks you for your gift. I challenge those who do not give to ask yourselves: Why do I not support the good works our community provides? Open your minds and hearts to acknowledge the Christians responsibility to give and not just take. We need everyone s support to continue the mission. I thank all who make their commitment today. As always, I wish you peace. - Fr. Ed TODAY S READINGS First Reading He shall bring justice for the afflicted; the earth shall overflow with the knowledge of the LORD (Isaiah 11:1-10). Psalm Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for ever (Psalm 72). Second Reading Glorify God by living in harmony with one another, welcoming each other as Christ welcomed you (Romans 15:4-9). Gospel Produce good fruit worthy of your baptism; repent, for the reign of God is near (Matthew 3:1-12). SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Be aware of the difference between accidental and suspicious bruises Many children play hard, and can suffer bruises or injuries as a result. With some injuries, it s hard to tell whether they are a result of too much roughhousing or abusive treatment. Follow this guideline to assess a child s bruising. Most accidental bruises are in common locations knees, elbows, and foreheads. In contrast, bruises on a child s neck or back could indicate potential mistreatment or abuse. Although kids should be allowed to explore and learn their limits, suspicious bruises are warning signs that should not be ignored.
