Anointing of the Sick Please feel free to call the parish office if you would like to have an Eucharistic home visit by one of our parish ministers of the sick. Communion for Sick and Homebound Parishioners Please call the parish offices if you would like to receive Communion we will make the arrangements with the Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick. If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One Please call the parish offices. If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, our Bereavement Ministers will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors and offer you helpful guidelines that will aid in the Liturgical planning of the Mass or Memorial Service. We know that this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is there for you.

We speak of the family of nations, of our church and parish families. The greatest compliment we can pay a friend or gracious host is to say that we feel at home with them, we feel part of the family. Families are the first crucibles in which love is tested and tempered. Jesus himself was one of three people who lived in the shadow of each other. This family, like our own, did not always get it right, but they always tried to. These three amateurs were on holiday, and one of them got lost. Two were worried sick and took great measures to find the third, a boy after all, who was seeking the meaning of his calling. 5 HOLY REDEEMER AND ST. JAMES CATHOLIC COMMUNITY The Holy Redeemer Elevator Project Update By Tim Lewis Are you wondering why the Elevator Project is moving along rather slowly? If so, you are not alone! We continue to have our share of the inevitable construction delays. As of this writing, our main problem is electricity. Our elevator needs three-phase power and Southern California Edison tells us, among other things, that this requires the installation of a new power pole. The problem is that Edison is running way behind because of the boom in area construction projects that require some form of electricity. Our project is in their installation que and has been for some time. We are hoping to have power later this month. This is also holding up our hardscape work (concrete flooring, curbs, etc.) because of the need to avoid surprises regarding underground conduit location requirements. So, we all wait with great expectation and the hope that final construction will begin to move along soon. After we obtain power and the hardscape is finished, the Otis Elevator Company will arrive to do their part. Our new elevator will be their Hydro Fit model with features that include a new type of hydraulics and all LED lighting. The elevator will be office building size with a cab width of 6 5, a depth of 5 6 and a height of 7 9. Fortunately, the elevator building is essentially complete. You may have noticed the unusual trellis roofing. This product is called Polygal translucent double layer waterproof acrylic which lets in light without glare and insulates from heat especially nice for either hot or rainy days! Added to the list of recent surprises, we have learned that a more elaborate than expected elevator fire alarm system will be required by the State of California. Work on this upgrade is proceeding concurrent with all other construction. Fr. Ed and all of us working on this project had fervently hoped that our elevator would be working by Christmas but alas, it is not to be. What can be said is that at some point there will be a very helpful and magnificent elevator! Once again, our parish is exceedingly grateful to the blessed memory of our late parishioner (and Msgr. John Foley Legacy Society member) Loretta Faye Gordon for making all this possible with her generous legacy gift. If the Lord allows her to see what s happening down here, we feel certain she is cheering us on, delays and all! December 19, 2018

7 HOLY REDEEMER AND ST. JAMES CATHOLIC COMMUNITY SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Did you know? Keep an eye on those Christmas candles. Twelve percent of home fires caused by candles will occur in December the combination of increased candle use and flammable decorations isn t a good one, especially if candles aren t used safely. Never leave candles burning in a room you are not in, or while you re sleeping. Clear the area before lighting a candle, making sure that the flame will be contained, that there s nothing flammable nearby, and that the candle is safely our of reach for children. If you have plans for a fire in your fireplace, check your chimney to make sure it s clean. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today s feast is new as feasts go, and it sets us this year in a very modern crisis. Amid conflicting schedules and commitments, a young man, testing the limits, has strayed from his parents and gone off to the big city. Mary and Joseph search frantically, only to find the child Jesus in the temple, conversing with the elders and scholars of the law, who are amazed at his wisdom. In the time of Jesus, the temple was the religious center of Jewish ritual. Outside of Jerusalem, people gathered in the synagogues, centers of learning, for daily prayer and study. Still, everyone longed to journey to the temple to participate in the offerings, and to fulfill certain obligations of the law that could only be done there. On this feast, we catch a glimpse of the family of Jesus: parents dealing with the normal stresses of raising a child, and yet completely grounded in the ways of faith and tradition. There has always been an appreciation in Christianity for the value of pilgrimage the journey to holy places that is a symbol of our life s journey to God, and a sense of connection to important events in our family history. During the Christmas season, many of us undertake pilgrimages to the family homestead for festival meals, to the parishes where we were formed in the faith, or perhaps even to a beautiful manger scene or festival of lights. There are few better days than this in our calendar for spending time with the family, especially on a short pilgrimage to a favorite place. Just make sure that no one gets left behind!
