Saturday Vigil Mass 4:00 PM at Holy Redeemer Sunday Masses 8:30 AM at St. James 10:00 AM at Holy Redeemer 11:30 AM at St. James 5:30 PM at Holy Redeemer Daily Masses Monday, Wednesday, Friday 8:00 AM at Holy Redeemer Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday 8:00 AM at St. James We Are Loved By God! HAPPY EASTER! Dear friends in Christ, this is the Easter message: we are loved by God! God has loved us and sent His Son to save us from our sins so that we might live with Him forever! Sin leads to Death, Jesus leads to Eternal Life. Rejoice in the saving act of God - Jesus Christ is Risen! This is why the Catholic Church exists, to proclaim Jesus -God s love made flesh, crucified and raised from the dead. And so, we at Holy Redeemer/St. James commit to welcoming you, loving you and serving you. We will Share Faith, Celebrate Traditions, and Serve Each Other to the Praise and Glory of God; this is why we exist! To those who have come home (in every sense of that phrase) welcome; we your parish family would be filled with joy to make you part of our community beyond today (join us at the table of God s Word and Sacrament, join us at Mass). We want to know you (please ask the greeters how you can register). We want to serve you (please let us know your needs). We want you to be included in our many good works (ask how you might volunteer). You are loved and wanted! To those who are seeking something deeper and more profound in your relationship with God, welcome. We invite you to pray with us, especially to join in Adoration - a quiet hour in the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist - every Wednesday, 8pm to 9pm at St. James. Until your relationship with Jesus is solid, none of what we do will make sense. All of the Catholic Church s teachings and practices are built on a personal relationship with Jesus - then His Church makes sense and makes sense of our lives. I encourage you to consider journeying with us in our Discovering Christ program which begins this Fall. Perhaps you would benefit accompanying other Adults seeking faith in our RCIA process (it s good for Catholics too!). Perhaps you need to talk things out, consider making an appointment with myself or another priest or minister here at your parish. What I m trying to say is that we want to help you grow in your relationship with God. To belong to Jesus Christ and the community of Disciples He founded is strength and grace for our journey home to Heaven. We are here: to love, to serve and to celebrate what God has done for us in Christ Jesus His Son! On behalf of all who minister at Holy Redeemer/St. James I wish you a Holy Easter and Easter Peace! Sharing Faith, Celebrating Traditions, and Serving Each Other to the Praise and Glory of God. Fr. Ed
3 B ible Study Adult Bible Study: Monday, 10AM, at Holy Redeemer s Healy Hall conference room. Adult Bible Study: Tuesday, 9AM, at the St. James Parish Center. Teen Bible Study: Tuesday, 6:30 PM, at the St. James Parish Center. Seeking Easter Sunday is a day all about seeking. The early Christian communities gathered around the Apostles, seeking more about the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus. Saint Paul told the baptized Colossians to seek what is above. Mary of Magdala went to the tomb, seeking to find the Lord s body so that she could anoint it. We come to church on Easter Sunday seeking many things. For some of us, this is a once a year journey, when we seek connection with the foundations of the Christian faith. For others, this day is the culmination of a long journey of Lenten repentance. For the newly baptized, this is the first day of a new life filled with promise and expectation. Whatever it is that we seek, let us be inspired by the disciple whom Jesus loved who, when he saw the wrappings of cloth inside the empty tomb, saw and believed. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Children s Liturgy of the Word This ministry provides appropriate scripture readings and reflections for our young minds during the 8:30 AM Mass at St James. The priest dismisses the children before the Connect With Your Faith lectors begin the readings and they return after the prayer of the faithful. TV Mass for the Homebound Sunday TV Mass is available for those homebound at 9:00 AM on KDOC-TV, Channel 56 or Charter 165. Check your TV listings for cable/satellite channels. Note: TV Mass does not meet the Sunday Mass obligation for the faithful who are able to attend in person. God s Word Today Our Lenten journey of conversion today reaches the holy city of Jerusalem. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Throughout Lent we have been journeying with the Lord to Jerusalem. Today he enters the holy city amid cries of joy and gladness. Those cries of joy turn quickly to cries of pain and anguish, which culminate in the words of abandonment that Jesus utters from the cross. Imagine the despair the Lord experienced when he felt abandoned by all, especially his own Father. As we prepare to listen to God s word, let us remember the pain and anguish that the Lord Jesus suffered on our behalf. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright J. S. Paluch Company Today s Readings First Reading Peter is an eyewitness: The Lord is risen (Acts 10:34a, 37-43). Psalm This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad (Psalm 118). Call the Parish Office. Anointing of the Sick Hospitals no longer inform churches when parishioners are admitted. Anointing of the Sick is offered to those who may be facing surgery, be seriously ill or dying. If you or someone you know wishes to be anointed, call the Parish Office to arrange for a visit from a priest. You may be anointed multiple times. Treasures From Our Traditions Our tradition has a way of honoring age-old customs, and is patient with how practices unfold in different places. The name of today s feast illustrates this well. English is a Germanic language, and our word Easter, or German Oester, points back to the pagan goddess Eoestre, the star of the vernal equinox feast. The Greek title Pasch reaches back in a more helpful manner to the Hebrew Pesach, or Passover. Paschal Triduum may be slow to replace Easter in our vocabulary, but it is clearer about the mystery we celebrate today, the culmination of three days laden with mystery and meaning. You can hear the older term, and the resistance to English influence, in the Irish Casca and Scottish Pask. Romance languages stay close to the deep paschal tradition, with the French Pâques, Spanish Pascua and Italian Pasqua. Memories of our pagan past with Oester will not soon fade away: even Japanese Christians are under her spell, for today s feast is called I-suta. Swahili, a young language, takes the more traditional route with Pasaka. Each language yields a rich insight into the feast. Spanish includes a sense that today is a big Sunday by adding the designation Pascua to the greatest feasts, such as Pascua de la Natividad (Christmas). Once Christ is risen, every step of life s journey is illuminated by the light of the Pasch! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
