1 OUR MISSION: Sharing Faith, Celebrating Traditions, and Serving Each Other to the Praise and Glory of God. October 8, 2017 The Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Prayer for The Sick, Elderly and Dying O God, source of all life and hope, look kindly on our brothers and sisters facing the end of their lives, fill them with the hope of your mercy and give them peace and comfort. We pray for our citizens to choose life and fight against assisted suicide. Lord, move our hearts to work for life and for the protection of the elderly, the sick, and the disabled. Renew our commitment to building a community where every human life is welcomed and wanted, valued and defended, from conception to natural death. We ask this through the intercession of Saint John Paul II. Amen. 4 WORSHIP AND SHARING TRADITIONS Environment Ministry Volunteer Opportunities This ministry has the pleasure of decorating and adorning both churches (inside and outside) for all of the special Liturgies throughout the Church Calendar Year. This is our busy season coming up with All Souls Requiem Mass, Advent and Christmas; in 2018, our busy time will be Lent, Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. These are just the big ones! With two churches to adorn in a very short time span, it is critical that we have a staff of volunteers who will commit to helping. These opportunities are: Seamstress Love to sew? This is the ministry for you. We need to have new covers made for some of the statues; some current coverings are in need of repair as well as various items used in the celebration of the Mass. You will be supplied with the necessary fabrics for new projects you just need a sewing machine and some free time. Handyman We have several wooden items that are in need of an uplift. Assist in setting up the Christmas and Easter scenes as well as assisting in the hanging of banners and other decorations. Two-Day Assistance is especially needed, at both churches, before and after Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter week. St James requires the taking down and putting up of the Crucifix as it is changed out depending upon the Liturgy; assembly of several very large Christmas trees and lots more. Creative Assistance is needed in setting up and placing of flowers and other decorations. If you would like to learn how to make bows, we can teach you! Stay tuned for more on this! Join us in this fun, beautiful and fulfilling ministry! Don t be haunted by not making a difference Questions: Brian Brady, event organizer, Diocese of Beaumont Beaumont, Texas Dear Fr. Ed, You and your parishioners at Holy Redeemer-St James are a great blessing during these challenging days. Your generous donation will be used for recovery efforts following Hurricane/Tropical Storm Harvey. Harvey hit us hard leaving behind great devastation as will as psychological and physical suffering. Floodwaters have affected tens of thousands in our community. Many lost their homes and belongings. People were often trapped on rooftops awaiting rescue. Nineteen of our parishes and three schools were affected by the rains. In the diocese, the most severe flooding was at our Holy Family Retreat Center where water nearly reached the tops of buildings. But, all through the storm and during the days that followed, we experienced the Light of Christ shining through the darkness as strangers helped and consoled strangers. And, we all have grown close in the Body of Christ. The journey to recovery will be long and costly, But, with your assistance it will be filled with hope. You have expressed a great act of kindness by helping those in dire need remind us of St. Paul s words. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have; God is pleased by sacrifices of that kind. - Heb 13:16 Please pass on my gratitude to your parishioners for being in solidarity with us. You are in my every prayer. Sincerely in Christ, Most Rev. Curtis J. Guillory, S.V.D., D.D. Bishop of Beaumont
