1 Holy Redeemer Church & Office 2411 Montrose Ave. Montrose, CA (818) St James the Less Church 4625 Dunsmore Ave. La Crescenta, CA St. James the Less Office 4651 Dunsmore Ave. La Crescenta, CA (818) God s Word Today Have you ever waited for something for a very long time? The Scripture readings for this feast of the Holy Family focus our attention on four elderly people: Abraham, our father in faith, his wife Sarah, Simeon, and the prophetess Anna. Abraham and Sarah trusted in the word of God, even though what was promised seemed absolutely impossible a child, even though each was past the age of generating and giving birth to a child. They waited for many years for an offspring. Isaac, their son, was the fulfillment of God s promise to them. Simeon and Anna were two older people who were in the temple almost constantly. They, too, waited for the fulfillment of a promise. They awaited the arrival of Christ the Lord. Today we hear what happens when Joseph and Mary bring the child Jesus to the temple to consecrate him to the Lord. Advent was the time during which we waited for the coming of the Lord. Like Abraham, Sarah, Simeon, and Anna, let us welcome the fulfilled promise of God let us welcome the Lord Jesus present in the word proclaimed this day. Readings for the Week Monday: 1 Jn 2:3-11; Ps 96:1-3, 5b-6; Lk 2:22-35 Tuesday: 1 Jn 2:12-17; Ps 96:7-10; Lk 2:36-40 Wednesday: 1 Jn 2:18-21; Ps 96:1-2, 11-13; Jn 1:1-18 Thursday: Nm 6:22-27; Ps 67:2-3, 5, 6, 8; Gal 4:4-7; Lk 2:16-21 Friday: 1 Jn 2:22-28; Ps 98:1-4; Jn 1:19-28 Saturday: 1 Jn 2:29 3:6; Ps 98:1, 3cd-6; Jn 1:29-34 Sunday: Is 60:1-6; Ps 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-13; Eph 3:2-3a, 5-6; Mt 2:1-12 Connect With Your Faith We Are God s Holy Family The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren couples who were miraculously granted the gift of children by God. Surely the best known among these is the first reading from today, from which Luke took inspiration when he recounted the miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth, and the more miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph. In each instance, we are given examples or role models of those who trusted in God. More than examples of those who trust, they are models of selfsurrender. They abandoned their own presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of the world and turned their lives over to belief in a God who can make life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn death around into a new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a tiny child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him into a light for all the world. This is what we, as God s holy family, are called to do each day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we think things should be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God of endless promise. Santo Nino Grand Celebration All devotees of the Holy Child are invited to attend Mass in honor of the Holy Infant Jesus ~ Santo Nino at the Historic Faith Center of the San Pedro Region (SS. Peter and Paul Church) at 1015 Lagoon Ave, Wilmington, on Saturday Jan 17, at 10 AM. Bishop Joseph Sartoris will be the main celebrant. There will be a Grand Procession immediately following the Mass featuring the Holy Infant of Prague carroza and anda for the Santo Niño de Atocha. Children dressed as Santo Nino from different parts of the world will also join the caravan. Complimentary lunch at Sullivan Hall will be offered after the Procession and Mass. Questions? Contact Mr. Jun Hingco at ext 23 or the church at sppc@sbcglobal.net Morning Star Morning Star refers to the last star near the eastern horizon that is visible to the naked eye before the sun rises and the star becomes invisible (usually the morning star is Venus which, of course, is not a start by a planet.) The title Morning Star is given to Mary. She is symbolically the last star visible in the sky before Jesus, the Light of the World, enters the human race. One of the morning prayers familiar to Catholics of the past several generations (and often pasted on bathroom mirrors) is the morning offering: O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart, in union with the holy sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, for the intentions of all our associates, and in particular for the intention recommended this month by the Holy Father. - from The Little Blue Book: Advent and Christmas Seasons

Treasures From Our Traditions In the last century, a few new feasts were blended into the Church year, including today s. After World War I, the chaos of daily life in Europe made its impact felt on the family structure. Partly to offer Christians an image of hope and holiness in married family life, and also to promote the welfare of children, today s feast was invented in In 1969, it became a feast of Christmas. The prayers today remind us not only of family life, but of life in the community of faith. We ponder the mystery of a God who loves us dearly enough to embrace the struggles, joys, and daily sorrows of family life. The message of Christmas shines through: God-with-us is available to us in the ordinary patterns of our lives and commitments. The lives of people who raise their children in difficult circumstances, and of people who remain faithful to life in the Church in spite of some of their own family struggles, occupy a special place in our hearts today in prayer. 6 D id You Know? Shopping mall safety tips It s easy for kids to get sidetracked with all the sights, sounds, and smells surrounding us at holiday time. It is especially important to monitor your children when taking them through the mall during the Christmas season. If children become separated from you, teach them to look for a safe stranger who can help them. For example, a mom with kids or the cash register person can help a child who is lost. Avoid telling children to go to the manager. Any adult in a suit, who looks important, can look like the manager to a child. Children must be told never to leave the mall or store to go looking for you in the parking lot. Let them know that you would never go outside or leave until you are reunited -- no matter what anyone else tells them. Bulletin Material Please submit information via to bulletin.editor@hr-sj.org.
