1 Our Mission: Sharing Faith, Celebrating Traditions, and Serving Each Other to the Praise and Glory of God GOD S WORD TODAY Picking up on themes begun in last week s readings, today s scriptures focus our attention on how we use the gifts God gives us. The letter of Saint James is a stark condemnation of the misuse of wealth: You have lived on earth in luxury and pleasure; you have fattened your hearts for the day of slaughter. The people he describes are those who withheld wages, thereby causing others to become poor. Jesus tells us that we should cut off whatever it is that causes us to sin. These readings make these autumn weeks a time for deep self-searching. What are the things that fatten our hearts? How do we use the gifts God gives? Are we dedicating a portion of our salaries to the work of the Church and charitable groups? Are we on the road to becoming good stewards of God s creation? Would that the Lord might bestow his spirit on them all. Numbers 11:29 Today's liturgy is full of strong imagery, hard words, and challenging exhorta on, yet it also offers comfort and encouragement. Denuncia on rings most strongly in the Le er of Saint James as he lambastes the rich for their ill-go en wealth amassed by withholding the wages of workers while simultaneously reminding them that their riches have no las ng value. Jesus seems to demand something harsher: We should "cut off" anything that causes us to sin. Jesuit Father Walter Burghardt ( ) reminds us in his homilies of the Semi c style of exaggera on that Jesus employs; at the same me, we can't let ourselves off the hook easily. There's much in our lives that keeps us from God. The liturgy's prayers, on the other hand, refresh us with God's mercy. Inspired by our confidence, we pray that God will help us to become "heirs to the treasures of heaven" (Collect). Today's liturgy is a mixed bag, indeed, yet it offers a marvelous balance between our own duty to seek the kingdom and the ul mate power of God to overcome our failings. The Second Reading from James fairly demands that we li up to God the needs of the working poor and those who suffer the injus ces of our economic systems, as well as embrace the prophe c ministry we received in bap sm on their behalf. Then we may fulfill Moses' wish: "Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets!" Anointing of the Sick Please notify the parish office as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lord s special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere, and as often as once a month. If someone should die without anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient and the Lord cares! If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One Please call the parish offices. If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, our Bereavement Ministers will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors and offer you helpful guidelines that will aid in the Liturgical planning of the Mass or Memorial Service. 6 Sacraments Sacrament of Baptism St. James and Holy Redeemer parishes welcome all! Baptisms are held on the First Sunday during the 10 am Mass at HR Third Sunday during the 11:30 am Mass at SJ Baptism Prep (group session): First Saturday of month Please call the Parish Office at (818) Sacrament of First Communion Preparation for children who have attained the age of reason (usually during 2nd grade) is arranged either through the Office of Religious Education or the parish school. This is a two-year program. Sacrament of Confirmation A two-year program for freshman/sophomore-age teens. Apply through the Life Teen office. Sacrament of Matrimony Please contact the Parish Office upon engagement; at least six months is needed for preparation of this joyous sacrament! ARE YOU SOMEONE OR DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic? Has a child over the age of seven who has not been baptized? Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist? Our RCIA program is an opportunity for adults to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. Classes began on Tuesday Sept. 15 at 7pm and will continue at the time. You are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. The mission of the prayer group is: Trust, Love and Mercy are the essence of the Divine Mercy Devotion. FACTS ABOUT FATHER SERRA Did you know that Fray Junípero had a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary? At the age of 36 he arrived in Vera Cruz and traveled by foot to Mexico City to dedicate his mission vocation at the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe; there he asked her for the grace to open the hearts of the colonizers and indigenous peoples. The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is venerated in most of the missions. Since then, Our Lady of Guadalupe has become, in fact, the Patroness of the whole American continent. SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Back to school: keep communicating School starting may make it harder to have family time, but it is important to keep the lines of communication open during the rush of sports, activities and schoolwork. Ask your kids about their day who they talked to and what they did. Your kids should know there s nothing too embarrassing or scary to share with you. One easy way to start a conversation with your child is by talking to them in the car they can be brief, private and sometimes avoiding eye contact can help kids open up.
