3 B ible Study Adult Bible Study: Monday, 10AM, at Holy Redeemer s Healy Hall conference room. Adult Bible Study: Tuesday, 9AM, at the St. James Parish Center. Teen Bible Study: Tuesday, 6:30 PM, at the St. James Parish Center. The New Covenant When the prophet Jeremiah coined the term new covenant he was actually doing something quite radical. For the Jewish people, there was only one covenant, the one made between the Lord God and Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai. For Jeremiah to suggest that God would somehow supersede the covenant with a new one would have sounded audacious to Jewish ears. But in this way he is a predecessor of Jesus who, in the Gospel of John, is continually portrayed as superseding the past, establishing the reign of God in a new way. And in today s Gospel passage, Jesus the new covenant speaks the language of his new commandment of love when he tells of the dying grain of wheat, and of our own need to die to self in order to be raised with Christ. As Lent ends and we prepare to enter into Holy Week, the dying grain of wheat serves as an excellent symbol of the kind of dying and self sacrifice to which disciples are called, a symbol of that new covenant written deep within our hearts Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Connect With Your Faith Children s Liturgy of the Word This ministry provides appropriate scripture readings and reflections for our young minds during the 8:30 AM Mass at St James. The priest dismisses the children before the lectors begin the readings and they return after the prayer of the faithful. TV Mass for the Homebound Sunday TV Mass is available for those homebound at 9:00 AM on KDOC-TV, Channel 56 or Charter 165. Check your TV listings for cable/satellite channels. Note: TV Mass does not meet the Sunday Mass obligation for the faithful who are able to attend in person. God s Word Today Such rich fare is offered to us this day from the table of God s word. The first reading chronicles both the punishment and the great mercy shown by God to the people who added infidelity to infidelity. Saint Paul calls this God one who is rich in mercy. The greatest merciful act shown by our God is beautifully proclaimed in today s Gospel: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son. As the word of God is proclaimed today, let us be thankful to God for the gift of the Lord Jesus, who came into this world not to condemn, but to save. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright J. Treasures From Our Traditions As we approach Holy Week, the creative juices of the ancient church of Jerusalem begin to shape our journey. In old Jerusalem at this season of the year, the attempt was made to recall the events leading up to Christ s passion. Those attempts were based not only on time, with celebrations of events as close to the day and hour as possible, but also on people s best guesses as to the actual place of these events. Vast numbers of pilgrims flooded the city during the forty days of Lent, many of them catechumens in their last stages of preparation for initiation. The fourth-century Spanish nun Egeria wrote a delightfully detailed diary of her experience of this lively and aerobic liturgy, which involved hearty singing, strong preaching, and nimble processions across vast and arduous terrain. Much of this energy was lost over the centuries, with the procession of palms a noteworthy exception. Northern climates had to reinterpret this Jerusalem liturgy, using forsythia, willow, or olive branches, but to this day the entry into Holy Week by a community on the move accompanied by joyful song hearkens back to a venerable tradition. Egeria s letters were rediscovered a little more than a hundred years ago, but they reveal a pattern of prayer: full, conscious, active participation, to which we have a right and a duty. Rev. 6 S afeguard the Children Did You Know? Tips to help protect children from sexting Before buying your child a cell phone, set rules for its use, including what sort of information and images are appropriate to share via text. Know what safeguards are available on your child s phone, such as turning off and/or blocking texting and picture features. Talk to your child about the possible social, academic, and legal consequences of sexting. They could face humiliation, lose educational opportunities, and get in trouble with the law. Encourage your child to not be a bystander or an instigator. If he or she receives a sext, discuss why it is important that he or she not forward the image to anyone else. Remind your child that they can talk to you if they receive a nude picture on their cell phone. Report any nude or semi-nude images that your child receives to law enforcement or contact Bulletin Deadline Please submit bulletin information via to bulletin.editor@hrsj.org. Deadline is Friday by 10AM for the following weekend bulletin. For holiday weekends, the deadline is Thursday by 10AM. Deadline for Easter Sunday, April 5, Bulletin is March 24.
