Catholic Leadership Institute Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 28, 2015 She said, If I but touch His clothes I shall be cured. Mark 5:28 THE LORD OF LIFE At this bountiful time of year, our Sunday readings teem with life and abundance. Both the first reading, from the book of Wisdom, and the Gospel passage from Mark assure us that God did not make death or even will us to be ill. Illness and death entered the world through the presence of evil, the Wisdom author tells us. Mark s stories of Jesus healing a hemorrhaging woman and resuscitating a dead little girl make it clear that Jesus is from God. As the Son of God he does not will that anyone suffer illness or death. In the face of such power, the second reading, from Paul s Second Letter to the Corinthians, provides a stark contrast. Jesus, who could raise the dead to new life, though he was rich, for your sake he became poor (2 Corinthians 8:9). Our gift of new life from Christ demands our response in charity. Copyright J. S. Anointing of the Sick Please notify the parish office as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lord s special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere, and as often as once a month. If someone should die without anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient and the Lord cares! If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One Please call the parish offices. If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, our Bereavement Ministers will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors and offer you helpful guidelines that will aid in the Liturgical planning of the Mass or Memorial Service. We know that this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is there for you. Bereavement Ministry If you are interested in volunteering, or if a loved one has been called home by God, the Bereavement Ministry is available to provide compassionate support in planning either the Rite of Christian Burial or a Memorial Liturgy to honor a deceased loved one. The Divine Mercy Prayer Group The Divine Mercy Prayer Group meets on Wednesday mornings (9:30 am) at St James Church, for approximately one hour to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Divine Mercy prayers, and the Praises of the Divine Mercy. JAMES BOOK CLUB Our discussion on July 3 will be about the novel by Natalie Baszile, Queen Sugar. The story is set in Louisiana. A young mother leaves Los Angeles to take up farming. Her teenage daughter disapproves. The odds are against her. She's in a position like that of Sally Fields' character in the movie, "Places in the Heart." We meet for about an hour on the first Friday of each month at seven o'clock in the rectory at Holy Redeemer. Participants are not just from Holy Redeemer. Everyone is welcome. Come suggest a good book, launch a comment, give your appreciation (or condemnation). TV Mass for the Homebound Sunday TV Mass is available for those homebound at 9:00 AM on KDOC-TV, Channel 56 or Charter 165. Check your TV listings for cable/satellite channels. Children s Liturgy of the Word This ministry provides appropriate scripture readings and reflections for our young minds during the 8:30 AM Mass at St James. The priest dismisses the children before the lectors begin the readings and they return after the prayer of the faithful. DID YOU KNOW? Safeguard the Children By teaching total body safety we further efforts to stop abuse Parents and caregivers should stress that a child s entire body is private and be watchful of adults who might be grooming a child by constantly tickling, kissing, or hugging them. A child will often tell a parent he or she does not want to hug or kiss someone and parents should listen and respect their wishes. By teaching total body safety to adults, children, and young people, we are furthering our efforts to stop abuse and to make the world a safer place for all of God s children.
