2 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS It s interesting to imagine the scene when the changes in our liturgy were first tested. Choices for prayer texts were one thing, but responses from the people were another. In early 1967, secret test-drives of the new Mass were conducted in the Vatican. Pope Paul VI was present, and there was a handful of bishops, priests, a few laypeople and two sisters making up the assembly. Everyone had a booklet with every word of the songs, rubrics, and prayers, blank paper, and a pencil for notes. After each Mass, the ordained men in the group met in the pope s library to share their experiences. The laypeople and sisters met separately. Over a week s time they tested what they called a read Mass with singing, a Mass entirely recited, and a Sung Mass. While the ordained were generally in favor, the lay comments were very clear and insightful, and had great impact on the final result. This was a brilliant plan on the part of the pope, who got to see how the reform was going, and to recognize in this small trial run a growing consensus that reform was needed and welcome. Based on his observation, Pope Paul VI called for specific innovations, such as beginning the Mass with the sign of the cross. It s amazing that some of our most familiar rites are really quite new treasures of our tradition! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co WHY DO WE DO THAT? Catholic Traditions Explained Why do Catholics Use Crucifixes? Crucifixes, like statues and stained glass windows, are used by the Catholic Church to help tell the story of Jesus. Catholic churches use crucifixes instead of empty crosses because it helps bring the message home in a deeper way and because the cross is meaningless without Christ s death on it. Catholics do realize, of course, that Christ didn t stay there. The Catholic church requires a crucifix to be visible during Mass. You can also find them in Catholic homes, hospitals and schools, for example. Prayer for Labor Day On this weekend, when we rest from our usual labors, loving Father, we pray for all who shoulder the tasks of human labor in the marketplace, in factories and offices, in the professions, and in family living. We thank you, Lord, for the gi and opportunity of work; may our efforts always be pure of heart, for the good of others and the glory of your name. We li up to you all who long for just employment and those who work to defend the rights and needs of workers everywhere. May those of us who are now re red always remember that we s ll make a valuable contribu on to our Church and our world by our prayers and deeds of charity. May our working and our res ng all give praise to you un l the day we share together in eternal rest with all our departed in your Kingdom as you live and reign Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. 3 SACRAMENTS & WORSHIP SACRAMENTS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH Sacrament of Baptism Baptisms are held on the First Sunday during the 10am Mass at HR Third Sunday during the11:30am Mass at SJ Please call the parish office for further information. Sacrament of First Communion Preparation for children who have attained the age of reason (usually during 2nd grade) is arranged either through the Office of Religious Education or the parish school. This is a two-year program. Sacrament of Confirmation A two-year program for high school teens. Apply through the Life Teen office: hrsjlifeteen@gmail.com Sacrament of Matrimony Please contact the Parish Office upon engagement; at least six months is needed for preparation of this joyous sacrament! Holy Orders/Religious Orders Anyone interested in a religious life as a priest, deacon, or sister please contact Father Ed: fred@hr-sjcatholic.org. Anointing of the Sick Please notify the parish office as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lord s special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere, and as often as once a month. Page, and Holy Souls Please continue to lift each other up in prayer. CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD Join us for Children s Liturgy of the Word (CLW). CLW is an age-appropriate Liturgy of the Word offered for ages 5 through 3rd grade at the 8:30am Mass. No pre-registration is necessary. All children are welcome and encouraged to attend. Just before the Liturgy of the Word begins for the assembly, these children are invited to go with the volunteer catechist to the Church Sacristy, located behind the altar at St James. During this special time, the volunteer teacher leads the children through prayers, songs and readings that are simplified for children.

There are far too many people who think that taking a picture while driving, or standing out on a ledge, is more important than their own safety, and that getting likes on a photo makes the risks worth it. Talk to your kids about safety, smart choices, and being aware of their environment and surroundings, even when they re using their smartphones. It is an 8 9 week group which meets each week to provide support and help with finding new ways to cope with the loss. The theme of the Conference is "The Divine Mercy and Fatima Message Urging Us to Action ". Two well known priests of the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception, from Stockbridge, MA, will be the Featured Speakers. Bishop Joseph Brennan of the San Fernando Region will be presiding during the Closing Vigil Mass.
