Saying Goodbye After over 14 years in Carnmoney, and many changes, last year, as you know, brought the biggest change of all to my life, and that brought further upheaval in its wake. Colm and I were very touched and blessed by all the excitement and good wishes from the parish that followed our engagement in May and wedding in September. I can t adequately thank you all for the love and support you have shown through all of that, and that made it especially hard to have to tell you a few months later of my resignation from full time ministry and our move to Bangor. We had never thought we would be able to find and purchase a house so quickly, but though events have moved fast, we have no doubt this is a necessary and right move for us. The pace of parish life is relentless, and I know I need to step back from carrying the entire responsibility for leadership in order to give time to this new stage in life for us. Even in my last full week in the parish for example, three funerals were held in the church, with Carol taking one and myself the other two. I had hoped to have some space that week to call on a number of folk who cannot now get to church to say my farewells to them, but the need to visit the bereaved, prepare the funerals, put together items for the magazine and prepare for Sunday, made that impossible. I will still hope to do some of that visiting in the last week in January, but in this role, your planning can suddenly have to be put aside to deal with whatever comes. It is the nature of the calling, and it is one of the great privileges that we have in caring for God s people. But it doesn t make for an easy or stress-free life. But though I know this move is good and exciting for us, that does not mean that it will be easy to leave this parish or that I will stop caring for the people within it. I know that Carol and others will keep me in touch with how things are going for you all, and my thoughts and prayers will be often with you in the days and weeks to come. I am sure that this is a right time for a new person to bring new energy and vision into Carnmoney Parish, and I will be praying with you for the nominators as they exercise their responsibilities in the selection of your next Vicar. Change is unsettling, I know, but our God is unchanging and his guidance and presence is always with us. He has more blessings in store for all of us, and I know the warmth of fellowship and care in the parish will bring you rejoicing to the next stage of this church s story. As I say goodbye therefore, with a mixture of sorrow and anticipation for all that lies ahead for all of us, may I thank you all again for your love and support, not just through the last year, but through some very tough times in previous years. February this year brings us quickly into Lent and the journey towards Holy Week and Easter. It can be a tough time, but it always holds before us the Easter hope and the story of transformation and grace. May that be our story also, as we continue in different places on the journey of faith, for we are all held by the same God whose love will never let us go. In the meantime, I will sign off with part of a prayer from a liturgy from the Church of England for parting. I think it expresses very well all we might hope for each other. We praise and thank you, God of the journey for our life together and apart. As we entrust ourselves into your loving care, knowing that you are always the faithful companion on the Way, grant us the courage to meet the future and the grace to let go into new life. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. With every blessing, 4 Pray for the Following Families in February 4th Feb - Bell, Brown (Pembroke C), Cairncross, Cairns, Cameron, Chick. 11th Feb - Brown (C money R), Campbell, Carleton, Carlisle, Carson, Cassells, Caughey. 18th Feb - Brown (Queens A), Cherry, Clarke, Cleland, Close, Conlane, Conn (B clare), Cooke. 25th Feb - Brown (Braemar C), Conn (Osterley P), Connolly (Swanston C), Corry, Coulter, Courtney.

24th January 25th January 26th January Parish Register Christian Burial I am the Resurrection and the Life says the Lord Isabel Evans, Beverley Lodge Nursing Home, Newtownards Eleanor Grainger, Rogan Manor, Newtownabbey Brian Hough, Dunanney Nursing Home In Memoriam Isabel Evans - The funeral of Stanley Cooke s much loved cousin, Isabel Evans, was held in our church towards the end of January. Though Isabel had long lived in Bangor, and in her latter days in Beverley Lodge Nursing Home in Newtownards, she and her family had a long connection with Carnmoney Parish, and it was appropriate to celebrate her remarkable life here. She and her sister Florence grew up originally on the Crumlin Road, and their first church was St Michael s on the Shankill through family connections there. But when Isabel was a young woman, they moved to Elmfield and were part of the parish for many years. Many will still remember her fondly, and from talking to Stanley, it is clear she was a woman of strong enthusiasms and blessed with an outgoing and cheerful personality. She had a very varied and active life for much of her 87 years, until illness took its toll in these last years. She worked initially in the Co-op in Belfast, running the office for one of the directors and becoming widely known for running the firm s fashion show for two weeks every year. She later went to Southampton University as a mature student and moved career into the Probation Service, becoming one of the most senior and respected Probation Officers in the Service. She even spent a year on exchange in a remote area of Canada with their Probation Service. In her retirement, she offered her services to CMS Ireland with which she had a long association and spent time in Egypt and became a very popular speaker for CMS Ireland with church groups such as the Mothers Union. She was a confident, energetic, outgoing woman who lived a full and active life, and she will, I know, be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. We offer Stanley and Joan, all the extended family and Isabel s many friends, our deepest sympathy and assurance of our prayers. Eleanor Grainger - Eleanor died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on 18th January A celebration of her life took place in church on 25th January, and afterwards at the Belfast Crematorium. Eleanor was a hard-working, fun-loving, very fit, good wife, mother and friend. A woman who did not lie down under her diagnosis, but fought on and loved on until the very end. Growing up in Millisle, Eleanor met the love of her life, Michael, when he came every year to Millisle on holiday. A holiday romance blossomed, and they were married in Donaghadee Parish Church on 12th August Eleanor trained as a hairdresser in Hair Traffic and opened her own salon in Millisle. In 1983 they moved to Church Crescent, where their long association with the Parish Church began. The marriage was blessed with three children, Leanne, Ashley and Darren, all of whom were active members in the CGB, CLB and Sunday School. Eleanor was never afraid of hard work, and she worked hard to ensure the family got their special holidays together - she loved the sun. She also loved Portrush - Portmagic - and a wonderful Christmas was enjoyed by all the family in December 2015, when they took a house together to celebrate a special time and make precious memories. In 2000, the family moved to Rogan Manor, known by everyone as the house with the flowers. Eleanor was not only house proud, but she loved her flowers, and her window boxes and hanging baskets were a local legend. Eleanor loved children, and she applied, and was accepted, as a registered child minder. She looked after her own grandchildren and her family s friends children too. She was a very loving, kind and generous woman, who will be sorely missed by her devoted family. We commend them all to your prayers. Brian Hough - Brian Hough passed away peacefully in January after a number of years of increasingly debilitating illness. He was the middle one of a family of three, but sadly, both his elder sister and younger brother pre-deceased him some time ago. He grew up in North Belfast, with Trevor Gibb as one of his oldest friends. His wife of nearly fifty years, Jane, was one of a family with continued on page 8 5

long connections to Carnmoney Parish Church, and Brian and Jane settled in this area from the start of their marriage, which took place in this church. Brian spent most of his working life as a food scientist in the Civil Service and clearly had a successful and happy career, but his family life with Jane and his daughter Margaret was always the central focus of his life. He also greatly enjoyed some deep and long-term friendships from his youth onwards and appreciated also the support of those friends and his wider family circle. Illness may have caused his activities to be curtailed in later years, but his mind remained sharp and his spirit strong. We offer our condolences to all who will mourn his passing and assure his family and friends of our prayers at this sad time. Mercia and Colm s Move We hope to arrange our move to Bangor for the middle of March as it will take some time to clear from the Glebe all the papers and furniture that will not be coming with us. That means that at least the house will be heated and kept occupied during the last of the winter. We will make our final payments of phone and electricity bills on the moving date but also will ensure that services for both are kept open by transferring them, as requested, into the name of our church treasurer until your new Vicar arrives. Our new address in Bangor will be 95 Silverbirch Road, Bangor, Co. Down BT19 6FA and until we set up a landline the best way to contact me after the move will be through my mobile number I will also be using the time in February to notify my new details of name and address to all the relevant authorities, so after the move to Bangor I will be fully using my married name. When we get settled and properly unpacked, I plan to set up an open day to welcome any of you who would like to pop down for some coffee and cake at any point in the day outside of meal times. That will probably be some time in May but I will forward details to Carol to put in the relevant magazine. Fellowship Group - February Please note that, due to an early Lent, there will be NO Fellowship Group at the start of February or March. Details of Lent meetings follow on page 9. Knitting B The knitting B is continuing to be enjoyed by all who go along. Why not give it a try and bring your craftwork, whatever it is. Relax, share and enjoy a hot cuppa. February Healing Services In order to facilitate the Lent course (see page 9), our normal mid-week Healing Service will NOT be held on Thursday 15th February at 8pm. There will however be an opportunity to share in the ministry of healing with the laying on of hands in February during our main morning service at 11am on Sunday 25th February. During the ministry of healing at this service, please feel free to come for prayer, either for your own needs or for those of others, for whom you can stand proxy. Pastoral Emergencies in the Vacancy Carol will continue to be involved in Sunday services, but she is, at present, providing palliative care to a friend at home, and as a result, she is not able to give so much time to pastoral care in the parish. If you have a pastoral emergency or request for hospital visit or funeral, please contact her on , and if she is unable to help you, she will pass your request to the Rural Dean, the Rev. David Lockhart, tel If you are unable to contact Carol, please contact the Rural Dean direct. Pastoral Care Team The next meeting of the Pastoral Care Team will be on Thursday 22nd February at 8pm. Due to the Vacancy, it will be held in the Memorial Room. 8

Lent 2018 Ash Wednesday this year falls very early on 14th February and will be marked with our usual service of Holy Communion for the start of Lent at 7pm. There will be three Lent meetings this year, and they will be held in the Memorial Room from pm, ending with refreshments, on some of the Thursday evenings through Lent as follows: Thursday 15th February - Penny prayers - This will replace our usual healing service Thursday 1st March - Prayers for our Land Thursday 15th March - Healing Prayers - This will replace our usual healing service It is intended that we look at the various prayer topics and devise some prayers for use at a future service. This will link in with the week of prayer planned before Pentecost. See details in the March Review. Bishop s Lenten Talks 2018 The Bishop of Connor, the Rt Rev. Alan Abernethy, will deliver his Lenten talk on the topic of God s Mission and the Church today. The talk in Jordanstown Parish Centre, takes place on Thursday 15th March at 7.30pm. Tales at Sea and Other Stories Chapter 2 - Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink You will already know that that isn t true the not a drop to drink bit! Yes, there was water as far as the eye could see and not another vessel in sight. Second day in, I took a sort of panic attack when I realised that I couldn t get off the ship, even if I wanted to. I couldn t dash about and do this and that; I had to relax, chill out. Yes I panicked! Luckily it didn t last long, and I soon got used to the wonderful lazy days and exciting evenings. When I say lazy days, that was a very deliberate choice. There was so much to do every day if you had wanted to. Let me list a few of the classes on offer; ballroom dancing, line dancing, bridge, fencing, pilates, spinning, yoga. There were putting contests, table-tennis contests, pub quizzes. There were lectures by a famous journalist, a photographer, an astronaut. There was a planetarium, and RADA did two afternoon sessions - a celebration of Shakespeare and The importance of being Ernest (we went to these) and they ran workshops throughout the continued on page 10 Carol raises a toast. Hello to New York 9

day. There was a sort of Knitting B ladies - where you were invited to a certain area of the ship to bring whatever craftwork you were working on. There was a library of course, a spa and two swimming pools and a gym. There was a bookshop, a jewellery shop, handbags, souvenirs and a chocolate shop, not to mention the various eateries and drinkeries! So how did we fill our seven days? Well, three times around the deck was a mile - we went round once on a few occasions! We purchased a spa pass which enabled us to go and use the steam rooms, saunas, whirlpool, jacuzzi, and lie around on relaxing beds reading or watching what was going on. We went to the pool on a few occasions and one day we even sat outside. We explored the shops (all very expensive) and the different restaurants. One afternoon, we availed of the splendid afternoon tea. White gloved waiters with trays of little delicate sandwiches, scones, cakes and mini deserts. Washed down with delicate teas, in fine china. The ambiance, well it was held in the grand ballroom and a classical quartet played while we enjoyed the scran, whoops, I mean delicacies. This happened every day if you were of a mind. A full silver service breakfast and lunch were also available daily, as well as the splendid evening dining. Julie and I stuck to the fabulous buffet breakfast and lunch, apart from the indulgent day when we had breakfast in bed! There was a full complimentary room service, if you were so inclined. In the evenings, after the sumptuous dining with lovely dinner companions from Australia, Canada and Newcastle, there was wonderful entertainment - the McDonald brothers, Scottish brothers who sang and played guitar, fiddle, piano, accordion, to name a few of their instruments. There was the fabulous lady flautist who danced and played - spinning a web like the Pied Piper. There was the American comedian/juggler - I thought that would be pushing it - he was fabulous! There were the evenings of show tunes and dancing with the wonderful orchestra and Cunard singers and dancers. The shows were not too long, 45 minutes, which held you spellbound. And after the theatre, was it to bed with a good book? Not at all, it was the little nightclub at the back of the formal ball room. Well, on two occasions anyway. Julie loves to dance, and so I got up with her for a boogie. After a while she left the floor. Why? Apparently I was dancing like a mad woman! There were two theme nights - a black and white ball and a roaring 30 s night (see the photo on page 9)! There was entertainment in the English pub every evening. A duo, husband guitarist and wife singer, the only problem being it was impossible to get a seat, although we would have sat on the floor for their Eagles and Clearwater Revival night. The days and nights passed so quickly and enjoyably. Day five, the Captain announced in his noonday transmission, At eight o clock this evening, we will be passing the place where the Titanic went down. Looking at the chart on the in-house television broadcast, it was so close to land, so hard to believe, such a terrible tragedy. The big event for me was getting closer. The sailing into New York Harbour, under the Brooklyn Bridge and past the Statue of Liberty. Oh, I forgot to mention, Julie and I were two out of eight passengers selected from a possible 2,600, who were invited by the Captain to the bridge! Thanks to my Grandfather! It was 5 o clock in the morning on the 26th November, cold and windy, we watched with bated breath the breathtaking sight of the Brooklyn Bridge twinkling in the distance. It was a moving experience and one I will never forget. Anchored just off the port, the sun rose over that iconic view of the Manhattan skyline. Hearts beating fast, goodbye Queen Mary 2, thank you for everything. Hello New York. What excitement is waiting for us here? Recycling for Restoration Fund This month we have raised 6 for books. PLEASE NOTE, WE WILL NO LONGER BE RECYCLING STEEL CANS, OTHER STEEL ITEMS OR LARGE ELECTRICAL ITEMS, DUE A BIG REDUCTION IN PRICE. We can still recycle cables, leads and motors from electrical items, and all other non-magnetic metals. Scrap metal can be left at 7 Glebecoole Park (please call Maurice or Doreen on to ensure someone is at home before delivering items, as bags left are liable to be taken by other collectors or can draw unwanted attention if we are away overnight or on holidays). Please do not put any glass in bags of scrap metal. Please continue to leave bags of clean clothing, handbags, curtains and bedding, excluding duvets and pillows, at the church hall. We wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Maurice Atkinson 10
