Dear Parishioners, First of all may I take this opportunity to thank you for your good wishes and to commend you for your generosity to, and support of, the various projects we have run in the parish in the past months. With Christmas now behind us and the new year at the gate, we have a window of opportunity to pause and reflect more deeply on our life, to clarify priorities and affirm clear directions and intentions for the year to come. With the old drawing to a close and the new cycle about to begin, it's a good time to contemplate the patterns that weave the various systems in our life together: beginnings and endings, what is developing and what is dying. Where is there movement and flexibility? Where are we stuck and resistant to change? In a way these are questions which ask us where our energy lies and what saps our energy and stunts our growth. It is good too to ask these questions of our parish life where is there movement and flexibility and where are we stuck and resistant to change? As believers in the truth of scripture we should all find our energy and vitality in the living stream, the bread of life, the abundant life which Jesus came to give us, but too often we rely on other stimuli to get us up and running and of course they invariably leave us exhausted and flat. What are your priorities and intentions for the year to come? Do you set goals or are you content to take life as it comes? Do you have a plan, a matrix, on which you map out the hopes and possibilities you have for the coming year? Christ should be our Master plan, the alpha and omega of the year to come. If He is at the centre of our daily life then whatever life throws at us we have that strong inner core that will support us in times of trouble. Likewise in parish life, if we are a spirit filled church then there are no problems which cannot be overcome. If we are a spirit filled church then nothing can stop the growth of the spirit in this place. It has been a sad and difficult year for too many of you and I know that your faith has been a strength and a comfort to you and your families. I would encourage you to keep trusting and leaning on your Creator to quote Proverbs 3:5 trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths. Scripture assures us that one day all will be revealed to us, maybe this year, maybe not. In the meantime, with Christ at our core, with His kingdom as our focus and our goal, we won t go far wrong. I wish you all a Christ centered, fulfilling and happy New Year and may the God of hope fill you all with joy and peace in believing, so that by the Holy Spirit, you may abound in hope. Love in Christ, Carol A Gift Day for the Church Sunday 5th January 2014 As announced in last month s Review, we have included with this issue an envelope for anyone who wishes to make a contribution to our special gift day on Sunday 5th January. If you are a UK tax payer you can increase the value of your gift by ticking the box and signing the envelope so that Gift Aid can be reclaimed on your donation. Many thanks for any special contribution you are able to make as we begin a New Year together of worship and witness to God s continuing grace. 4

In Memoriam William (Billy) Jamison - Billy Jamison grew up in East Belfast and spent much of his adult life in Rathcoole but when he passed away in December, after a number of years of ill health, it was to Carnmoney Parish that his son David naturally turned. David and his wife Barbara have long connections with the parish and Barbara is part of the extensive Ireland family. Billy in his final months was living with them before being hospitalised in his final days, so although I didn t know Billy it was appropriate that he was commended to God s mercy from this parish. Billy lived well into his 80s and worked for 50 years in the shipyard. He brought up three sons and lived to see their children and children s children flourish, though he was sadly widowed while still only in his forties. His friendly and outgoing personality and sociable nature made him well known in his neighbourhood and his vibrant character will be remembered with deep affection by his family and many friends. We assure them of our continuing prayers as they mourn his loss at this sad time. Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 17th-25th January. Please, in your prayers for Christian Unity in this week, remember the Clergy and all participating in acts of witness to our common faith. Select Vestry Please Note that as agreed by the Vestry previously, there will be NO Select Vestry meeting in January. Any urgent business may be dealt with, if required, by a short meeting after church. Clergy Holidays The Vicar s post Christmas break will be from 26th December nd January 2014 inclusive. The Curate s break will be from 3rd 10th January 2014 inclusive. 5

This will be done before the Select Vestry meeting on 4th February and a notice to that effect will be placed on the door of the church for the Sundays preceding the review. The previous Register of Vestry members will be available for inspection throughout January. If you are new to the parish in the last year and wish to be included on the Register, or have moved since the last revision of the Register, please obtain the appropriate registration form from the Church Wardens. The Register of Vestry Members is the list of those entitled to vote at the Annual Easter Vestry and is open to all subscribing members of the parish over the age of 18. The names of those who have passed away in the preceding year and those who have ceased subscribing to the parish for at least a year will also be removed during the revision of the Register. Prayers at Noon Due to the first Wednesday in January being New Year s Day, there will be no monthly parish prayer time this month. Perhaps you can take a few minutes though, around noon, to remember and pray for the parish over the coming year. Thank You Many thanks to all our magazine distributors who deliver the Carnmoney Review in all weather conditions throughout the year, your help is very much appreciated. A special word of thanks to Billy Seville who is always so willing to look after the magazine when called on. I would also like to thank all those who help with the Elevenses after the Family Service each month. To you all, a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. Georgie Gibb 6

Church of Ireland Men s Society Once again the men of the CIMS proved they knew how a cooker works and are capable of producing cuisine to a standard as good as that on any Master Chef programme - well an Ulster fry anyway. The annual Men s Breakfast was, as usual, a great success in every aspect, including our speaker who this year came from the charity Blythewood Care. As usual a collection was made to the charity, from those attending, which this year came to a very generous 200. The committee would also like to thank all those who contributed to the breakfast, both through their donations and their expertise as cooks. Our next meeting, which will be on Tuesday 14th January, will have as our guest speaker Tom Robinson of Kids4School, who will update us on his recent visits to Tanzania. This is a charity which has become very special to the Men s Society, with indeed some members taking a personal interest in it. We would therefore ask for an especially good turnout for the meeting to show our support. The committee would also like to take the opportunity of wishing all our members and their families a very happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year. Trevor Gibb, Hon Secretary Some Thank Yous In the very busy lead up to Christmas our parishioners have responded with great generosity to a variety of needs. Our pre-christmas Table Sale and Coffee Morning raised 1585 and was not just a successful fundraising effort but a very enjoyable morning with a great buzz about the hall. Many thanks to Joan and the fundraising committee for all their continuing efforts. There was also an overwhelming response to our Toy Service and our parish Facebook page has a photo of the gifts surrounding the Christmas tree. The gifts donated for the Family Appeal from our parish completely filled the storeroom set aside for donations at Mossley Mill. They were very gratefully received, as up to that date, not many donations had been received and the ladies at the desk thought the economic situation was having quite an effect this year. So again, many thanks for this generous response. I have also been aware of how many contribute as well to the Bishops Appeal by returning those envelopes, and that generosity is equally valued. Thanks also to everyone contributing to the Premier Christian Radio Feed the Hungry campaign. I am sure the response to that appeal will also be generous and through all of this, many struggling families in our community will have both a better Christmas and ongoing help in the New Year. There is so much that goes into making Christmas a very special experience at Carnmoney Parish Church, and our worship services are wonderful each year. That hard work too from the choir and Sunday School leaders is greatly appreciated but the overflow of God s grace in such practical ways has also made this a Christmas to remember. Festive Flowers at Carnmoney Our first Festive Flower Arranging Class was held in the Memorial Room on Wednesday 4th December. Diane Lee expertly instructed nine ladies on how to create a table arrangement. As the pictures show, there is hidden talent within our congregation! Diane has agreed to hold another class before Easter; details will be advertised closer to the date. 8

Our meeting on 26th November was our Christmas Cracker - an in-house production! Our Action and Outreach co-ordinator, Rosalind Bloomfield, Diocesan President, Valerie Ash, and North Belfast Area Chairperson, Kathleen Lunn were with us. It was bring a friend night and we had a good turnout. The hall was festively decorated. Rosalind spoke on Around the World and Around the Corner, illustrating the work MU does overseas as well as at home. Our Christmas Cracker was based on facts, myths and legends of Christmas and was well put together by Joan. Carol, Sheila, Joan, Shirley and myself took part in different parts of the production. The Mills family provided us with lovely Christmas music. We had a tasty supper and the night certainly got us into the Christmas spirit. Our year ended with an outing to Willowfield Parish Church Christmas Tree Festival on 6th December. The display of trees depicted the Christmas story. The trees were wonderfully laid out and were thoroughly enjoyed by all. Anne Campbell, Secretary 9

Recycling for Restoration Fund Last month we raised 60 from clothes, 22 from books and 17 from scrap metal. Please continue to collect all clean clothing, shoes, hats, belts and handbags, all metal, including aluminium and steel food cans, broken and unwanted gold and silver jewellery (no matter how insignificant) all to raise much needed funds for the church. We can also recycle electrical items, including leads, cables and anything with wiring attached, such as phones. We would be very grateful if books, electrical items, cables etc. are not put in the same bags as clothes and cans. Clothing can be left at the church hall and all items, including scrap metal, at 7 Glebecoole Park (please call Maurice or Doreen on to ensure someone is at home before delivering items, as bags left are liable to be taken by other collectors). So before you bin or kerbie, think recycle for the church - if in doubt ring us. Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has collected material for recycling, bought and contributed books at the table sale in the hall, and to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
