With only a short passage to read each day you do not need to put aside a lot of time and the commentaries will help you to understand the passage and apply it to your own life. BRF publishes three different series, for more details please contact Mrs Joan Green on January is not usually a month that brings joy to the heart. It is all the gloom and bad weather of winter without Christmas to look forward to. It is a time when people yearn for warmer climes, hoping that when they return things will have cheered up a bit. The modern Church of England, ever keen to look on the bright side keeps the liturgical colour white, to symbolise a unified forty day season of Christmas and Epiphany from Christmas day to Candlemas. However such efforts are probably lost on many people, who feel that Christmas is more or less finished after Boxing day. Thus the idea that we are still in a Christmas related season at the end of January seems rather strange to them. Personally, I m a firm believer in the wisdom of keeping Plough Sunday, the first Sunday after Epiphany, at least in our hearts if not always in our church services. In pre twentieth century farming the Monday after Plough Sunday was the time to return to the heavy work of the year. How important it is that our relationship with God is in our workplace as well as our Sunday best. I think there is a lesson here. We carry the Christ light within us as we plough the furrow of our working lives even if such an image is now metaphorical rather than literal. And as always there are still things to look forward to, from Christian Unity week to Candlemas, but most of all it is the assurance of God s covenant with us, expressed through the sending of his son Jesus Christ. Even in the bleakest parts of winter new life stirs within the earth, a symbol of God s work continuing powerfully, even though it may be invisible to us. Just as beneath the snow and frost the natural world is preparing for spring, so God prepares his kingdom for us, making it truly a Happy New Year. Robin Davill 9 2

All Welcome **Wave of Prayer has been moved to April** Gerald E-J Hangs up his Blue Scarf finally Archbishop Sentamu in a service at York Minster recently conferred on Gerald the title Reader Emeritus and last month Sacrist Doreen Hayes at the end of the morning service in church presented him with a Gift Voucher from the PCC (representing both churches) and thanked him for all his work and support. When our then vicar, the Reverend Tony Hart, left in 2001 he spoke eloquently of Gerald s faithful ministry and we can do no better than repeat his words: It is 35 years [1966] since Gerald was admitted and first licensed as a Reader. He has shared his faith with us in an attractive & interesting way. He has helped us to worship and to pray. We have benefited from the stimulus of a lively mind. And (to the joy of vicars) he has been generously willing and reliable. LITTLE LIGHTS and JUNIORS at the PARISH CHURCH on the 4th Sunday of each month WE WELCOME ALL CHILDREN to our Service The next 4 gatherings of this kind will take place on: Sunday January 25th Sunday February 22nd Sunday March 15th (Mothering Sunday) [Children go into the Choir Vestry for part of the service to Learn Together about about Christian faith and Worship. Please write the names of people you would like to be remembered in the book there. We also have a prayer chain, where a number of people pray for those in special need. If you would like to join the chain, know more about it or have someone you want to be prayed for, please contact Chris Peel ( ). Please include in your prayers this month: 1. All those who live East of Crabmill Lane, York Road and along the Stillington Road. 2. Those who use and those who work at the Golf Club and Football Club 3. All those who maintain essential services including gas, electricity, refuse collectors, post office workers 4. Those who live on the Easingwold Road, Raskelf and those who work at or use the Village Hall and Cricket Club 3

5 ,Magazine Distribution...thanks to all of the people who deliver the magazine every month. A reminder that the annual subscriptions are now due. The price remains the same; 2.40 per year (20p per month). Lent Lunches Lent is early this year Ash Wednesday is on February 18th and the first one will be on Friday February 27th. They run for five weeks being hosted by our two churches, as well as the Mothers Union and the Roman Catholic and Methodist churches. The sequence will be outlined in next month s magazine Ebor Lectures...the theme Lighting the Fire: Foundation, Character and Practice of Education in the Public Life. continues and the next one is in York Minster on Wednesday February 8th at 7.00pm when the speaker will be Writer and Broadcaster Fiona Miller. There is no charge for lectures but application for tickets should be made to: eborlectures@yorksj.ac.uk. Freewill Offering...March is the time for preparing the issue of Freewill Offering envelopes. Anyone who does not have these packs and would like to use them, should please contact Mary Galloway (821714) or Alfred Boddison (821668). If you feel able to disclose that you are paying income tax, please apply Gift Aid when the Government will add 25p to every 1 you subscribe. The scheme covers contributors who are tax payers and non-taxpayers. Please make use of this facility that avoids having to use the `casual` envelopes in church, which are mainly for visitors. Children & Youth work...at Deanery Synod on January 21st at St Michael s, Tollerton, the Revd Nigel Chapman and Revd Chris Park will be doing a presentation on Children and Youth Work. Anyone from the Deanery is welcome to come along to this, not just Deanery Synod members, particularly if you have an interest in starting or developing work with Children and Youth.
