4 Dear Parishioners, Isaiah 26:3 - You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. Here we are in March already only nine months until we can put up our Christmas Trees again! Nine months, plenty of time the time of a confinement. I mention this NO, not because I am pregnant, but because the Church should be pregnant! We should take this time of lent to conceive new growth which would come to term by next Christmas when we celebrate the birth of the infant King. As in any conception, what is needed is love and passion; a passion to see our church grow; a passion to create a living, breathing presence on the Church Road; a passion to leave something behind us when we pass off this mortal coil. Sadly our attitude is very often, well if the church survives my lifetime then that s all I care about. It s a good job the disciples didn t feel this way or there would be no church at all today! But where do we get this energy, this incentive? Mercia and myself have our hands full just keeping things ticking over and this in itself is no mean feat in this day of all too many church closures. We have a strong identity as Carnmoney Parish Church and we are proud to belong here but we need to have a strong identity in the founder of the Church, Jesus Christ our Lord, for it is in Him and through Him and the Holy Spirit that we will find not only our peace, but also our passion. We have lots of activities going on in our church hall and volunteers for those activities. Sadly our Sunday School has diminished and I don t think it s good enough to say that the demographic of the area has changed, or that life in this century is different! Look at the number of baptisms we do, sixty since I joined the parish nearly eight years ago! Where are those children mums and dads, if you are reading this, where are you? If you want to see your children married here, your grandchildren christened here, you are going to have to help with the building blocks for the future of your church. The future of the church is not all about money it is about bodies. At this time when we think about the literal body of Christ and what He accomplished for each one of us, it is time to think about the corporate body of the Church. Perhaps as a younger generation to the majority in the church, you feel that it s not lively enough for you or your children well come and make it lively. There is such room for growth here, practical, physical growth, and a deep well of experience to draw on. There is an overflowing spiritual resource waiting for you, to refresh you, to fill the void which the chaos of life creates. So come and join us, come and feel the comfort and support of the body of Christ. Come and join the celebration for all the God given blessings of being alive. Come and share in the building up of the body of Christ in this place. To all of you reading this, whatever stage in life s journey, may God bless you and keep you, make His face to shine upon you and give you His peace. With love in Christ, 4 Carol Easter Vestry Advance Notice The Select Vestry have agreed the date of the Easter Vestry as Tuesday, 1st April from 7.30pm. I know it is April Fools Day (no comment!) but using the normal Vestry night for this seemed the best of several options. Further details will be in the April magazine but please keep the date free.

5 In Memoriam Christopher (Chris) Kyle - Chris Kyle passed away peacefully in early February after bravely enduring an illness which had been with him for some time. Chris and Hilda Kyle came to this parish over 40 years ago when they first lived in Elmfield. Chris worked alongside the late Alec Earley with whom he shared lifts to work. He was a quiet man who was loved by his wife, Hilda and his children Kristine and Michael. He was close to all in the family and was so proud of his grandchildren Matthew, Reuben and Megan. He was also fortunate in having a close relationship with his son-in-law and daughter-in-law, Alan and Anne who in turn had a high regard for him. We extend our sincere love and prayers to all in the family at this sad time of loss. Lent and Holy Week Ash Wednesday - 5th March 7pm in church. Service of Holy Communion for the beginning of Lent. Parish Lent course - Our Lent course, Exploring God s mercy will run on Thursday evenings in the Memorial Room from 6th March until 3rd April, apart from Thursday 20th March to allow for the monthly Healing Service. Hamilton Church of Ireland Men s Society I don t think there was any doubt that the Men s Society Annual Dinner was a great success again this year. The Templeton did us proud by producing an excellent meal and, with the lively chat around the tables, how could it have been anything else? Our thanks go to all those who organised it and especially to all those friends and family who joined us to make it such a great evening. Our meeting at 8,00pm on Tuesday 11th March will be a very special one for anyone interested in sport, especially rugby. We are very fortunate to have as our speaker the Rev. Andrew Thompson, who is Chaplain to the Ulster rugby team. This is a unique opportunity to get an insight into what has made the team so successful and what Andrew s position as Chaplain entails. We know that a number of members of our congregation are very keen to join us for this talk and therefore we extend a welcome to friends and family who may want to attend. Trevor Gibb, Hon Secretary CMS Ireland - Advance Notice Visit of New Mission Partners Our new CMS Ireland Mission Partners, Rory and Denise Wilson and their little boy Gideon are home for a few months this spring and we have arranged for them to be with us on Palm Sunday, 13th April. Rory is the Medical Director of Kiwoko Hospital in Uganda and Denise is a trained paediatric nurse and is involved in teaching student nurses at the training school attached to the hospital. Because the 11am service on Easter Day is normally Holy Communion, this year Palm Sunday will be our Family Service, followed by our usual bread and soup lunch in aid of the CMS Ireland Lent project. This is a great opportunity for us to meet the Wilsons informally as well as having their participation in our Family Service. Please come along to meet them if possible. Bishop s Lenten Talks 2014 The Bishop of Connor s Lenten Talks this year will be on the themes Discipleship and Ministry. A talk on Discipleship will be held at the following three venues on these dates: Tuesday 4th March - Bushmills Parish Centre. Monday 10th March - Jordanstown Parish Centre. Tuesday 1st April - Jordanstown Parish Centre. Monday 7th April - Christ Church, Lisburn. Each evening will begin at 7.30pm and places can be booked through the Bishop of Connor s Secretary, Mrs Rosemary Patterson on Prayers at Noon The next of our monthly prayer times will be at midday on Wednesday 5th March. Volunteers Have a Longer, Happier Life Volunteering may be as helpful to you as it is to the people you help: a recent study has found that it may well improve your health and make you happier. People who volunteer report having lower levels of depression and higher levels of well-being than average, while some research even suggests that it promotes a longer and healthier life. A review of forty papers on the subject by researchers at the University of Exeter, has found that volunteers were a fifth less likely to die within the next four to seven years than average. They have lower depression and higher levels of well-being and life satisfaction. Volunteers often say they want to give something back to their community, but experts say they struggle to explain the benefits that volunteers apparently receive. An estimated 22.5% of people in Europe devote part of their spare time to volunteering, compared with 27% in America and 36% in Australia. As St Paul wrote to the Galatians, So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. (Gal. 6:10) Bowling Club AGM The Parish Bowling Club AGM will be help in the Memorial Room on Monday 10th March at 7.30pm. Please come along and show your support. 10 Mothering Sunday 4th Sunday in Lent There is an old Jewish saying: God could not be everywhere, and therefore He made mothers. Mother Church, Mother Earth, Mother of the Gods - our human mothers - all of them have been part of the celebration of Mothering Sunday - as the fourth Sunday in Lent is affectionately known. It has been celebrated in the UK since at least the 16th century. In Roman times, great festivals were held every Spring to honour Cybele, Mother of all the Gods. Other pagan festivals in honour of Mother Earth were also celebrated. With the arrival of Christianity, the festival became one honouring Mother Church. During the Middle Ages, young people apprenticed to craftsmen or working as live-in servants were allowed only one holiday a year on which to visit their families - which is how Mothering Sunday got its name. This special day became a day of family rejoicing, and the Lenten fast was broken. In some places the day was called Simnel Day, because of the sweet cakes called simnel cakes traditionally eaten on that day. In recent years the holiday has changed and in many ways now resembles the American Mothers Day, with families going out to Sunday lunch and generally making a fuss of their mother on the day. All in the Month of March 175 years ago:- on 23rd March 1839 the first recorded use of the word 'OK' was found - in the 'Boston Morning Post', Massachusetts. 125 years ago:- on 31st March 1889 the Eiffel Tower in Paris was officially opened. 100 years ago:- on 14th March 1914 Bill Owen, British actor best known for his role as Compo in 'Last of the Summer Wine' was born. 80 years ago:- on 26th March 1934 driving tests were introduced in Britain (voluntary until June 1935) 70 years ago:- on 24th March 1944 the Great Escape took place. 76 Allied prisoners broke out of the Stalag Luft III prisoner-of-war camp near Sagan, Germany, after digging tunnels. 73 were recaptured and 50 executed. 30 years ago:- on 5th March 1984 (until March 1985) the miners strike took place. 6,000 coal miners in Yorkshire began a strike to protest against pit closures and job losses. It lasted until March years ago:- on 12th March 1994 the first women priests in the Church of England were ordained in London. 10 years ago:- on 30th March 2004 Alistair Cooke, BBC broadcaster of 'Letter from America', died. Recycling for Restoration Fund Last month we raised 70 for clothes, 20 from scrap metal and 20 for books. Please continue to collect all clean clothing, shoes, hats, belts and handbags, all metal, including aluminium and steel food cans, broken and unwanted gold and silver jewellery (no matter how insignificant) all to raise much needed funds for the church. We can also recycle electrical items, including leads, cables and anything with wiring attached, such as phones. We would be very grateful if books, electrical items, cables etc. are not put in the same bags as clothes and cans. Clothing can be left at the church hall and all items, including scrap metal, at 7 Glebecoole Park (please call Maurice or Doreen on to ensure someone is at home before delivering items, as bags left are liable to be taken by other collectors). So before you bin or kerbie, think recycle for the church - if in doubt ring us. 10 Maurice Atkinson
