3 A Word of Welcome from Revd Helene T Steed Welcome to our church, with its striking red tower, seen all over East Belfast! We strive to be the spiritual home for all our parishioners, where people of all ages and backgrounds feel at home as they seek to grow in faith. Therefore, we offer a wide variety of worship services and activities: Messy Church and study groups; social events and teaching of faith; opportunities for spiritual development, friendship and involvement. No matter your interests, there is something for you and your family in St Mark s. In our church, we have a motto: to support and encourage one another. Encouragement is important to us, because it helps us to grow as people, it boosts our confidence and helps us to grow closer to God. Encouragement also creates a friendly atmosphere! It is not long until Christmas and in St Mark s we are busy getting ready for the festive season and the annual celebration of the birth of Jesus. There will be mince pies, Christmas carols, friendly chatting in the hall and services in our beautiful church, and so much more. You, your family and friends are very welcome. Please call round and take part. As you see in the following pages, January and February also have much in store. There is a great choice. Do come along or give the contact person or myself a ring. 4 You are welcome to our Advent and Christmas celebrations Advent Sunday Family Service Sunday 2 December 2018, 10:45 am Join us for our all-age service with Advent Carols. Browse our Christmas craft stall and enjoy some seasonal refreshments in the hall afterwards. Advent Carol Service Sunday 16 December 2018, 6:30 pm Come and sing carols and enjoy seasonal music and readings, followed by refreshments.

6 Join us for We welcome children with their parents to our parish hall for some crafty fun, games and delicious treats. Messy Church is a fun and simple way to explain the Christian faith. 7 There s more for children to enjoy. Mums and Chums: Our toddler group has been popular in our community for over 35 years. The group meets every Wednesday at 10:15 am in the Heyn Hall for a morning of play, fun and singing. Refreshments served for young and old. Contact: Parish Office Sunday School and Crèche: Meets during the 10:45 am Sunday service. Stories, craft and games. Contact: Hannah Nelson Rainbows, Brownies and Guides: Our girls meet weekly in the hall on Mondays during term time and attend two parade services for World Thinking Day and for Harvest time. Contact: Heather Ellison Singing Club: Does your child just love to sing? Bring them along to the hall from 6-7 pm on Thursday for fun singing together. Contact: Norah Meharry Youth Fellowship: A growing group of young people, meeting on Sundays at 7:30 pm in the Wardrobe, our designated youth area in the hall. Contact: Sarah Bass

Book Club: Meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 8:00 pm in the Rectory (4 Sydenham Avenue) to discuss a novel with a faith or moral aspect. 4 December - Things fall apart by Chinua Achebe 8 January - The Churchwarden by Marjorie Roberts 5 February - Barabbas by Pär Lagerkvist Contact: Revd Helene Steed Creative Stitching Group: for anyone who enjoys knitting, embroidery, cross-stitch, patchwork, crochet or anything creative.the group has made a series of stunning banners and opens its craft stall twice a year. Meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, at 7:30 pm in the hall. Contact: Ann Clark Evergreens Club: A group of seniors, young at heart who meet on the second Wednesday of the month at 2:30 pm for fellowship and activities. 12 December - Christmas Party 9 January - Bring and Buy Sale 13 February - St Valentine s celebration Contact: Lorna Symmons Flower Guild: Organises all flowers and decorations for the church. Contact: Johann Henderson Men s Group: Meets on the second Tuesday of the month, 7:30 pm in the hall. 11 December - Christmas Quiz (ladies also welcome) 8 January - Indoor remote-controlled aeroplanes 12 February - Dundela Island Discs, time to dig out your favourite vinyl. 9 Scottish Country Dancing: The group meets in the hall on Thursdays at 7:30 pm during the autumn, winter and spring months. Contact: John Campbell St Mark s Choir: Meets in church every Thursday at 7:30 pm. Our Spiritual Singers also have occasional pop-up events. Contact: Parish office St Mark s Music Group: A group of talented musicians, all parishioners, who play violin, viola, flute, recorder, French horn, trombone and keyboard. The group plays together at many of our services. Contact: Sarah Bass St Mark s Players: A long established drama group in the parish, who participate in our worship with dramatic readings from Scripture and poetry. The group meets on Wednesday evenings in the hall. Next production 31 January - 2 February 2019, Cupid Wore Skirts by Sam Cree. Contact: Eileen Anghel Study Group: Meets on the second and fourth Wednesday at 8 pm in the hall. We listen to a talk and then enjoy a conversation about the topic over a cup of tea. Contact: Revd Helene Steed Walking group: Meets monthly on a Saturday afternoon for a walk including a tea/coffee stop. Some walks are more challenging than others but we always have options to suit the whole family. 10 Our Worship in St Mark s Sunday A variety of services, all with different character. 8:30 am Holy Communion This is a said, short, meditative celebration of the Lord s Supper. 9:30 am Contemporary Service This service offers a more informal style of worship, teaching and modern worship songs. We enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and time of fellowship before the service. 10:45 am Parish Worship This service is firmly rooted in the Church of Ireland Prayer Book, supported by our choir, organ and music group. 1st Sunday - Family Service 2nd & 4th Sundays - Morning Prayer 3rd Sunday - Holy Communion. Our Sunday School and Crèche meet during this service, normally in the Heyn Hall. The children stay in church for the first part of the service and leave for their groups after the Children s thought for the day. 6:30 pm Evening Service 1st Sunday - Holy Communion and Ministry of Healing. 2nd & 3rd Sundays - Compline - a quiet contemplative service 4th Sunday - Youth Service, led by members of our Youth Fellowship Wednesday 11:00 am Holy Communion - A short said service in the choir stalls. 7:30 pm The Late Evening Office with Prayers for the sick, in the Side Chapel.

BOOK FAIR Saturday 19 January 2019, 10 am - 12 noon presented by The Book Well in St Mark s parish hall, in aid of local charities. Books, tea, coffee and treats
