August :00 AM Bryce Fiamoncini Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate 59th Annual Holy Dormition (Assumption) Pilgrimage: The Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate will be hosting the 59th Dormition (Assumption) pilgrimage on August 10 & 11, 2013 at our motherhouse in Sloatsburg, NY. This year's theme is "One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism." All information pertaining to this pilgrimage will be in the vestibules of our parishes. Religious Education Classes: Religious education classes are suspended for the summer. All children from pre-school age to 8th grade are encouraged to attend in the fall when classes resume. Vacationing for the Summer: If you are traveling this summer on vacation and do not attend liturgies, please contribute your previous weeks envelopes that you have missed in the weekly collection basket when you return from vacation. Peter & Paul's Altar Rosary Society is sponsoring a bus trip on November 12 1 \ 2013 to the American Music Theater in Lancaster to see the "Christmas Noel" show. Lunch will be at Shady Maple. Cost is $75.00 and includes: transportation, lunch, a ticket to the show, and a tip for the bus driver. The stage shows will be dedicated to the twentysixth anniversary of Schuylkill County's Kazka Ukrainian Folk Ensemble who have been entertaining audiences with traditional and exciting dance and song all those years. 5 August6 Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ The Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ is celebrated each year on August 6. The feast commemorates the transfiguration or metamorphosis of Christ on Mount Tabor, when our Lord appeared in His divine glory before the Apostles Peter, James, and John. Scriptural Account The event of the Transfiguration is recorded in three of the four Gospels: Matthew 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-8, and Luke 9: Jesus took the Apostles Peter, James, and John with Him up upon a mountain, and while they were on the mountain Jesus was transfigured. His face shone like the sun, and His garments became glistening white. Moses and Elijah appeared with Christ, talking to Him. Peter declared how good it was for them to be there and expressed the desire to build three booths for Moses, Elijah, and Christ. This reference to the booths could imply that this occurred during the time of the Feast of Tabernacles when the Jews would be camping out in the fields for the grape harvest; for this Feast had acquired other associations in the course of its history, including the memory of the wanderings in the wilderness recorded in the Old Testament book of Exodus. While Peter was speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them. A voice came from the cloud saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him." When the disciples heard this they fell on their faces filled with awe. Jesus came to them and told them to not be afraid. When the three looked up they saw only Jesus. As Jesus and His disciples came down the mountain, He told them not to speak of what they had seen until He had risen from the dead. Icon of the Feast In the icon of the Feast of the Transfiguration, Christ is the central figure (1.), appearing in a dominant position within a circular mandorla. He is clearly at the visual and theological center of the icon. His right hand is raised in blessing, and his left hand contains a scroll. The mandorla with its brilliant colors of white, gold, and blue represent the divine glory and light. The halo around the head of Christ is inscribed with the Greek words 0 on, meaning "The One Who is". Elijah (2.) and Moses (3.) stand at the top of separate mountain peaks to the left and right of Christ. They are bowing toward Christ with their right hands raised in a gesture of intercession towards Him. Saint John Chrysostom explains the presence of these two fathers of the faith from the Old Testament in three ways. He states that they represent the Law and the Prophets (Moses received the Law from God, and Elijah was a great prophet); they both experienced visions of God (Moses on Mount Sinai and Elijah on Mount Carmel); and they represent the living and the dead (Elijah, the living, because he was taken up into heaven by a chariot of fire, and Moses, the dead, because he did experience death). Below Christ are the three Apostles, who by their posture in the icon show their response to the transfiguration of Christ (4.). James has fallen over backwards with his hands over his eyes. John in the center has fallen prostrate. Peter is kneeling and raises his right hand toward Christ in a gesture expressing his desire to build the three booths. The garments of the Apostles are in a state of disarray as to indicate the dramatic impact the vision has had on them. The icon of the feast directs our attention toward the event of the Transfiguration and specifically to the glory of God as revealed in Christ. This event came at a critical point in the ministry of our Lord, just as He was setting out on His journey to Jerusalem. He would soon experience the humiliation, suffering, and death of the Cross. However, the glorious light of the Resurrection was revealed to strengthen His disciples for the trials that they would soon experience. The feast also points to the great and glorious Second Coming of our Lord and the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God when all of creation will be transfigured and filled with light.

6 ll 1 b Sunday After Pentecost Troparion:. When You went down to death, 0 Life Immortal, You struck Hades dead with the blazing light of Your divinity. When You raised the dead from the nether world, all the powers of heaven cried out: "O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory be to You!" Kontakion: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: You rose from the tomb, 0 almighty Savior; and Hades, seeing this wonder, was stricken with fear; and the dead arose. Creation saw and rejoices with You, and Adam exults. And the world, my Savior, sings Your praises for ever. Theotokion: Now and ever and forever: Amen. The tomb and death could not hold the Mother of God, unceasing in her intercession and an unfailing hope of patronage, for as the Mother of Life she was transferred to life by Him Who had dwelt in her ever-virgin womb. Prokimenon: The Lord is my strength and my song of praise, and He has become my salvation. V. The Lord has indeed chastised me, but He has not delivered me to death. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! The Lord will hear you in the day of tribulation; the name of the God of Jacob will shield you. V. Lord, grant victory to the king and hear us in the day that we shall call upon You. Peter & Paul Church, 8:15 AM to 9:00 AM, and at Assumption B.V.M. Church on Sunday at 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM in the confessionals. A Prayer for Renewal Almighty Lord, we bow our heads in prayer And beseech You to rebuild our House of God. The psalmist reminds us, Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Dear Lord, rebuild this house and guide the hands of the architects, the contractors, the laborers; May they perfect the imperfections, as they recreate and renew this church, our Heaven on earth, where we gather to lay aside all cares of life. Almighty Lord, we are also reminded that we too are temples, living temples of the Holy Spirit During this time of re-creation and renewal May our imperfections also be perfected. May the gifts of the Holy Spirit renew in each of us our faith and our love of God and each other. May we spiritually become the children of God we are called to be Christian faithful who are forgiving and caring, and welcoming. And may our patrons, Saints Peter and Paul, always inspire us through their courage and example to faithfully hear the Word of God and live it. Altar Rosary Society Sunday: Sunday, August 4 1 fi, 2013 is Altar Rosary Society Sunday. All members are asked to join in praying the Rosary before liturgy, and receive the Holy Eucharist as a body. New members are being accepted into this society. Holy Name Society Sunday: Sunday, August 11th, 2013 is Holy Name Society Sunday. All members are urged to pray together, and receive the Holy Eucharist as a group. New members are always welcome into this society. Dues are $ 5.00 per. year. Wedding Anniversary Celebration: Wedding Anniversary Celebration will be held on September 29, Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Philadelphia, Pa.
