2 SUNDAY OF THE PUBLICAN & THE PHARISEE February 5, 2017 TROPAR: Believers, let us worship and praise in song the Word of God. He is co-eternal with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Yet he was born of a virgin for our salvation. In the flesh he willingly ascended the cross and suffered death, that he might raise the dead by his glorious resurrection. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Now and forever and ever. Amen KONDAK: O my Savior, you descended into hell, and you shattered its gates as the Almighty. Together with yourself as the creator you resurrected the dead. You brought to naught the sting of death. Adam has been liberated from the curse, O kind and loving God. And so we all cry out: Save us, O Lord. PROKIMEN: You, O Lord, will protect us and preserve us from this generation; and that will be forever. Verse: Save me, O Lord, for the godly are no more. A reading for St. Paul s Second Epistle to Timothy (3:10-15) Timothy, my son, you have followed closely my teaching and my conduct. You have observed my resolution, fidelity, patience, love, and endurance, through persecutions and sufferings in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. You know what persecutions I have had to bear, and you know how the Lord saved me from them all. Anyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus can expect to be persecuted. But all the while evil men and charlatans will go from bad to worse, deceiving others, themselves deceived. You, for your part, must remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know who your teachers were. Likewise, from your infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, the source of the wisdom, which through faith in Jesus Christ leads to salvation. ALLELUIA: O Lord I will sing of your mercies forever; and from generation to generation my mouth will proclaim your truth. Alleluia (3). For you have said: Mercy shall be built up forever; your truth shall be established in the heavens. Alleluia (3).

The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men robbers, evil-doers, adulterers or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.' "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.' "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." (Myasopusna Information on back page.) THE ISLAND MOVIE: On Sunday, March 5 th we will show the movie, The Island at our Parish Coffee Hour. The movie has a penitential theme which we may reflect upon for the Lenten season. A light lunch will be served. Please sign up in the back of the church. WEEKEND PRESENTATION: A schedule of Saturday, April 1 st and Sunday, April 2 nd is planned for a guest speaker, Hugh Owen from the Kolbe Center for the Study of Creation. He will give a twopart presentation, part one will be at Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Plymouth on Saturday evening and part two at Transfiguration of Our Lord Church on Sunday. Everyone is welcome, invite your neighbors, friends and family members. WEEKEND RETREAT ON MARCH 18 th and 19 th : Father George Worshak will give a retreat during the liturgies (for the homily) Saturday and Sunday. You will benefit greatly from attending both liturgies and hearing both parts of his presentation on the Veneration of the Cross. Father George will also be hearing Confessions on Saturday during liturgy. SVIACHENNE DINNER: Sviachenne will be held on Sunday, April 30, 2017.

5 MYASOPUSNA 2017: Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church, in the Hanover Section of Nanticoke, invites you to its Myasopusna dinner celebration on Meatfare Sunday, February 19 th, at the church hall, at Bliss and Center Streets. Doors will open at noon, with Ukrainian crafts on display and for sale throughout the event. Dinner will be served at 12:30pm-2:00pm, and will include holuptsi, varenyky, kovbasa, green beans, black bread and butter, and dessert. Entertainment will follow featuring the Holy Year Choir, Kazka, Saint Mary's Dancers, and other entertainment. Dinner tickets are $15 in advance ticket. No tickets will be sold at the door. Ticket purchase can be made by calling Gerri at , or Helen at MYASOPUSNA BASKET RAFFLE: We are looking for baskets for our Raffle to be held at the Myasopusna. MYASOPUSNA FLYERS: Myasopusna Flyers will be available in the back of the church, if you can, please put a flyer in your favorite places of business. We count on your help to spread the word! MYASOPSNA SERVICE: We need servers to work on Sunday at our Myasopusna Dinner. We do need help! MYASOPUSNA DESSERTS: If you can donate a dessert for the dinner- it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! MYASOPUSNA PYROHY: Pyrohy making will be on Saturday, February 11 th with potato preparation on Friday, February 10 th. We are making a limited number of pyrohy, however if many turn up to pinch, it will make the work easier all the way around. MARCH FLEA MARKET SATURDAYS: Tentatively we will be holding a flea market on Saturdays in the month of March. (Actual dates to be announced.) Please hang on to your flea market items until Myasopusna is over!! Storage is limited until then- but start collecting!! We need merchandise for sale! 6 LOCAL CHURCH NEWS PRELENTEN PORK DINNER: Father Myron Myronyuk and his parish family of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Scranton, cordially invite you to join us for our annual Pre- Lenten SLOW ROASTED PORK DINNER on Sunday, February 12, 2017, beginning at 12:30pm at St. Vladimir Parish Center, 428 North Seventh Avenue, between West Lackawanna Avenue and West Linden Street. Menu: Slow roasted pork loin with gravy, Ukrainian sweet and sour cabbage (kapusta), butter and dill potatoes, vegetable, applesauce, rolls, dessert, coffee, tea, beverages. Serving is from 11:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. The Dinner consists of three Piggies, mashed potatoes, honey glazed carrots, rolls, and dessert. Take outs will be available. Cost is $10.
