2 TWENTY-THREE SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST October 23, 2016 TROPAR: While Mary (Magdalene) was standing at the tomb in search of your most pure body, angelic powers appeared and the guards were mortified. You took hell captive; it could not overcome you. You revealed yourself as the Source of life to the virgin. O Lord, risen from the dead, glory to you. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Now and forever and ever. Amen. KONDAK: Christ God, the Giver of life, with his life-giving hand raised all the dead up out of the valley of darkness. He gifted the human race with resurrection for he is the Savior of all, he is the Life and Resurrection and God of all. PROKIMEN: Save you people and bless, O Lord, your inheritance. Verse: To you I will cry, O Lord my God, lest you turn away from me in silence. A reading from St. Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians (2:4-10) Brethren, but God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. ALLELUIA: All who abide in the grace of the Most High, shall live under the protection of the God of heaven. Alleluia (3). 3 GOSPEL Luke 16:19-31 There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire. But Abraham replied, Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us. He answered, Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment. Abraham replied, They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them. No, father Abraham, he said, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent. He said to him, If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead. COMMUNION VERSE: Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise Him in the highest. Alleluia. (3). Blessed is the servant who loves his brother as much when he is sick and useless as when he is well and be of service to him. 4 CHURCH NEWS. ROSARY: October is the month of the rosary. We will pray the rosary starting 15 minutes before Divine Liturgy on Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers are needed to lead and answer the rosary. PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: There will a meeting of the Parish Council on Tuesday, November 15 at 6:30PM. All are welcome!! PYROHY SALE: We will be selling Potato Pyrohy on December 9 & 10. The cost of pyrohy is $6.00 per Dozen. Pyrohy orders will be capped at 300 dozen. Orders can be placed with Gerri Adamchak at Place your orders early! DIVINE LITURGIES: Please consider remembering your loved ones with a memorial liturgy either on Saturday or during the week. To schedule a liturgy, please contact the rectory at FLOWERS FOR OCTOBER: Our many thanks to Mrs. Olga Yurkowski and Mrs. Helen O Bremski who donated the flowers for the month of October. PIGGIE DINNER: Our parish will hold a Fall Piggie Dinner on Sunday, November 13 in our hall. Serving will be from noon to 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Children under 10 - $7.00. 5 RUMMAGE SALE: The Saint Peter & Paul s Woman Society (Plymouth) will be sponsoring a Rummage Sale October 21(Friday 9AM-4PM), October 22( Saturday 9AM-1PM ), & October 23(Sunday 1PM-3PM). A bake sale will also be available. LUC MEETING & MOLEBEN: Father Myron Myronyuk, pastor of Scranton s St. Vladimir Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, extends a warm invitation to a beautiful Prayer Service - Moleben to the Mother of God - on Sunday, October 23, 2016 at 3:00pm. A church sponsored meeting of the North Anthracite Council of the League of Ukrainian Catholics [LUC] will take place immediately after the Moleben. This is a public event of St. Vladimir parish to which all parishioners and friends are welcome. ANNUAL TURKEY-FEST : Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, will host their annual Turkey Fest on Saturday, November 5 th from 2 to 7 pm in their school hall on the corner of North River and West Chestnut Streets in Wilkes-Barre. This event features a traditional turkey dinner, festival games, raffle and a basket auction. Dinners will be $11.00 for adults and $7.00 for children. Eat-In or Take-out. Walk-Ins are welcome, but reservations are encouraged. Call (570) to make a reservation. Non-perishable food items will be collected for donation to a local food pantry. Receive a ticket for each item donated for our special food drive raffle. HOMEBOUND PARISHIONERS: Father Walter is trying to put together a list of homebound parishioners to visit and bring Eucharist to on a monthly basis, on the first Fridays. DESIGNER BINGO - St. Andrew Parish, Wilkes-Barre is holding a Designer Bingo on Sunday, October 23, 2016 in St. Andrew (St. Patrick) church hall, 318 Parrish St., Wilkes- Barre. Bingo starts at 1:00 P.M. Doors open at Noon. Tickets are $20 and includes 20 games. Some prizes include purses by Coach, Dooney & Bourke, Vera Bradley and others. Also jewelry and gift cards. There will be a Theme Basket raffle and 50/50 drawing. Food, refreshments and baked goods will also be available. For tickets or more information, please call St. Andrew Parish at or All Faithful Invited to Prayer Services in Honor of Bishop Soter Ortynsky, First Ukrainian Catholic Bishop in the U.S., to be be held Sunday, October 30 at 3:00 pm in the Philadelphia Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral The Ukrainian Catholic Hierarchy of the USA invites all of the clergy, religious and faithful to participate in a prayerful remembrance of our first Ukrainian Catholic bishop, Most Rev. Soter Stephen Ortynsky, OSBM. We will commemorate the 150 th anniversary of his birth, the 125 th anniversary of ordination to the holy priesthood, and the 100 th anniversary of his death, on Sunday, October 30 th at 3 pm at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia. Moleben to the Mother of God will be celebrated by the Ukrainian Catholic, Byzantine Catholic and Roman Catholic bishops with a homily offered by Rev. Dr. Ivan Kaszczak, author, Bishop Soter Stephen Ortynsky and the Genesis of the Eastern Catholic Churches in America, to be followed by a Panakhyda. After the services, all are invited for refreshments in the Cathedral Social Hall
