2 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST August 14, 2016 TROPAR: When the Lord s faithful women disciples heard the enlightening proclamation of the resurrection from an angel, they threw off their forefather s condemnation, and with joyful boast broke the news to the apostles: Death is no more. Christ God is risen blessing the world with great mercy. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Now and forever and ever. Amen. KONDAK : My Savior and Redeemer from the grave as God overcame earth-born bonds and shattered the gates of hell. And since he is Master over all, he arose on the third day. PROKIMEN: O how great and wonderful are your works, O Lord! In your wisdom you have made them all. Verse: Bless the Lord, O my soul, O Lord, my God, you are exceedingly great. A reading from St. Paul's Epistle to the Corinthians (16:13-24): Brethren, be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love. You know that the household of Stephanas were the first converts in Achaia, and they have devoted themselves to the service of the saints. I urge you, brothers, to submit to such as these and to everyone who joins in the work, and labors at it. I was glad when Stephanas, Fortunatus and Achaicus arrived, because they have supplied what was lacking from you. For they refreshed my spirit and yours also. Such men deserve recognition. The churches in the province of Asia send you greetings. Aquila and Priscilla greet you warmly in the Lord, and so does the church that meets at their house. 20All the brothers here send you greetings. Greet one another with a holy kiss. 3 The Lord told this parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit. The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. Last of all, he sent his son to them. They will respect my son, he said. But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, This is the heir. Come, let s kill him and take his inheritance. So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants? He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, they replied, and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time. Jesus said to them, Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes? COMMUNION VERSE: Praise the Lord from the heavens; Praise Him in the highest. Alleluia. (3). The MEMORARE Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored you help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins and mother; to you do I come; before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful; O Mother of the World Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in you mercy hear and answer me. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Plymouth, PA THE DORMITION OF THE MOST HOLY MOTHER OF GOD This feast commemorates the happy death of the Blessed Virgin May. Her death was so calm and free from pains and remorse that it seemed to be a sleep. It is an article of faith that the Blessed Mother of our Savior was taken body and soul into heaven upon her death. Although the Blessed Virgin really died and her soul was separated from her body, the latter, however, was preserved from corruption and shortly afterwards was re-united to her soul. Thus the Blessed Virgin entered heaven with a glorified body and soul. We do not know how many years after Christ s death the Blessed Virgin remained on earth. Some writers affirm that she died at the age of seventy two, that is, twenty two years after our Lord s death. The feast itself was introduced in the second or third century, for Pope Gelasius I ( ) calls it very old in one of his letters. In the fifth century it spread to the whole Church.
