7 , The Feast ofthe Descent ofthe \, Holy Spirit (Green Sunday). i 1I n('.fiilj '''';'. ".', "'1,-' ",'.",_ I~()( fll ;~ Introduction The Feast of Holy Pentecost is celebrated each year on the fiftieth day after the Great and Holy Feast of Pascha (Resurrection) and ten days after the Feast of the Ascension, ofchrist. The Feast is always celebrated on a Sunday. The Feast commemorates the descent ofthe Holy Spirit upon the Apostles on the day of Pentecost, a feast of the Jewish tradition. It also celebrates the establishment of the Church through the preaching of the Apostles and the baptism of the thousands who on that day believed in the Gospel message of salvation through Jesus Christ. The Feast is also seen as the culmination ofthe revelation ofthe Holy Trinity. The story of Pentecost is found in the book of The Acts of the Apostles. In Chapter two we are told that the Apostles of our Lord were gathered together in one place. Suddenly, a sound came from heaven like a rushing wind, filling the entire house where they were sitting. Then, tongues of fire appeared, and one sat upon each one ofapostles. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began I :, to speak in other languages as directed by the Spirit (Acts 2: 1-4). This miraculous event occurred on the Jewish Feast of Pentecost, celebrated by the Jews on the fiftieth day after the Passover as the culmination ofthe Feast ofweeks (Exodus 34:22; Deuteronomy 16: 10). The Feast of Weeks began on the third day after the Passover with the presentation of the first harvest sheaves to God, and it concluded on Pentecost with the offering of two loaves of unleavened bread, representing the first products of the harvest (Leviticus 23: 17-20; Deuteronomy 16:9-10). It commemorates the giving ofthe Law, the Torah, to Moses on Mt. Sinai. Since the Jewish Feast of Pentecost was a great pilgrimage feast, many people from throughout the Roman Empire were gathered in Jerusalem on this day. When the people in Jerusalem heard the sound, they came together and heard their own languages being spoken by the Apostles (Acts 2:5-6). The people were amazed, knowing that some of those speaking were Galileans, and not men who would normally speak many different languages. They wondered what this meant, and some even thought the Apostles were drunk (Acts 2:7-13). Peter, hearing these remarks, stood up and addressed the crowd. He preached to the people regarding the Old Testament prophecies about the coming of the Holy Spirit. He spoke about Jesus Christ and His death and glorious Resurrection. Great conviction fell upon the people, and they asked the Apostles, "What shall we do?" Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38-39).

8 The Bible records that on that day about three thousand were baptized. Following, the book of Acts states that the newly baptized continued daily to hear the teaching of the Apostles, as the early Christians met together for fellowship, the breaking of bread, and for prayer. Many wonderful signs and miracles were done through the Apostles, and the Lord added to the Church daily those who were being saved (Acts 2:42-47). Icon of the Feast The icon ofthe Feast of Pentecost is known as "The Descent of the Holy Spirit". It is an icon of bold colors of red and gold signifying that this is a great event. The movement ofthe icon is from the top to the bottom. At the top of the icon is a semicircle with rays coming from it. The rays are pointing toward the Apostles, and the tongues of fire are seen descending upon each one of them signifying the descent ofthe Holy Spirit. The building in the background of the icon represents the upper room where the Disciples of Christ gathered after the Ascension. The Apostles are shown seated in a semicircle which shows the unity of the Church. Included in the group of the Apostles is Saint Paul, who, though not present with the others on the day of Pentecost, became an Apostle of the Church and the greatest missionary. Also included are the four Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John holding books of the Gospel, while the other Apostles are holding scrolls that represent the teaching authority given to them by Christ. In the center of the icon below the Apostles, a royal figure is seen against a dark background. This is a symbolic figure, Cosmos, representing the people of the world living in darkness and sin, and involved in pagan worship. However, the figure carries in his hands a cloth containing scrolls which represent the teaching ofthe Apostles. The tradition ofthe Church holds that the Apostles carried the message ofthe Gospel to all parts ofthe world. In the icon of Pentecost we see the fulfillment ofthe promise of the Holy Spirit, sent down upon the Apostles who will teach the nations and baptize them in the name of the Holy Trinity. Here we see that the Church is brought together and sustained in unity through the presence and work ofthe Holy Spirit, that the Spirit guides the Church in the missionary endeavor throughout the world, and that the Spirit nurtures the Body of Christ, the Church, in truth and love. Celebration of the Feast of Pentecost This great Feast ofthe Church is celebrated with the Divine Liturgy ofsaint John Chrysostom on the Sunday that is the fiftieth day after the celebration of Pascha. The Liturgy is conducted on the day of the Feast, and begins with the kneeling prayers. These prayers mark the beginning of the practice of kneeling during the Liturgy at the time when the holy gifts of bread and wine are consecrated as the body and blood of Christ. The practice of kneeling had been suspended during the Paschal season; now the practice of kneeling is resumed. On the Monday following the Feast, the Divine Liturgy is conducted in commemoration ofthe All-holy and Life-creating and All-powerful Spirit, Who is God, and One ofthe Trinity, and of one honor and one essence and one glory with the Father and the Son. The Feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit is known as Green Sunday, since the Eastern Church retains the ancient Jewish tradition of the Feast of Weeks, the Jewish Pentecost, of decorating the Temple and Synagogues with greens as part ofthe celebration ofthis early harvest festival.

9 METROPOLITAN STEFAN'S CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GRADUATES Christ is Risen! One of my favorite passages from the Bible is the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus coming across a stranger who explains to them the meaning of the Scriptures. These disciples only came to recognize the Risen Christ in the breaking of the bread. They go on to share how their hearts were aflame with passion as they listened to the,, i,,,, Risen Christ explaining to them the meaning of all that had happened. This is my prayer and my hope for you as you graduate this year. May your heart be ablaze with love for God and for understanding all that has happened in your life. You have been successful with the help of the!,, Holy Spirit. You have accomplished yet another challenge because you were enabled to do so by a loving and caring God who desires the best for you. God provided from His abundance through meaningful people in your life. 12 Looking East: The Green Feast This article was published in the May 31, 2009 edition of The Tidings, the official newspaper of the Archdiocese oflos Angeles. by Gabriel Meyer By late spring, most of us, at least in Southern California, have our sights on summer. When I think of the great feast of Pentecost, commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles (Acts chapter 2), celebrated this year on May 31, these associations invariably come to mind: the Church's cycle ofthe feast ofredemption, begun during Holy Week and Easter, brought to completion at Pentecost, and nature around us brought from the promise of spring into the full bloom of summer. For many Eastern Catholics, this rich dialogue between liturgy and creation plays out in a very literal way in the Feast of Pentecost --- as it did in the feast's own origins in ancient Jewish practice. Pentecost (Greek for "50 days") capped the Passover "season" with a feast honoring the giving ofthe Torah on Sinai; but the Jewish feast originally was an agricultural feast, giving thanks for the first-fruits ofthe earth and the new harvest (Ex. 23: 16, Lev. 23:10-21; Num. 28:26; Dt. 16:9-12). Similarly, in many Eastern Christian customs related to Pentecost, harvest themes abound: green branches, grasses and wild flowers are brought to decorate the church on the feast, sometimes homes as well --- symbolizing the life-giving power of the Spirit who renews, revives and brings all things, even the world of nature, to fruition. Even the vestments of priests and deacons in the East are green, not red as in western practice. But the Christian East's particular approach to the Pentecost reality does not stop with a little greenery. Perhaps the most unique feature of Pentecost in the Byzantine tradition has to do with the so-called "Kneeling Vespers," which, in many churches, is celebrated directly after the Sunday Liturgy (or Eucharist). This service includes a special set of three prayers, attributed to St. Basil the Great, which priest and congregation pray on their knees. In our tradition, this service marks the first time since Holy Week that we have "bowed the knee" in a liturgical service. (Kneeling is rare in Byzantine practice; prayer is traditionally said standin1w The iqy of the resurrection, in many Eastern traditions, rules out penitential gestures such as kneeling and fasting for the 50 dayj.jpentecost) of the Easter season. Far from an invitation to personal introspection, these "kneeling" prayers are a proper Pentecostal call to action on a universal scale - the prayers ofa newly empowered Church, embracing its all-encompassing mission of mercy and enlightenment -- not only to the living, but even to the dead. If Eastern Christian theology finds rich expression in its hymns and prayers, the theology of the Christian East takes its clearest and most distinctive form in iconography. While space permits no more than a few words on a vast topic, the Pentecost icon ofthe "Descent ofthe Holy Spirit" shows the Twelve Apostles around a semicircular table above which the radiant "sun" of the Holy Spirit disperses rays or tongues of fire above their heads. An empty seat or "throne" at the head ofthe table symbolizes the invisible presence of Christ in their midst; in some icons, an altar makes the eucharistic connection even clearer. Mysteriously, in the middle ofthe icon, a dark cavern opens in which an old man, crowned, cradles a scroll. While there are a number of possible interpretations of this figure, usually called Cosmos, I prefer the notion that the "Cosmos" figure represents not only the unredeemed human world, but also the "cosmos" of nature, the "new creation" that is transfigured along with us in the Redemption made perfect in Pentecost. All of which brings us back to summer, to nature in full bloom --- not an unworthy "icon" of Pentecost, surely, or of our own Pentecostal journey to spiritual and human fruition in the care of that Spirit who, as the great Byzantine hymn says, is "the Treas~!)' ofblessings, present in all places, filling all things." Award-winning Catholic journalist Gabriel Meyer has covered Church issues in the Middle East. Africa and the Balkans. He is a member ofst. Andrew Russian Greek-Catholic Church in El Segumjo. "Looking East" will appear periodically in The Tidings. The Tidings is the weekly newspaper ofthe Los Angeles Archdiocese. The Feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit

13 The festival of Pentecost has its roots in the Old Testament. It began as a harvest feast and later added the giving of the Law of Moses on Mount Sinai as the "harvest" of the Old Covenant. Our Christian Feast of Pentecost is celebrated on the fiftieth day after the Resurrection of Christ. On this feast the Descent ofthe Holy Spirit effected a New Covenant. It was precisely this Descent of the Spirit, which revealed to the world the knowledge ofthe mystery ofthe Holy Trinity, consubstantial, undivided and yet distinct. It was the fulfillment ofthe revelation concerning the Persons ofthe one God as three. The Icon of Pentecost is a marked contrast with the biblical description ofthe Descent of the Spirit. The Book of Acts ofthe Apostles (2:2) records that "suddenly from up in the sky there came a noise, like a strong, driving wind which was heard all through the house where they were seated." In contrast, the Icon is characterized by serenity and composure. The postures of the Apostles reveal serenity. All of them are seated, some gesturing as if in subdued conversation with one another. The gift of the Holy Spirit remains the inner life of grace. The event of Pentecost forms the Church and is the inauguration of the Kingdom of God. The twelve Apostles form a semi-circle to express the unity of the Mystical Body of Christ, the Church. They are pictured in an inverse perspective--their figures grow larger as they recede into the background. The center place, which is unoccupied, is reserved for Christ, the invisible head of the Church. Some ancient icons symbolize Christ's invisible presence with an altar, the throne ofhis glory. The Evangelists are shown holding books; another has a scroll as a sign of having received the gift of teaching. Above the semi-circle, beyond the edge of the panel, there is a symbol of heaven from which rays or tongues of fire descend. This is a sign both of the sanctification of the Apostles and Disciples, and of their baptism with the Holy Spirit and fire. The world, to which the Apostles would preach, is represented at the bottom ofthe Icon by one symbolic figure ofa king. He is known as "Cosmos" as he represents the whole world enveloped by sin. He sits in a dark place since the whole world had formerly been without the light of faith. He is bent over to show he was made old by the sin ofadam. Through the power of the Holy Spirit the twelve Apostles brought light to the whole world by their teaching. The Icon of the Descent of the Holy Spirit represents the great event of sanctification, which took place in the apostolic community. At the same time, it is an expression of the sanctification of our lives in the Church by the Holy Spirit Who is constantly glorified: "Treasury ofblessings and Giver oflife."
