2 SIXEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST September 4, 2016 TROPAR: You have destroyed Death by Your cross; You opened Paradise to the thief. The sorrow of the women You turned to joy. You commanded Your Apostles to proclaim to all: Christ our God has arisen, granting great mercy to the world. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit now and forever and ever. Amen. KONDAK: No longer can the might of Death rule over men; Christ has come, destroying and crushing its power. The Abyss is now in chains. The Prophets, with joy, unite in proclaiming: The Savior has appeared, saying to those who believe: Come forth, Faithful, to the resurrection. PROKIMEN: May the Lord give strength to His people; may the Lord bless His people with peace. Verse: Give the Lord, you sons of God, give the Lord glory and power. A reading from St. Paul's First Epistle to the Corintians (6:1-10) Brethren, as fellow-workers with you, we beg you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For it says: "At a favorable time I heard you, and on the day of salvation I helped you." The favorable time is now; the day of salvation is now. In order for our ministry to be blameless we do not want to offend anyone in anyway. In every way we try to present ourselves as God's ministers with great patience, in afflictions, in trouble, in distress, under beatings, in imprisonment, riots, in hardships, in fasting, in kindness, in a holy spirit, with unaffected love, speaking truthfully, in the power of God, wielding the weapons of justice to the right and to the left, in honor or dishonor, in blame or praise, as impostors yet truthful, as unknowing yet known, as dying yet we are alive, punished yet not killed, afflicted yet always rejoicing, poor yet enriching many, having nothing yet possessing everything. 3 GOSPEL Matthew 25:14-30 At that Time Jesus told this parable, For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents. In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents. But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master s money. After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them. Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents. His master said to him, Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master. And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents. His master said to him, Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master. Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed; so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours. But his master replied, You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents. For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. COMMUNION VERSE: Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise Him in the highest. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Olyphant, PA as a result there will be no Divine Liturgy on Saturday, October 15 at Transfiguration of Our Lord Church or Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Plymouth, in order to enable Father Walter and All Parishioners to attend Services. Please mark

6 The Liturgical Year (Begins September 1) HOLY DAYS The ecclesiastical year, which according to Byzantine practice begins on the first of September, is divided between movable and immovable or fixed holy days. The movable holy days are determined by the date of Pascha (Easter) - the most important of all feast days and Central Feast of the Liturgical Year - which is in a class by itself. The determination of the date of Easter was definitively regulated by the decision of the First Ecumenical Synod, held in Nicaea (325). Next in importance to Easter are the "twelve great feasts," of which three are movable. Eight of these feasts are devoted to Christ and four to the Virgin Mary. There are also a number of feast days of varying importance, most of which commemorate the more popular saints. The "Twelve Major Feast Days," as they occur in chronological order after September 1, are as follows: The Nativity of the Virgin Mary (September 8) The Elevation of the Life-giving Cross (September 14) The Presentation of the Virgin Mary in the Temple (November 21) Christmas (December 25) Epiphany (January 6) The Presentation of Christ in the Temple (February 2) The Annunciation (March 25) Palm Sunday (the Sunday before Easter) The Ascension (40 days after Easter) Pentecost (50 days after Easter) The Transfiguration (August 6) The Dormition of the Theotokos (August 15)

7 Fast Days and Fast Periods Four main fast periods are included in the ecclesiastical year. They are: The Great Fast (Lent)--beginning on a Monday 7 weeks before Pascha. Fast of the Apostles--varying in length from 1 to 6 weeks; it begins on a Monday, 8 days after Pentecost, and ends on June 28--the eve of the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. Fast of the Dormition of the Theotokos Mary--August 1 to 14. Philips Fast--lasting 40 days, from November 15 to December 24, so named because the fast begins the day following the Feast Day of St. Philip. Individual fast days include the feast of the Elevation of the Holy Cross (September 14), the Beheading of St. John the Baptist (August 29), and the eve of Epiphany (January 5), as well as all Wednesdays and Fridays. There is no fasting, however, between Christmas and Epiphany, during the tenth week before Pascha, the week after Pascha because the whole week is Pascha, and the week after Pentecost. Although the term fast, denotes total abstinence from food or drink, fasting as practiced in the Church means abstinence from meat, fish, dairy products, olive oil, and wine. Total abstinence is reserved for the fast of several hours duration preceding Holy Communion. The rules for fasting prescribed by the holy canons are quite rigid; and, although they are still observed in the monasteries and by the very devout, most Catholics today find it difficult to uphold the traditional practice for the length of time prescribed. Nevertheless, any deviation from the norm is permitted only following consultation with one's spiritual father or with the prior approval of the local hierarchy. (to be continued )
