Seminary Day, which will be held on Sunday, July 28th at St. Nicholas Grove in Minersville, will be the 79 h observance of this social which was begun in the 930's to raise funds for. our seminary_ All parishioners are welcome to come to the meeting to give their ideas and suggestions as the planning begins for this traditional celebration of faith and ethnic heritage. 'fhe funds raised by this Deanery project, are credited towards each parish's seminary assessment on a prorated basis. Therefore the more chances our parish sells and the more ads our parish solicits, the greater seminary credit our parish receives. 6 A Brief History of Memorial Day Memorial Day was origially knovro as Decoration Day because it was a tine set aside to honor the nation's Civil \Var dead b)' decorating their graves. t was first widely observed on Ma)' 30, 868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Anny of the Republic, an organization of former sailors and soldiers. On May 5, 868, l~ogan declared in Geeral Order No. that: The 30th of May, 868, is designated for the purpose of strewing u:ith flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of cor;rades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. n this observance no form o.f ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their ou n way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit. During the first celebration of Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery. This l 868 celebration was inspired by local observances of the day in several tov.ns throughout Alnerica that had taken place in the three years since the Civil War. n fact, several Northern and Southern cities clain to be the birthplace of Memorial Day, including Columbus, Miss.; Maco, Ga.; Richmond, Va.; Boalsburg, Pa.; and Carbondale, ll. n 966, the federal government, under the direction of President Lyndon Johnson, declared Waterloo, N.Y., the official birthplace of Memorial Day.
