4 THE PROTECTION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD. One of the favorite Holy Days in the Ukrainian Church, is to be found on the Church Calendar on October 1 st. It commemorates the appearance of the Mother of God in Constantinople in the 10 th century. It is recorded in the life of St. Andrew, known as the Fool for Christ. St. Andrew and St. Epiphanius were in church for services when they saw the Mother of God approach the altar, supported by St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist. She knelt and prayed with tears in her eyes. Then she took the veil she was wearing and extended it over her arms as a sign of protection. There are many icons depicting this event, but she is always depicted with the veil over her arms as a sign that she will always protect us. She is never alone but always with Christ. Today, with her veil (omophor) she stands in our church along with the hosts of saints and she is always ready to hear our prayers of need and to take them to the Throne of God. We pray: Remember us in your prayers, O Lady, Virgin

6 BRINGING THE LORD TO OTHERS Inviting friends to our Church? This is a generous way of sharing your faith with others! Maybe it s a close friend or neighbor; a co-worker or some acquaintance. Your Roman Catholic visitor may expect to receive communion. It is good to let them know that it is quite proper to do so, if in their own Church they are capable of the same. But, it may be worthwhile to advise them that they are not going to receive in their hands - as our way of distributing the Body and Blood of Christ under both species is done with a spoon. Be sure to remind them to open their mouth wide; tilt their head back; let the priest drop the Holy Eucharist into their mouth (without touching the spoon); and they should not say Amen or anything else! They should be encouraged to follow (and sing) along using the books available - and not get lost in private prayer or their rosary - since the Divine Liturgy IS the public prayer of the Church and supersedes any other devotion. Protestant and unbaptized friends may need to be gently told of our belief in the real Presence of the Eucharist, and the qualifying necessity of being baptized and chrismated (confirmed) to approach the Holy Mysteries. Orthodox faithful may be admitted to Holy Communion, since their belief is the same as ours, however their sensitivities over communion with a jurisdiction or hierarchy are to be respected.
