6 The Office of Christian Burial The Funeral Services of the Byzantine Ukrainian Rite are deeply impressive, yet truly meaningful and uplifting. As they poetically accent the mystical aspects of death and the resurrection, they also bring our hearts and minds in touch with the reassuring hope that God is merciful. In part, this is revealed when the solemn mood of the music is frequently interrupted by triumphal chords to symbolize that the death of every Christian "is swallowed up in victory" (1 Cor. 15:54). As a result, sorrow is lessened when seen through the light of the expectation of heavenly bliss; and the sadness of inevitable departure is alleviated by prayer, which is both encouraging and supportive. The body of the Christian-alive or dead-is the temple of the Living God: it is laid to rest in the grave as a candidate for resurrection. In the primitive Church, the Service of the Dead was called the "Eucharistic Prayer," or "Prayer of Thanksgiving." Even now, it consists mainly in psalmody and praise: God is exalted for having delivered the deceased from the afflictions of this world, for they are now going to a place of repose and happiness where He Himself will receive them. Hence Christian mourning is tinged with joy. Christian burial places are called cemeteries, from the Greek and Latin words for "sleeping-places." For the Christian, death is but a sleep, and bodies laid to rest in a cemetery are merely sleeping, in the expectation of resurrection. At the time of death, all men are burdened with traces of frailty and corruption. That is why we ask God to deal with them according to His mercy, to pardon their failures for "there is no man who lives and does not sin." Our prayers help the dead because of their union with us in Christ the Head: we are all members of the Mystical Body. In his commentary on the Second Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians, St. John Chrysostom explains: "The dead are not so much to be lamented as helped with prayers, supplications, alms and offerings. Such things were not designed in vain, nor is it without reason that, in the celebration of the Holy Mysteries, we mention the dead, interceding for them with the Lamb who is slain to take away the sins of the world. From all this, some consolation will go up to them. Neither again is it in vain that the priest, standing at the altar during the celebration of the Divine Mysteries, cries out: 'We offer You this sacrifice for all who are asleep in

7 Christ and all who make commemorations in their honor...let us then not grow weary of helping them and praying for them.'" Another purpose of the Funeral Service is to lead the living to virtue and holiness by reminding them of death and preparing them for it. Most of the hymns point out that earthly comforts, beauty, riches, health and power are God-given favors that should help us get ready for better and more permanent treasures still to come. A moderate sorrow expressed at the loss of a relative or friend is a natural feeling consistent with Christian joy and faith, but we should not grieve as do those who have no hope. In the following Funeral Services two main themes are beautifully interwoven into a. most expressive ritual: the awesome judgment of God; and the resurrection to life eternal. The reality of judgment after death urges us to sincere, confident prayer for the departed soul, while the vision of immortality soothes our sorrow at this time of death. Thus we fulfill the counsel of St. Paul: "Brethren, we want you to be quite certain about those who are asleep (dead), to make sure that you do not grieve about them as those people who have no hope." (1 Thess. 4: 13). In the early days of Christianity, funeral services were an all night vigil of prayer. They ended about dawn with the subsequent burial of the deceased. Today we use but a small segment of those ancient rites. Our modem Wake Service is called the P ARAST AS or GREAT P ANAKHYDA. Panakhyda is literally translated from the Greek as All-night Services. Parastas is translated as a Standing Service, denoting the ancient custom of standing to pray. There is a three-way dialogue within the structure of the Wake Service or Parastas in the Funeral Service of the Church. In some prayers we, the faithful, pray and intercede for a merciful judgment for the deceased; in other prayers it is the deceased admitting to the 'weakness of sin during life and now beseeching forgiveness and acceptance into everlasting life; in still other prayers we hear the voice of Christ as the Merciful Judge. Spiritual writers throughout the ages have attested to the tremendous value of prayers for the dead. In our times, Pope John XXIII wrote in his JOURNAL OF A SOUL: "To remember the dead in prayer gives me courage and joy in confident hope of joining them all again in the everlasting glory of heaven." 8 METROPOLITAN STEFAN'S REFELCTION FOR 2N SUNDAY OF GREAT FAST Our journey in Great Fast has begun. We have focused ourselves on devoting greater time for prayer and meditation, and have resolved to fast and to offer something extra of ourselves in assisting others in need. Throughout the many parables, we learn of Jesus' immense mercy. Jesus heals the sick and possessed. Jesus forgives the sinners. You and I can easily find ourselves amidst the sick, the possessed, and the sinners. Admitting that we have offended God, ourselves and others is needed before we can receive true forgiveness and healing. You will recall that those who asked Jesus for help were honest with themselves as to their condition. You and I need to be honest with ourselves about our weaknesses. Is there some anger, bad thoughts, resentment, and so on which we have found difficult to let go? Are there some personal failings which we cdntinue to focus on, be it our own or by others? Whatever it is which possesses us, causes sickness and sinfulness, resolve to surrender it at the feet of Jesus Christ. Jesus is ready to forgive. Jesus is ready to heal. Are you and I ready to approach Jesus Christ with the honesty and readiness needed to be forgiven and to be healed this Great Fast? 10 BISHOPS ENCOURAGE RESTORATION OF FUNERAL RITES FOR OUR FAITHFUL In their pastoral letter for the Great Fast issued in February, 2007, our Ukrainian Catholic hierarchy asked for the restoration of our proper funeral services to honor our dearly departed. They stated: We honor our beloved dead by showing them the greatest respect; by doing the best we can to honor them. It is in conjunction with this desire that we, the Ukrainian Catholic bishops of the United States, take this opportunity to reclaim our ancient heritage. Until fairly recently, funerals - like weddings - stood on their own. The beauty of the funeral liturgy, which we call Parastas, was allowed to shine forth as a liturgy in its own right and not as a mere adjunct to the Divine Liturgy. A return to this venerable tradition would show the greatest honor to our beloved dead; how better could we honor them than by using the ancient rite, whose prayers were offered for their ancestors from time immemorial? This is not to discount the importance of the Divine Liturgy; far from it.' Rather, the Divine Liturgy would be reserved for other significant gatherings - such as the fortieth-day commemorations which, though so full of meaning, have fallen into disuse in some places. And what better time to begin to implement such a change than during the Great Fast, when we do not normally celebrate Divine Liturgy during the week? For this reason, beginning with this Great Fast, we encourage the celebration of the Parastas as the funeral liturgy of our Church within the United States. Accordingly, in keeping with this liturgical renewal, during the Great Fast, we will follow this directive of our bishops for all of our church funeral services. Funeral Services in the Eastern Church The funeral service in the Eastern Church, although not considered as specifically sacramental, belongs among the special liturgical rites of the People of God. The Church has a particular sacramental service for the consecration of human suffering, and special prayers for the departure of the soul from the body in death. When a person dies, the Church serves a special vigil over the lifeless body, called traditionally the parastas or panakhyda, both of which mean a "watch" or an "all-night vigil." The funeral vigil has the basic form of matins. It begins with the normal Trisagion Prl!yers and the chanting of Psahn 91, followed by the special Great Litany for the dead. Alleluia replaces God is the Lord, as in Great Lent, and leads into the singing of the funeral troparion. The troparion and the kontakion of the dead, as all hymns of the funeral vigil, meditate on the tragedy of death and the mercy of God, and petition eternal life for the person who is "fallen asleep." Thou only Creator Who with wisdom profound mercifully orderest all things, and givest unto all that which is useful, give rest, 0 Lord, to the soul of Thy servant who has fallen asleep, for he has placed his trust in Thee, our Maker and Fashioner and our God (Troparion). With the saints give rest. 0 Christ, to the soul of Thy servant where sickness and sorrow are no more, neither sighing, b,;t life everlasting (Kontakion). Psalm 119, the verbal icon of the righteous man who has total trust in God and total devotion and love for his Divine Law -- the verbal icon of Jesus Christ --is chanted over the dy.parted, with its praises and supplications for life in God. It is this same psalm which is chanted over the tomb of Christ on Great Friday. It is the psahn which sings of the victory of righteousness and life over wickedness and death. My soul cleaves to the dust, give me life according to Thy word. (1 19:25)

11 Turn my eyes from looking at vanities; and give me life in Thy wcrys. (I 19:37) Behold, I longfor Thy precepts; in Thy righteousness give me life. (I 19:40) Thy testimonies are righteousness forever; give me understanding that 1 may live. (119: 144) Plead my cause, and redeem me; give me life according to Thy promise. (119: 154) This entire psalm together with the verses and prayers that go with it, the canon hymns of the service, and the special funeral songs of St John of Damascus all are a meditation on life and death. They are, in the context of the new life of the Risen Christ who reigns in the Church, a lesson of serious instruction for those who are immune to the full tragedy of sin and its "wages" which are death. Sometimes men criticize the funeral vigil for its supposed morbidity and gloom; they say that there should be more words of resurrection and life. Yet the vigil itself is not the Church's "fmal word" about death. It is simply the solemn contemplation upon death's tragic character, its horrid reality and its power as that of sin and alienation from God. The realization of these facts, which particularly in the modem age is so strikingly absent, is the absolute condition for the full appreciation and celebration of the victorious resurrection of Christ and his gracious gift of eternal life to mankind. Without such a preparatory meditation on death, it is doubtful whether the Christian Gospel of Life can be understandable at all. Thus it is not at all ironic that the same Saint John of Damascus who wrote the joyful canon sung by the Church on Easter Night is also the author of the Church's songs of death, which are indeed unyielding in their gravity and uncompromising in their bluntness and realism about the inevitable fact of the final fate of fallen human existence. What earthly sweetness remains unmixed with grief? What glory stands immutable on the earth? All things are but feeble shadows, all things are most deluding dreams, yet one moment only, and death shall supplant them all. But in the light of Thy countenance, 0 Christ, and in the sweetness of Thy beauty, give rest to him whom Thou hast chosen, for as much as Thou lovest mankind. I weep and lament when I think upon death, and behold our beauty created in the likeness of God lying in the tomb disfigured, bereft of glory and form. 0 the marvel of it! What is this mystery concerning us? Why have we been delivered to corruption? Why have we been wedded unto death? Truly, as it is written, by the command of God Who giveth the departed rest (Funeral Hymns). As the funeral service is now normally served, the Beatitudes are chanted after the canon and the hymns of Saint John, with prayer verses inserted between them on behalf of the dead. The epistle reading is from First Thessalonians ( 4: 13-17),. The gospel reading is from Saint John (5:24-30). A sermon is preached and the people are dismissed after giving their "fmal kiss" with the singing of the fmal funeral song: Eternal Memory, Vichnaya Pamyat It has to be noted here that this song, contrary to the common understanding of it, is the supplication that God would remember the dead, for in the Bible it is God's "eternal memory" which keeps man alive. Sheol or Hades or the Pit, the biblical realm of the dead also called Abaddon, is the condition of forsakenness and forgottenness by God. It is the situation of non-life since in such a condition no one can praise the Lord; and the praise of the Lord is the only content and purpose of man's life; it is the very reason for his existence. Thus, this most famous and final of the funeral hymns of the Eastern church is the prayer that the departed be eternally alive in the "eternal rest" of the "eternal memory" of God -- all of which is made possible and actual by the resurrection of Jesus Christ which is the destruction of the Pit of Death by the splendor of Divine Righteousness and Life (seeps 88; Hos 13:14; 1 Cori 15; Eph 4:9; Phi/2:5-11; 1 Pet 3).

13 Deanery Lenten Services: Deanery Lenten Services has begun. Our deanery prays the Stations of the Cross at a different parish each week. This long-time tradition within our deanery has provided both spiritual and social benefits to the clergy and faithful who participate. I encourage all of you to join the faithful of all our parishes in making these services a part of your Lenten journey. This Sunday, March 4th Lenten Devotions will be held at St. John the Baptist Church, Maizeville, PA. at 3:00 PM. Immediately after services a brief social will be held for all in attendance. Plan now to join us. Confession: Every catholic is required to receive the Sacrament of Penance during the Lenten/Easter season. In order to give you ample opportunity to fulfill this obligation, I will hear confessions every Saturday during lent from 11 :00 AM to Noon at SS. Peter & Paul. Also, visiting priests will be in Assumption B.V.M. Church, Centralia on Monday, March 26th, from 6:00PM to 7:00 PM for confessions, and at SS. During this time we are encouraged to focus upon the salvation of our souls, each one looking inwardly in order to measure ourselves in the light of Jesus Christ. During this time we are encouraged to "pray, fast and do good works" each according to their own ability. As such, our church provides additional opportunities to encounter the Lord. A special liturgical schedule has been prepared to enable us to make the best use of this forty-day period. Lenten Hours are prayed at 8:00AM Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Stations of the Cross are celebrated at 6:00 PM on Tuesday evenings. The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is sung on Wednesday and Friday evenings at 6:00 PM. Our deceased loved ones are remembered at Sorokousty Services on Saturday mornings immediately after 8:00AM Divine Liturgy in Mt. Carmel and on Sunday mornings immediately after 11:00 AM Divine Liturgy in Centralia. Also, please remember our Deanery prays the Stations of the Cross in a different parish each Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM.
