2 PAROCHIAL VICAR S LETTER Over the past number of months we have been looking at the First Commandment, the most important commandment in the Law. All too o en people do not realize they are viola ng the First Commandment simply because they are not worshipping some false god or because they have not directly denied their faith in the one true God. However, as we have seen, there are many ways we can violate this commandment. Today I would like to look at what is ul mately at the root of why anyone would break this commandment: pride. When Satan wandered into the Garden, he was able to deceive Eve with a lie that was very subtle. He told her that if she ate the forbidden fruit she would be like God. Of course, she was already made in the image and likeness of God, but the lie was even more subtle than this. In telling Eve God knew the moment she ate the fruit she would be like God, knowing good and evil, she believed God did not truly love her, God did not want the very best for her. Obviously, God did not want her to eat the fruit because He did not want her to have this knowledge, therefore, God was holding something back and not being forthright. Once the lie was accepted and Eve thought God was not loving His human creatures fully, she decided she would have to take control of ma ers herself. A er all, if God cannot be trusted, who can you trust? Ul mately, only yourself. I think we all know the horrible error in this kind of thinking because we have enough experience in demonstra ng ourselves to be untrustworthy, but Eve did not have this experience when she made her decision. It is not wan ng to be like God that is the problem; the problem is wan ng to be God. Most people would not claim to desire to be God in the largest sense, they just want to be their own god, be the god of their own life. I suspect most people reading this would not even want to make such a claim. But when we try to be in control rather than allowing God to be in control, are we not trying to take His place? When we try to decide for ourselves what is right or wrong rather than accep ng what God has revealed through the Church, are we not making ourselves God? Just think about this for a moment. If I can determine what is morally acceptable or unacceptable without reference to anything objec ve, then I have also just decided that God is incorrect. In fact, have I not decided, as Eve did, that God does not want what is best for me? God does not truly love me? It must be that God is keeping the truth from me and trying to keep me down. The presenta on has changed, but the lie remains the same. Satan is a master of deceit. He invented lies; Jesus calls Him the Father of lies because he was the first to lie. He lied to himself and bought his own lie. It worked so well that the most intelligent creature God made was swayed by his own deceit. A third of the angels were fooled as well, so it should not be too surprising that our first parents, who were far less intelligent than the angels, would fall for the same lie. Our problem is that we think that happened once, in the Garden, but it is not happening anymore. Even worse, many think what is in the Bible is just a myth, so we do not really have to believe it. If something worked on the angels, on the first human persons, and on countless people over the centuries, doesn t it make sense he is just going to keep coming back to the same lie? Sure, he has changed the details, but as we saw a couple paragraphs ago, the essence of the lie is the same. Un l we choose God and His truth we are making ourselves into li le gods, the god of my own life. Our pride makes it difficult to be dependent on God. Our pride makes it difficult to accept truths that are not socially acceptable. Our pride makes it difficult for us to be different from everyone else. Therefore, our pride makes us willing to reject God s revealed truths and subs tute something else in their place. In other words, our pride makes us want to be like God; no, our pride makes us want to be God. Look around and see what happens when people reject God and make themselves gods. It leads to a rejec on of objec ve truth regarding doctrines, but especially regarding morality. It ul mately reduces to moral rela vism where every person can decide for himself or herself what is right and wrong. Another way of sta ng that is everyone can decide what is good and evil. Sound familiar? God does not want you to eat the fruit from that tree because He does not want you to have that knowledge, He does not want what is best for you. It is be er to not trust Him and trust in yourself instead. You will be like God. There is only one God and there is only one objec ve truth that is true for every person on the face of the earth. The only two op ons are 1) there is only one God, or 2) every person has his or her own god, his or her own truth, his or her own morality. This is why God put the First Commandment first; if we do not accept the First Commandment, none of the others ma er, they are all rela ve and only ma er if you choose to make them ma er. Pray for humility and look closely at how the vile creature may have slithered into your life with his primordial lie that plays on our pride: you will be like God. Reject his lies and believe firmly and absolutely in the First Commandment; everything else is dependent on this truth. 2

PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION "...this Sacrament, in as much as it contains our Lord, is worthy of adora on and... we must adore him. For truly, since it is Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ is God, who will not adore him, I beg you, as well there as in heaven, since it is wri en 'I will worship the Lord God and only him will I serve' (Ma hew 4:10). For our Lord wants to be adored wherever he is. Thus he was adored on the cross by the thief (Luke 23:42), walking in Jerusalem among the people who cried out, 'Hosanna' (Ma hew 21:9) and in the crib by the three kings (Ma hew 2:11). He is hidden in the Eucharist, but that does not prevent him from being adored, for thus the kings adored him, hidden and wrapped in swaddling clothes." ~ St. Francis de Sales Eucharis c Adora on Contact Be y Kreuter If you are s ll looking for a quiet place to pray this Lent, the Eucharis c Adora on Chapel at the Church of St. Raphael can offer that space. 7 SPOTLIGHT EVENTS SAINT OF THE DAY - SAINT JULIE BILLIART Marie Rose Julie Billiart was born in France in 1751, the daughter of fairly prosperous parents who ran a small shop and farmed some land. In 1767 the family lost its money and Julie had to take on heavy manual labor to help them survive. When she was fourteen, she made a private vow of chas ty. She also taught the catechism to young children and farm laborers in her parish and visited the sick when she was not working. Julie s life changed drama cally when she was in her early twen es. Her family was at home together when someone fired a shot through the window at her father. She was so frightened that she developed a nervous paralysis that prevented her from walking and caused her great pain. She con nued to serve the Lord but in a new way, being sought out for spiritual advice by a wide variety of people. In 1803, Julie together with another woman, Françoise Blin de Bourdon and a priest, Father Joseph Varin founded a new religious congrega on known as the Ins tute of Notre Dame. It was devoted to Chris an educa on, the instruc on of the poor and the training of teachers. The next year, Julie was healed a er a parish mission in their city. One of the priests organized a novena to the Sacred Heart to pray for Julie s recovery; during it he spoke to her privately, saying, If you have faith, Mother, take a step in honor of the Sacred Heart. Julie found she was able to walk, something she had not done for twenty-two years. A er her recovery she helped the Fathers in their mission work, worked for the re-chris aniza on of the country following the disastrous effects of the French Revolu on, and expanded the scope of the Sisters to educa on of the wealthy as well as the poor. From then on, she was constantly on the road, opening schools in nineteen centers in France and Belgium. She ran into many obstacles, but her constant happiness, good sense of humor and constant trust in God s providence helped win people over. While she wanted students to get a good educa on, her main concern was for the good of their souls. To her Sisters, she wrote, You are not here just to train children in science, in literature, in handiwork. What ma ers is the care of souls pu ng children in the way of salva on. She also said, Our aim in teaching is to form good Chris ans who know how to manage their household, their family, their affairs. She also insisted on the sisters maintaining a deep prayer life. She wrote, Ours is one of the most difficult of voca ons because we must live an interior life in the midst of external work. But if the interior life were lost, our congrega on would not last, or if it did live on it would only be an outward life by uniformity of customs If in the midst of their occupa ons they do not keep their hearts united to our Lord, all [the Sisters] will do will come to nothing. A young Sister reported that Julie showed them how we might live alone with God, even in the midst of a large class of children. Julie passed away on April 8, Today, the congrega on that Julie helped found now known as the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur (not to be confused with the School Sisters of Notre Dame) serve in sixteen na ons on five con nents. Saint Julie Billiart, pray for us!
