1 Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 18, 2016 Readings: Ex 32:7-11, 13-14; Lk 15:1-32 DEACON S SPEAKIN Dear Friends, One way to prevent the temptation to be self-serving is to develop a habit of praying always. St. Paul tells us in Thessalonians, Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God... retain what is good. Refrain from every kind of evil. It is a strong prayer life and faith in God that sustains us during life s difficult times. Even if our liturgical prayer is very rich and satisfying and that is the main goal of our parish we also need our personal, devotional prayer to compliment liturgical prayer. If the only time of the week we think about God is during Sunday Mass, it will be quite difficult, if not impossible, to understand that our daily decisions are really expressions of our commitment to be disciples of Jesus. I believe also that our deeds of service outside the walls of our chapel are indeed forms of prayer and keep us mindful that this world is not just about us. Since Vatican II there has been something of a negative attitude about devotional prayer. Some of this thinking was the result of poor devotions. It s a historical fact that not all devotions were good ones. The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy gives criteria for good devotional prayer. It should help to draw us into the various liturgical seasons; it should lead us to a better celebration of liturgy and help us to live liturgy in our daily lives. One sure way to accomplish this is to prepare for liturgy ahead of Sunday, especially by reflecting on the readings. It might be helpful to pray the response to the psalm and make it a mantra that is recited throughout the week. Meals, of course, provide an opportunity for praying always. With time families can find what works best for them. Over time, members will see how more and more of their daily lives are lived with an eye to God. Peace and love, Deacon John Mission Statement Called by Christ, gifted by God and empowered by the Holy Spirit, St. Paul Catholic Newman Center is a parish committed to serving the academic community and all those who choose to be part of our parish family.

We are accepting donations for the "Cardinals Cupboard". New items (i.e, jewelry, home or outside decor, etc.), homemade canned goods (i.e., jams, jellies, pickles, etc.) or a homemade craft item. Items can be dropped off at the front desk. Thank you for your generosity. Interested artisans please contact Terri VanderDussen at Mercy and the Death Penalty As the issue of the death penalty comes up this election, it is important to remain prayerful and conscious of God s mercy in our own lives and how that translates to others. In his message to a world conference against the death penalty earlier this year, Pope Francis lamented that capital punishment contradicts God s plan for individuals and society, and his merciful justice. As Catholics, we should look to extend to others the loving hands of mercy and redemption that God has so lovingly extended to us. Explore the church s teaching on the death penalty and why the California Bishops are urging support for Prop 62 at Peace & Social Justice Ministry The Women's Prison Ministry is an on-going effort to provide Christmas gift bags to women incarcerated at Chowchilla. Please continue to bring your travel-size lotions, shampoos, bath gels, soap, deodorant and toothpaste and deposit them in the bin in the foyer. Also accepted are greeting cards, pencils, pens, tea bags (individually wrapped), flexible emery boards. These small gifts mean so much to these women. I would like to express my gratitude for all that the members do. The holidays are difficult for many and the gift bags give each person an individual moment to smile. That can be priceless here. Thank you all so much. - Megan, from Chowchilla State Prison.
