1 Fifth Sunday of Easter May 3, 2015 Readings: Acts 9:26-31; 1 Jn 3:18-24; Jn 15:1-8 THE DEACON S SPEAKIN Dear friends, In the first letter of John 3:18-24, the author states that those who keep His (Christ) commandments remain in Him and He in them. Another way to remain in the risen Christ is to allow God s words to remain in us, shape us, and help us bear more fruit. This suggests that the Liturgy of the Word during Mass is more than just moral encouragement or the structure in the liturgy that leads us to the Liturgy of the Eucharist. In the proclamation of the Word we are being pruned so that we can remain in Christ. In the proclamation of the Word we open ourselves to being shaped by Christ so that we can bear the fruit of making God s reign present in the world-a world that is redeemed, but also torn by strife and selfishness as we have seen much too vividly in this week s news. The proclamation of the Word helps us to yearn and hunger for the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation that we receive during the Liturgy of the Eucharist God s nourishment for our life journey and the fruitfulness of that journey. Part of our life journey requires that we be willing to be pruned. We must allow God to tend us, so that we can rid ourselves of whatever gets in our way of being faithful disciples. We do this not only by hearing and praying the Word, but in deed and truth (1 John 3:18). This keeps us in right relationship with God and enables us to produce fruit in our own lives which in turn becomes Jesus pruning word for others. Help support an organization which provides free ultrasounds, counseling, prenatal care, parenting classes, diapers, car seats and other supplies to thousands of parents and babies in need the Fresno area every year - help moms and dads make the choice for life! Learn more at Parking Lot Sale Rescheduled We need your support for the Newman Center parking lot sale, which was rained out last week and is now rescheduled for Saturday, May 9. Please bring your donations to the Barstow Avenue parking lot between 6:00am and 7:00am May 9. There will be tables set up where you can sell the items yourself, or we will gladly sell them for you. If you don t have excess belongings to donate, please plan on coming to the sale with family and friends from 7:00am to 11:00am to shop for eclectic treasures and great bargains. 5 Simplifying our Lives Life gets complicated. Sometimes it feels like we re being pulled in a dozen different directions. All we want is some simplicity. Some peace & quiet. Some direction. Newman Center Women's Guild will be having a "Day of Reflection" on Saturday May 30th from 8:30am to 1:00pm in the Cardinal Newman Hall OUR GUIDE: Msgr. Perry Kavookjian, pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Bakersfield All women are invited. Tickets will be on sale May 2, through May 24, after all Masses. Food Recovery Network: Need Volunteers Newman Center volunteers are continuing to provide a hot dinner each Friday to people who live in our community and are food-insecure or homeless. Each week, about 40 children and families attend to eat food that, for the most part, would have otherwise been thrown away. The Sociology Department at Fresno State also sends student volunteers to help prep and cook the fresh food, set up the dining room, serve the meal and clean up afterwards. However, during the summer, the students won t be available, so we could use some additional volunteers, especially from 3:00pm to 5:00pm If you would like to get involved in the Food Recovery Program at Newman Center, please Jeannette Warnert at tjwarnert@sbcglobal.net. Many of those living close to Newman Center have come to rely on the meals we serve. Join us in serving this need.
