1 The Holy Family Of Jesus Mary and Joseph Year C December 30, 2018 Readings: SIR 3:2-6, 12-14; COL 3:12-21; LK 2:41-52 Readings on 1106 DEACON S SPEAKIN Dear sisters and brothers, Families- and all disciples, no matter what their state of life need the guidance of God for how to love well. And this weekend we are reminded that each family member is uniquely called by God (Samuel, first reading), needs both proper autonomy and compassionate care (Luke, gospel) and is invited to develop into a full life that only God can imagine truly (John, second reading). Finding the proper mix of support and challenges is the key to every life-giving relationship. In today s gospel narrative Jesus reply to His mother s question as to why he remained behind is difficult to translate. Our lectionary says, Did you not know that I must be in my Father s house? His parents didn t understand this answer, maybe because He had never before referred to the Temple as His Father s house. It could be better translated as, Did you not know that I must be about my Father s business? The business described is Jesus engaged in listening to the teachers of the Law and asking them questions. He was involved in teaching the teachers the same activity Jesus would be involved in at the end of His life. From Chapter 19:47 on, Jesus is engaged in teaching in the Temple, not only the people, but also the teachers of the Law. This activity, described by Like as teaching in the Temple (19:47, 20:1; 21:37; 2n:53), is the final activity of Jesus life. His life came full circle. Peace and Love, Deacon John P.S. Women s Guild Retreat Consider jumpstarting the New Year by feeding your soul and attending this year s Women s Guild Retreat. It will take place on January 26, 2019 in Cardinal Newman Hall. This is offered by the Newman Center s Marriage Ministry. It is a program of the Healthy Marriage Coalition and will be presented by Cheryl & Dave Belden. The six sessions of Marriage Works will be offered on the evenings of January 8, 15, 22 and February 5, 12, 19 from 6:30pm to 7:30pm in Cardinal Newman Hall. The sessions are offered as a part of the Faith, Family & Friends Family Life section. There is a $60 registration fee for married or engaged couples who wish to attend the series. Those couples already enrolled in Faith, Family & Friends are invited to attend for free as registered FF&F participants.
