1 Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time Year C February 17, 2019 Readings: JER 17:5-8; 1 COR 15:12, 16-20; LK 6:17, Readings on 1211 THE DEACON S SPEAKIN Dear sisters and brothers, Luke s beatitudes are addressed to those who are actually poor and hungry. Unlike Matthew, who spiritualizes them to address the poor in spirit, and to those who hunger for righteousness, Luke has in mind the actual members of the early Christian community, many of whom had to bear the burden of Christian suffering and persecution at that time. Since this was the way the ancient prophets had all been treated, the disciples are positioned here as prophets, as was Jesus himself. There is probably no other gospel that has so many different interpretations. The early fathers of the church saw the beatitudes as the epitome of Christian ethics, while Martin Luther pronounced them as an impossible ideal. What we have is an almost infinite variety of (often self-serving) readings. As an address to the disciples, however, they are surely intended to shape our values and behavior. They must also be understood in the light of the entire Lukan gospel. Standing as they do at the beginning of Jesus public ministry, they emphasize his compassion, and his reaching out to the marginalized of society. This is the ideal he sets in theory and practice for his disciples. The woes in Luke s sermon on the plain have no parallel in Matthew s gospel. They are the exact antitheses to the preceding beatitudes, and actually reinforce them. Those who have complete satisfaction in this world s goods will be excluded from God s kingdom by their own doing. Likewise, those who are content to satisfy only their physical needs in this world will experience a time when God will send a famine to the land, not a famine of food or water, but of hearing the word of God. Concentration on the pleasures of life will lead to tears when the new age comes. The rich tend to become so self-satisfied that they never journey into the depth of their beings. Surrounded with all the conveniences of modern society, we can lose spiritual depth. We need to appreciate the truth of Paul s statement about Jesus: Although he was rich, he became poor for your sake, so that you should become rich through his poverty (2 Cor 8:9). Peace and love, Deacon John
