1 The Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord August 6, 2017 Readings: DN 7:9-10, 13-14; 2 PT 1:16-19; MT 17:1-9 A light appeared from above and everything changed. In the sky there was a great cloud, and the light radiated forth brighter than the sun. There was a thunderous sound, as if the heavens had opened. This is my son whom I love, listen to Him, said the voice. The disciples fell to the ground. Christ then said to them Do not be afraid. This event on Mt. Tabor was a great mystery to the world, the Transfiguration. The Transfiguration was a glimpse or a sign to show Jesus, the Christ, is Divine. It also was a sign that we too will one day shine with that same Divine radiance. We are all made in the Divine Image of God and indeed all of creation the imprint of the Trinity. August 6, 1945 (72 years ago) on the Feast of the Transfiguration, a light appeared from above and everything changed. In the sky there was a great cloud, and the light radiated forth brighter than the sun. There was a thunderous sound, as if the heavens had opened. In an instant 66,000 souls fell to the ground, never to get up again. The city of Hiroshima was obliterated by a single bomb, the A-Bomb. The land was disfigured, irradiated. Over 100,000 ended up perishing from its effects, and those who survived it were changed, bearing the disfiguration in their bodies. Message spoken by US to the world was Be afraid. This disfiguration was anything but Divine Radiance of the Image of God and yet the semi-official report of the test blast in New Mexico earlier in that summer was called Operation Trinity. As a child I would hear the story of how my parents met in 1944, always with the aside, it was war time. They knew each other for one month and married because Dad was shipping out to Pearl Harbor to serve as a dentist in the medical hospital. Mom, an art student at Washington University in Seattle got a job working on blue prints for the Manhattan Project, whatever that was. Last weekend sitting with my Mom, who has Alzheimer s, we were watching the news and she saw the North Korean missile launch and she said, You know I worked on that. I told her she didn t know then what she was working on and she said, I know now! I wouldn t ever do that again! Thanks, Mom, you have prompted me to pray and ask myself these questions: Where do I stand, on Mt. Tabor or Hiroshima? Do I radiate Divine Transfiguration or Human Disfiguration? Do I respond to Do not be afraid or Be Afraid? Looking up they saw only JESUS. Jesus, I believe, help my unbelief. 3 Mission Priest Fr. Emmanuel Adams, a priest from the Catholic Diocese of Ilorin, Nigeria, will be visiting, and celebrating Mass this weekend, August 5-6. His appeal includes aid for various ministries such as the education and support of seminarians, religious novices and lay catechists; for the work of religious communities in education, health care and social services; for communication and transportation needs and for disaster and emergency relief when necessary. A collection will be taken this weekend for his mission. Music Musings This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. While this celebration typically falls on a weekday, this year the feast trumps the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. With that, we encounter readings that we typically may only hear during Lent. Our Preparation song today includes a hymn text by Sylvia Dunstan, a gifted text-author who tragically died of cancer at a young age. David Haas paired her text with the traditional and well-known French hymn tune PICARDY. Take a moment and notice the beginning of each verse - "Transform us, as you transfigured." In what ways is Christ inviting us to some sort of transformation? In what ways is Christ inviting you to some sort of transformation? The Transfiguration, then, becomes more than an event, as it requires transformation and a call to action. It is not surprising that the text is full of action verbs, such as "lead," "search," and "lift." Interested in Music Ministry? Join us for dinner and rehearsal on Thursday, August 10 at 6pm in the Chapel. All are welcome! a Save the Date This October marks the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, a landmark event for Christianity and for European culture and life. Negro Memorial Lecture here in our Chapel at 7:00pm that evening on the topic "The Reformation at 500". Further details will be forthcoming. Please save the date for these collaborative events in the spirit of our patron Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman and our founding pastor Father Sergio Negro. Both of these men, in different ages, encouraged the spirit of respectful dialog between religious faith and academic study, between religion and the modern world. Don't miss these events! Hospital Ministry in the Fresno Area Since there are no Catholic priests on the pastoral care staff of local hospitals, except St. Agnes Medical Center, Catholics needing hospitalization should arrange in their parish for the Sacrament of Anointing or Reconciliation before entering the hospital for treatment or surgery. The diocese of Fresno provides Catholic priests on call for Community Hospitals in Fresno and Clovis, Kaiser Permanente, Veterans Medical Center,Fresno Heart & Surgical Hospital and Valley Children's Hospital,Madera. These priests may be contacted by patients or families needing a priest by asking at the nurses' station or contacting the hospital operator or chaplain's office at the respective hospital. Our wonderful Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick, trained, commissioned and coordinated by Deacon Bill Lucido, provide Communion to our home bound parishioners or those hospitalized or in hospice care or health care facilities.
