1 Sixth Sunday of Lent March 20, 2016 Readings: Lk 19: 28-40; Phil 2:8-9; Lk 22:14-23:56 The Deacon s Speakin Dear Friends, I am often asked about the length of Lent and when it officially ends and when can I stop fasting? As we begin Holy Week, I wanted to give you a brief explanation of how the church s determines what the Triduum is and how it figures in the calculation the special days of his week. Triduum "Triduum" comes from two Latin words (tres and dies) which mean "a space of three days." But since we have four days with special names - Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday - the "three" may be confusing to some. The confusion is cleared up when we understand how the days are determined. On all high festival days the church counts a day in the same way as Jewish people count days and festivals; that is, from sundown to sundown. Thus, the Triduum consists of three twenty-four hour periods that stretch over four calendar days. Therefore, the Easter Triduum begins at sundown on Holy Thursday with the Mass of the Lord's Supper and concludes with Easter evening prayer at sundown on Easter Sunday; its high point is the celebration of the Easter Vigil. According to the above calculation, Lent ends at sundown on Holy Thursday; thus Holy Thursday itself is the last day of Lent. This doesn t mean that our fasting concludes on Holy Thursday, however; the church has traditionally kept a solemn forty- hour fast from the beginning of the Triduum (Holy Thursday evening, thus the solemn fast is connected with the Lenten fast) until the fast is broken at Communion during the Easter Vigil. Peace and love Deacon John Mission Statement Gifted by God, called by Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, St. Paul Catholic Newman Center is a parish committed to serving the academic community and all those who choose to be part of our parish family.

In case you are wondering WHY palms, that s because palm trees and olive trees were the kind of trees that grew in Jerusalem, and it was the custom for people to wave those kinds of branches to honor someone. Today, if there are no palms available, willow branches, olive branches, or other kinds of greenery are blessed and used in the processions. After this joyful reminder of Jesus riding into Jerusalem, the story of Jesus passion (which means suffering) is read so this Sunday is also called Passion Sunday Fun-damental Facts for Catholic Kids Lenten Penance Service St. Anthony of Padua (5770 N.
