In the words of Pope Francis Fast from hurting words...and say kind words Fast from sadness...and be filled with gratitude Fast from anger and be filled with patience Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope Fast from worries...and have trust in the lord Fast from complaints...and contemplate simplicity Fast from pressures...and be prayerful Fast from bitterness...and fill your hearts with joy Fast from selfishness...and be compassionate with others Fast from grudges...and be reconciled Fast from words...and be silent so you can listen Lent prepares you to celebrate more fully the death and Resurrection of Jesus. For individuals and the community, it intensifies Christian Hope, Faith, and Love. The more earnestly and deeply you observe Lent, the more you benefit spiritually. Second Collection This Weekend This weekend our parish will take up the collection for the Catholic Communication Campaign. This collection communicates the Gospel through Catholic social media activities and enriches our faith through television, radio, social media, podcasts, and print media. Half of all proceeds remain in our diocese and support local needs so please be generous in this collection. Fresno Catholic Singles Our general meeting and potluck will be Thursday, March 1 at 6:30pm in the Cafeteria. Faith, Family & Friends "Growing as a Faith Family" Everyone is invited to join us We will meet this Tuesday, February 20 for a special Lenten session of Faith, Family & Friends, specially designed for Children and Families! College Corner Wednesday Night Dinner There will be a Communion Service at 6:00pm in the Chapel followed by dinner at 6:30pm. This week we will join the college and young adult Lenten retreat. Knights of Columbus Burrito Breakfast Today after the 7:30am, 9:00am, and 11:00am Masses the Knights of Columbus are hosting a burrito breakfast in which half of the proceeds will benefit the Food Recovery Network. The price is $5 each. They are serving bacon and sausage burritos, orange juice and coffee in the Cafeteria. Memorial Garden Dedication Our Memorial Garden Dedication will be on Sunday, March 4 immediately following the 11:00am Mass. We are still taking orders to complete the remainder of our garden. There are 44 more bricks that are available for purchase. The cost is $100 per brick. Order forms are available at the front desk. At 6:30pm adults, families and children will gather in the Chapel by to take part in The Way of the Cross presented by Dr. Andrea Pobanz. She will lead us to reflect on Jesus way of the cross and how this prayer and journey is part of our lives, not only during Lent, but throughout the year. Everyone is invited to join us at FF&F. 3 Lenten Symbol The first Sunday of Lent: Jesus' temptation in the desert. Mark tells us: "The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert." Our symbol is a dove - The Spirit - resting on rocks. Just as Jesus was tested through what he suffered, his Spirit walks with us when we are tested. We identify with his humanness. We strive to adhere to the words and deeds of Jesus. Thank you The Mardi Gras committee would like to thank all of you for your continued support of our Mardi Gras Fundraiser. We had another successful dinner-dance last Saturday night. We appreciate all of the donations and sponsorships that were given by parish members. It was wonderful to see the college students that were able to attend thanks to your generosity. We also appreciate all of the volunteers that helped to make this a success. Over the weekend a phrase that we kept hearing was Many hands make light work. We indeed had many hands to help put this together. Our Newman Center Faith Family is amazing, and we are very thankful for your generosity. Thank you, The 2018 Mardi Gras Committee Knights Sponsor a Seminarian The Knights of Columbus John Cardinal Newman Council #9445 is sponsoring Mr. Arturo Cisneros, a Seminarian for our Diocese, with financial support for his personal needs and with prayer. Funding came from proceeds from Football Parking. Please keep him and all of our Seminarians in your prayers. Women's Guild Lenten Project As the season of Lent approaches, the Women's Guild will be performing a service project to benefit Holy Cross Women's Center. As we know, lots of organizations and churches will help during the Christmas season, and it is greatly appreciated. This service project is to help the Center with personal hygiene supplies that are needed on a daily basis. This will help the Center with the expenditure when they need to purchase these items. We will be collecting the small shampoo, conditioner and lotion bottles that you might bring home from stays in hotels. Other items also in need would be small toothpaste, tooth brushes, deodorant and clean white socks. If you would care to assist in our efforts to gather these supplies our project will start on Ash Wednesday and end on Easter Sunday. If you have questions or have supplies you would care to donate, please contact Phyllis Scialabba, Sacrament of Reconciliation There will be NO Sacrament of Reconciliation on the following dates: February 20 March 6 March 27 April 3 We will be having our Lenten Reconciliation Service on March 7. Please check with other parishes for their Reconciliation services and times. Grief Support The Grief Support Group is a resource for learning how to embrace and work through the loss of a loved one. We will be meeting in the Community Room on Mondays at 7:00pm starting February 26 though March 19. Day of Prayer The Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue is urging members of all different religious traditions to support Pope Francis call for a day of prayer and fasting for peace on February 23rd. More information can be found on our website. Bereavement Ministry Training Anyone interested in learning how to effectively minister to survivors of violent crime, particularly those who have experienced the death of a loved one to homicide, are invited to this free bereavement training. This training will take place Tuesday, April 10 through Thursday, April 12 at Villa Maria Del Mar Retreat Center in Santa Cruz. Please see our website for registration. Retreat for Catholic Senior Adults Fulfilling Our Live s Mission: Learning to Love This retreat will be at the St. Anthony Retreat Center in Three Rivers. 4 An Invitation form Fr. Greg Beaumont I am inviting you to Mass and a special benefit dinner with my brother, Fr. David, and also to retreat events in our diocese. Fr. David Beaumont O. F. M. Cap. Began 28 years ago as a missionary priest to a simple small parish in the Sonora mountains of Mexico. His Religious Superior (provincial) of the vast, remote and dangerous territory, and has established a program of formation for religious brothers and priests that has already born fruit in the ordination of eight new priests. He is also the Vicar for Indigenous for the Diocese of Sonora. During Lent he will be leading a parish mission at St. Brigid s Church in Hanford at St. Malachy church in Tehachapi. Some of the events include: Wednesday, February 28 at 5:30pm Mass in Kingsburg at Holy Family Church followed by a benefit dinner. 5:30pm Mass, 6:30 pm Appetizers, 7:00pm Gala Dinner. Lent Lenten Practices Catholics are encouraged in Lent to cultivate three religious practices: fasting and abstinence; prayer; almsgiving. The purpose of our Lenten practices is to discipline ourselves to be attuned to the activity of God in our lives. What does it mean to fast? Fasting is making do with less food. The result of not eating so much and getting hungry is that we have a heightened sense of awareness. When we eat too much, we have a sluggish feeling. When we fast, we are more alert and open to the activities of God in our lives. Fasting cleanses our bodies and prepares us to pray more deeply. When do we fast? Always check your local diocesan regulations regarding Lenten observances. In general, Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are required to fast. This means that on these days we eat only one full meal, with no food between meals. It is understood that if one eats three meals a day, the two other meals should not total one full meal. Of course, everyone is free to fast at any other time as an aid for prayer and reflection. What does it mean to Abstain? To abstain is to refrain from eating meat, as an act of penance and sacrifice. Since innumerable people in the world cannot afford to eat meat, our abstaining from eating meat can put us in solidarity with the hungry and poor of the world. When do we abstain? Always check your local diocesan regulations regarding Lenten observances. In general, Catholics in the United States abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. This does not include abstaining from eggs and dairy products. All Catholics who have completed their fourteenth year of age are bound by the law of abstinence. Giving up more than Chocolate Lent has begun. The 40 days of preparation for the Easter Season when we are called to deepen our spiritual lives through the practices of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. The belief that our consistent participation in these practices like exercise we do for our physical health improves our spiritual well-being by stripping away all that is unnecessary and becoming more mindful of how God is working in our lives. Challenge yourself this year, and go beyond the usual practice of giving up something. Now is a great time to take stock of your spiritual life and grow in it. Not sure where to start? Check out these ideas: 1. Make a commitment to read the Sunday scriptures before you go to Mass. In the same way that reading up on the football players, opposing teams and coaching strategies will help you experience a game more fully, familiarizing yourself with the readings ahead of time will help you experience the them in a deeper way on Sunday. 2. Think about what you spend you money on. Do you buy too many clothes? Spend too much on dinner out? Pick one type of expenditure that you will fast from during lent, and then give the money you would usually spend to a local charity 3. Take something on 40 days of letter writing, 40 acts of kindness, 40 phone calls to the important people in our life. 4. Go to a weekday Mass one day during the week. Many parishes offer them early in the morning, at noon, or after work. Daily Masses are often more intimate and shorter than Sunday Mass. 5. Read the entire Gospel of Mark in one sitting. As the shortest Gospel, it is the most concise story of Jesus life, and the cross, a central Lenten symbol, plays an even more prominent role than in the other Gospels. 6. Unplug from your phone or turn off your car radio on your commute. The silence may be jarring at first, but you may find that you are able to concentrate better and will be more observant of your surroundings.
