Do unto others as they do unto you is simple justice and has been considered almost sacred in law at least since the Code of Hammurabi (18 th century before Christ) which specified an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. Reciprocity is a natural, commonsense way to order one s life, and is far more enlightened than the aggressive, selfish approach that many people favor today. Do unto others as they do unto you has morphed into Do unto others before they do unto you. There s also the simple approach Do unto others. We live in a world where many powerful and wealthy people use power and wealth to accumulate even more power and wealth with little regard to the effects on other people. As I heard on a TV show spoken by a wealthy landowner All I want is what s mine and what adjoins it. In many circles, such aggressive behavior is not only condoned, but it s celebrated. In some cases, truly evil people deliberately inflict injury on others for no apparent reason. We can understand, though not approve of, the person who would steal something of value. It s more difficult to understand a person who would set fire to a church because of racial hatred or shoot a passerby for a quick thrill. In such a dog-eat-dog world, reciprocity seems almost enlightened. It doesn t seek to inflict injury except in cases where injury is deserved. It seems fair! The bad person suffers, and the good person prospers. It s the way it should be. The good guy wins! And yet Jesus tells us that reciprocity is not kingdom behavior. Just as God goes beyond justice to mercy, we are to do the same. It s a hard lesson, one that goes against the grain. It s unnatural. We can move beyond justice to mercy, but only through the grace of God. This commandment is utterly impossible to obey (or even understand) unless we have been transplanted into a new identity and a new world order. (Richard Rohr) Peace and love, Deacon John

In order to do this we need a team of individuals who can be in charge of collecting donations and putting them in the truck. In order to finish our Lifetouch Directory, we need to have all of our roster information up to date. Without verification of the information, we cannot print this directory. A lot of the information that we have in our database is outdated including phone numbers, and we have been unsuccessful in our attempts to complete the update. We are asking that all parishioners verify the information by filling out the form at Mass, even if you think we have the most up-to-date information. 3 Faith, Family & Friends This Tuesday, February 26 is our Community Meal Night. We will gather in Cardinal Newman Hall from 5:30pm to 6:00pm. At 6:00pm we will begin our opening program and at 6:15pm the children will be released to attend their age specific classes. Adults will return to Cardinal Newman Hall to attend one of the following class sessions from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. The All Adult Session will continue our study of "The Many Themes within the Gospel of Luke presented by Jim Grant. Faith, Family & Friends is our parish s major religious education and faith formation program for EVERYONE - adults and families with children. It aims to bring together all individuals of our parish, families, and friends to learn about and grow in faith on one evening a week. You will be amazed at how this community evening can transform your life and the life of your family. You and your family will have the opportunity to grow and develop spiritually, intellectually and to form friendship bonds with members and families of our parish.
